Kreeft: The Twelve Most Important Things to Know about Angels

  1. They really exist. Not just in our minds, or our myths, or our symbols, or our culture. They are as real as your dog, or your sister, or electricity.
  2. They’re present, right here, right now, right next to you, reading these words with you.
  3. They’re not cute, cuddly, comfortable, chummy, or “cool”. They are fearsome and formidable. They are huge. They are warriors.
  4. They are the real “extra-terrestrials”, the real “Super-men”, the ultimate aliens. Their powers are far beyond those of all fictional creatures.
  5. They are more brilliant minds than Einstein.
  6. They can literally move the heavens and the earth if God permits them.

  1. I am a fan of Kreeft and love listening to his thoughts on this or that. It is like honey to a bee. Yet that does not mean we have to agree with everything nor should it. For example I do not disagree for the most part with this comment on the Angels, however some of it is contested and I thought I should throw out some of my own observations that run against Peters thinking here.

Firstly, 3 suggests they are somewhat fearful and not at all cute, cuddly, chummy, cool etc and are fearsome and awesome warriors.
That is alas only some of the story. I do not disagree with what it says but what it fails to say. That in fact the angels may have the ability to be fearsome but being an angel does not make them so. Rather they are gentle, kind and most importantly of all, Loving. They like their divine Lord and Master show respect and their greater understanding makes them more forgiving and peace loving. They do not battle against us and we must not fear their wrath or anger since they understand our frailty and beg of Our Lord that we may turn from deceit back into their friendship. The Angels are thus supremely cool and whilst they may laugh at our attempts to be intelligent, are understanding and friendly, chums and cute they love us because it is always love that holds them in glory.
In 4 they are the ultimate supermen. In glory the angels have great power but we must remember that it is Our Frailty and Our ability to Suffer that in this life draws down the greater grace from God. Hence by uniting our weakness to Christ on Calvary we are able to obtain his mercy an event that exceeds the glory of the Just. As St Paul noted the salvation of Christ far outweighs any benefit of not having a fall. Therefore it is our littleness that has the potential to make humanity greater than a superman.
At 6 Angels can move heaven and earth if God allows. But that is always the case and I may say SNAP because the same is true of humans . ..if God allows it.
At 7 we are reminded of the devil etc. Quite rightly too but in usual thinking Satan and his fallen angels are no longer referred to as Angels but are now demons, devils etc. In rejecting God by their greater intelligence and will they have allowed Pride to overtake their reality. Humanity on the other hand by the virtue of Gods mercy may always turn back to God and escape the fate of Satan and his followers.

Whilst I have to agree with much of the twelve statements it seems that the essential truth of all angelic authority is forgotten because power and its use are irrelevant beside the greater truth of Love. The angels are about Love. In fact everything is ultimately reduced to this final reality. Everything. The angels love us and are there to help us, not judge us, put us aside or imagine they are nearer to God. They are about Love and it is only in Love that we can ever think or attempt to have any understanding of them. They exist in Love and they are part of that Divine Love that would bring all people to glory.
Whether we argue for the Madonna, greater glory than any angel or we think of the least flower in Paradise it is always the same. It is about Love and that concept should inspire us with hope and gratitude.

Lastly Peters rant about Gods justice as not being equality is wrong! Sorry Peter but you are very mistaken here. Gods Justice is Perfect Equality. His Justice is not human or angelic or what we may think is right or wrong but it is divine and supremely just. God is not capable of inequality or any such logical conclusions.
Intelligence does not make for superiority! Our political world is full of stupid people that hold power and are superior over much in society. It is not always Justice that allows the office to be higher either. For example in a democracy one can propose that it maybe the case but under a tyranny the office maybe corrupted along with its holder. In effect we cannot argue that Justice makes one superior to another by their office alone because Justice itself may be absent in them. For example Jesus refutes and warns the Pharisees that they will answer to God despite both their authority and office even though they may have claimed greater knowledge than some Carpenter from Galilee.
If the angels are superior to humanity it is not because of their intelligence but because of grace. In any case as noted above two humans are superior to any angel, the Madonna and her son our lord. However generally humans are less than the angels because our nature is fallen, corrupted and limited by time and space. It is not a reference to the angels being more loved by God as Love is not a finite cake wherein love shall be rationed by the cleanest face. Rather as humans on earth we are subject to many influences including sin.
On the other hand Our Salvation in Heaven sees humanity raised to a state of Glory equal to that of the angels and to Gods eternal love unbounded.
