Did Constantine’s victory under the sign of the Cross lead to persecution of the Jews?

As Claire Sotinel, Professor of Roman History at the University Paris-Est Cherethites, will explain during her presentation at the international conference “Constantine the Great: The Roots of Europe,” to be held in the Vatican from 18 to 21 April: all Constantine did was open a Christian church in Jerusalem, which at the time was not Jewish, but pagan.

But the Chief Rabbi of Rome, Riccardo Di Segni, disagrees. “The conversion of Constantine changed everything,” the spiritual leader of the oldest Jewish community in Europe told Vatican Insider. “That event has had a decisive impact on history, and is closely related to the persecution of the Jews.” The conversion of Constantine, he added, “has divided history into ‘before’ and ‘after,’ causing such turmoil that Emperor Julian’s unsuccessful attempt to remedy it earned him the title of ‘the Apostate.’ It goes against all historical evidence to deny it.”

Editor’s note: The seminal event for the Jews was the 70 AD destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, which was followed up by many years of wars and rebellions, leaving what remained of the Holy Land under the occupation of pagans, rather than Jews.

But it was the persecution of Christians by the Jews which ultimately contributed most to the separation of the two faiths, since that (along with the grace of God) is what caused St. Peter and St. Paul to journey to Rome, in the first place.

All this happened more than two centuries before Constantine.

The Rabbi does have a point, though. Once Christianity became the “official” faith of the Roman Empire … Judaism … along with many of the Roman’s favorite pagan cults … would soon and forever more … be cast as obsolete and essentially apostate religions.

Padre Giovanni is the responsible Jesuit priest at the Jesuit Astali Refugee Centre in Rome. They have a battery of lawyers who assist refugees, including those who have been rejected for political asylum.

At times it seems the Jesuit legal system is there for only leftist social injustice issues.

See the leftist media propaganda against the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) and Vatican Council II in particular and Catholic teachings in general.

Could not some of those lawyers advocate honesty in newspaper reporting about Catholics?

There are so many claims of anti Semitism. What about anti Catholicism by institutions and media of the Jewish Left, like the ADL.

The ADL and the mainstream media in Italy repeat that the SSPX teaches that Jews need to convert for salvation and this is contrary to the ‘reforms’ of Vatican Council II. Then they repeat that the Catholic Church teaches that Jews are still the Chosen People of God.

They will never mention that Vatican Council II indicates that Jews need to convert into the Catholic Church to avoid Hell (for salvation) and Catholics are the ‘new people of God’.(AG 7,NA 4).

Couldn’t the Jesuit lawyers point this out to the media?

This is disinformation about Catholic teachings and it is ‘hate’ specifically against the SSPX.

The SSPX is affirming Traditional Catholic teaching and Vatican Council II when it says Jews need to convert for salvation.

Then the secular liberal media says that now the Church teaches that there is salvation outside the Church since a non Catholic can be saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire (LG 16).

Commonsense tells us that we do not know any case of a non Catholic saved in invincible ignorance or the baptism of desire. So how can it be an explicit exception to AG 7 which says all need Catholic Faith and the baptism of water for salvation?

How can it be an exception to the defined dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus (Cantate Domino)?

These are the falsehoods being repeated by the print media and television in Italy and it is not being checked legally.

The Vatican cannot be expected to make the clarification since they are under political pressure from Rabbi Rosen, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and the ADL and their supporters. So they have to keep silent.

Could a legal aide of the Astali Centre or another Catholic organization check the misinformation in the media point by point?

If the misinformation about the Catholic Faith is the political opinion of the Jewish Left it should be said so and it should not be claimed that this is the teaching of Vatican Council II.

    • Brief Twitter thread on the history of Catholic-Jewish relations that I wrote partly in response to Benzion Netanyahu’s polemical anti-Catholic and anti-Christian book, <>:

A few reports on the Jewish Anti Defamation League (ADL) website are critical of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) for saying Jews need to convert but these reports do not criticize Vatican Council II which also has the same message. (AG 7, NA 4).

The SSPX rejects the ADL interpretation of Vatican Council II, which really is a political position, with no supporting texts from the Council. The ADL cannot provide any references. The ADL keeps repeating that the SSPX opposes ecumenism and the ‘reforms’ of Vatican Council II. The ADL never mentions that Vatican Council II says Jews need to convert for salvation and Catholics are the new people of God (AG 7, NA 4). This is the actual SSPX message and the teaching of the Catholic Church magisterium including that of Pope John Paul II.

