Take one of the most powerful institutions in history and change it so radically, in all the wrong ways, that in the span of 50 years, it will be a shell of its former self…

In the tumultuous 1960s, the world was on fire as secularism and moral relativism were in vogue. Rather than fighting those concepts, the church went in the opposite direction. Vatican II allowed Catholics to be “Catholic” in any way they wanted, playing into the hands of the Woodstock culture. Unwittingly, that carte-blanche decree served as a launching point for the now-dominant “do whatever makes you feel good” mentality.

In an instant, what made Roman Catholicism the world’s dominant force vanished. To many, the “rock” upon which St. Peter built the church no longer seemed solid, but more “flexible.”

Editor’s note: Let no man deceive you by any means: for unless there come a revolt first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition Who opposeth and is lifted up above all that is called God or that is worshipped, so that he sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself as if he were God.
Remember you not that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now you know what withholdeth, that he may be revealed in his time.
For the mystery of iniquity already worketh: only that he who now holdeth do hold, until he be taken out of the way.
And then that wicked one shall be revealed: whom the Lord Jesus shall kill with the spirit of his mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: him Whose coming is according to the working of Satan, in all power and signs and lying wonders: And in all seduction of iniquity to them that perish: because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. (2:10)
Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying: (2:11) That all may be judged who have not believed the truth but have consented to iniquity.   (2 Thessalonians 2:3-12)

  1. Can you cite which document or official Vatican II document said any such thing?

“Vatican II allowed Catholics to be “Catholic” in any way they wanted…”

This wasn’t just a post, it was a “Post hoc ergo propter hoc”.

The problem was exactly the opposite. “In an instant, what made Roman Catholicism the world’s dominant force vanished”. No, it remained a dominant force, but now for something else. Its very dominance kept people within when it switched to the wide road to hell. What was moral authority subtly was seduced and became political power, initially upholding moral authority, but then the heretics took over and spoke their heresy from the seats of dominance. It wanted more dominance – political power over moral authority – to make it easier for others to join. That ultimately failed.

I think it would have been likely that the apostasy would have occurred anyway, but like the reformation, there would be a breakaway – an American (non-roman) Catholic church. It would have been a deformation instead of having the heretics stay within. The laity’s understanding wasn’t very deep if they could be swayed so easily. That is the danger of faith by proxy – if the priest becomes heretical, you become a heretic.

The church was probably as small as you see it today, but because of its “dominance” it had a very thick shell of superficially catholic people who could repeat the catechism but with no deeper understanding than a parrot or mina bird. Cheep, cheep, faith. Then the Cardinals started singing a different tune.

Membership in the church as such does not get one to heaven, only faith in Jesus and grace (ordinarily via the sacraments) can do so. The Church can only have either moral authority or political/secular authority at any one time. When the Church became politically powerful it could not preach the gospel effectively. Whenever it was terribly persecuted, there was no shortage of saints, miracles, preachers, adherence to authentic teaching, and true converts. It thrived.

If you pray for worldly success (dominance) for the Church or consider it something to be desired, you are desiring a church in apostasy. The world hated and hates Christ. When the world starts loving the church it is in deep trouble even if it isn’t immediately apparent.

    • Dear TZ,

It’s not what the documents actually say … it’s how they are interpreted and acted upon by the church hierarchy.

While the authentic Holy Spirit was no doubt present at Vatican II, there’s little doubt that the aftermath was, and for the most part continues to be, dominated by an obtuse spirit that is not of God … but of the world.