Vatican Council II has the same message as ‘the Lefebvrists’ on ecumenism and inter religious dialogue.

The SSPX opposes the ADL interpretation of Vatican Council II which the Jewish Left is imposing on the Vatican with political and military threats.

Imagine the world wide political storm the SSPX could cause if they announced that they accept Vatican Council II interpreted according to Catholic Tradition and the salvation dogma.

Since, Vatican Council II affirms the literal interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

Fr. Leonard Feeney was not excommunicated for heresy and even if he was, Vatican Council II is in agreement with the literal interpretation of the dogma. While Lumen Gentium 16 (invincible ignorance, a good conscience) are not explicit, known exceptions. They do not contradict AG 7.

Assuming the Holy Office 1949 excommunicated Fr. Leonard Feeney for saying that the baptism of desire was not an exception to the dogma, then it was an objective error on their part. Also the ordinary magisterium of Pope Pius XII cannot over rule a defined dogma or Vatican Council II in accord with that dogma which has a bearing on ecumenism and relations with non Catholics. (Cantate Domino, Council of Florence). The Letter of the Holy Office instead referred to ‘the dogma’, the ‘infallible’ teaching. The dogma indicates all Jews in Boston need to convert to avoid the fires of Hell.(Cantate Domino).

Vatican Council II like Cantate Domino, also says all need Catholic Faith and the baptism of water for salvation (to avoid Hell) (AG 7). So for the ADL this interpretation of Vatican Council II would be anti-Semitic.

The SSPX simply says that they reject Vatican Council II (ADL version) and Jews need to convert for salvation. They maintain Catholics are the Chosen People of God, Christ is King of the Universe and His Social Reign must extend to all socialist and secular institutions now controlled by the Jewish Left and others.

The Vatican is now threatening the SSPX with excommunication if they do not accept the ADL version of Vatican Council II and the pro abortion, homosexuality,ADL -approved values for the Catholic Church.

The SSPX needs to issue a public statement which says, more or less:-

‘In response to the Communiqué of the Vatican (March 16, 2012) and earlier statements of Pope Benedict XVI on Vatican Council II not being a break from Tradition, we wish to explore the possibility of accepting Vatican Council II in accord with the salvation dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. We will hold conferences at the SSPX District Superior level in which members of the Pontifical Institutions will be invited to clarify the doctrinal interpretation of Vatican Council II accepted by the SSPX and to publically know the position of the Vatican, especially with regard to ecumenism, inter religious dialogue, religious liberty and salvation.

‘We hope to clarify if Vatican Council II rejects the theology of religions of the Vatican International Theological Commission.

‘Catholic Novus Ordo priests in Rome have reportedly said that we do not know any non Catholic saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire. So there may be nothing in Vatican Council II which opposes the literal interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus and the SSPX position that all Jews and other non Catholics need to convert for salvation.

‘The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is also welcome to clarify immediately or when possible the following points:-

    1. We do not know any one saved in invincible ignorance, a good conscience, seeds of the Word, imperfect communion, elements of sanctification etc among non Catholics ?

    2. So Lumen Gentium 16 (invincible ignorance, good conscience) is not referring to an explicit exception to Ad Gentes 7 and the defined dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus ?

    3. So Ad Gentes 7 and the dogma outside the Church no salvation indicate that all need Catholic Faith and the baptism of water for salvation and there are no known exceptions on earth ?

    4. So Vatican Council II is saying that Jews,Muslims ( and other non Christians) and Protestants and Orthodox Christians (and other non Catholics) need Catholic Faith for salvation (to avoid Hell) ?

    5. Since Vatican Council II indicates that all non Catholics are oriented to Hell there cannot be a theology of religions according to Vatican Council II ?’

The SSPX could accept Vatican Council II as a continuation of Tradition with respect to the salvation dogma and the other issues of Vatican Council II could be debated later.

The Society of St. Pius X: Mired in Anti-Semitism

Therefore those men cannot be saved, who though aware that God, through Jesus Christ founded the Church as something necessary, still do not wish to enter into it, or to persevere in it.”-Ad Gentes 7,Vatican Council II

According to the Anti Defamation League website, the ADL welcomes a document released earlier this year which denounces coercive Christian missionary activity and religious persecution.

The ADL it should be noted was active in calling for an end to dialogue with the Vatican unless Church teaching was changed on the Good Friday prayer for the Convrsion of the Jews. The pro ADL newspapers reported there was a threat of war between Israel and the Vatican. This was of course not considered coercive.

The website also has a report presently full of hate against the Society of St. Pius X.

The ADL has been telling the Catholic Church that its teachings are insufficient and inadequate and need to be changed. This is routine interference in the teachings of the Catholic Church.

The Church is told to accept the reforms of Vatican Council II without ADL mentioning any text from Vatican Council II which refer to these reforms.

The uncomfortable passages related to ADL and the Jews in Vatican Council II are not mentioned. According to Ad Gentes 7 those who know about Jesus and the Church and yet do not enter are oriented to Hell. The ADL-people ‘know’. Abraham Foxman also lived with a Catholic family as a youth Vatican Council II indicates he is oriented to Hell.

The document which ADL welcomes was also probably issued under the political and military threat of the enemies of the Church.

As individual lay Catholics we know we are obliged to follow the teachings of the Catholic Church which are consistent with Tradition, the Bible and the Magisterium.Catholics know what the Church teaches. It never changes. Objective reality at the supernatural level never changes. There still is Hell and Heaven and the conditions for going there are told to us by the Catholic Church only.

Vatican Council II indicates that Catholic Faith and the baptism of water are the ordinary means of salvation (AG 7,LG 14) which means millions of non Catholics are oriented to Hell. This would include Foxman and many others. This is the official teaching of the Church and not a private view like those of ADL and others.
    -Lionel Andrades

The Anti Defamation League has urged the Vatican to ensure that the Society of St.Pius X (SSPX) accepts the Catholic Church’s official teachings before they are fully accepted in the Roman Catholic Church.

According to the ADL website ADL Urges Vatican To Ensure Anti-Jewish Sect Accepts Teachings Of Vatican II Before They Are Welcomed Back September 16, 2011, the Vatican was asked to make sure that the SSPX accepts the ‘landmark reforms of the Second Vatican Council II.

This is an opportunity for the SSPX to cite Vatican Council II text, which the ADL never does, and show how they accept the official teaching of the Catholic Church with respect to Vatican Council and other Magisterium teaching.

The Superior General of the SSPX Bishop Bernard Fellay in an interview after his meeting with Cardinal William Levada said that Pope Benedict XVI sees Vatican Council II as a continuation and not a break from Tradition and the teachings of the Church over centuries.

Since the issue is the Jews , and of course other religions, the SSPX could quote Vatican Council II and pre and post Vatican Council II Magisterial texts, affirming the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. This would be the official teaching of the Roman Catholic Church as demanded by the ADL.

    Poor, poor Vatican Council II!

CDF CLARIFIES COMMENT ON CONDOMS BUT NOT JEWS : POPE CONTRADICTS BIBLE http://eucharistandmission.blogspot.com/2010/12/cdf-clarifies-comment-on-condoms-but.html#links

On its website ADL, the anti Catholic, hate organisation calls on Catholic leaders to accept its Zionist understanding of the Catholic Faith. ADL must know that we cannot accept their political suggestions since Vatican Council II shows us that it is imperative that all non Catholics, Jews included, convert into the Catholic Church to avoid Hell.

    1. All non Catholics with no exception are on the path to Hell (Vatican Council II, Ad Gentes 7).

Therefore, all must be converted to Him, made known by the Church’s preaching, and all must be incorporated into Him by baptism and into the Church which is His body. For Christ Himself “by stressing in express language the necessity of faith and baptism (cf. Mark 16:16; John 3:5), at the same time confirmed the necessity of the Church, into which men enter by baptism, as by a door.-AG 7
    2. Everyone with no exception needs to enter the Catholic Church, to avoid Hell and go to Heaven. (Vatican Council II, pre and post Vatican Council II Magisterium documents up to Pope John Paul II).

Hindus, Jews, Muslims, Protestants, Orthodox Christians, Pentecostals and others are on the way to Hell unless before they die they enter the Catholic Church, the only Church Jesus founded (Ad Gentes7, CCC 845, 846,Dominus Iesus 20 etc).

The Bible says Jews and non Jews need to enter the Catholic Church to avoid Hell.So does the ex cathedra dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

    1. “There is but one universal Church of the faithful, outside which no one at all is saved.” (Pope Innocent III, Fourth Lateran Council, 1215). Ex cathedra.

    2. “We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.” (Pope Boniface VIII, the Bull Unam Sanctam, 1302.).Ex cathedra.

    3. “The most Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that none of those existing outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics, can have a share in life eternal; but that they will go into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless before death they are joined with Her; and that so important is the unity of this ecclesiastical body that only those remaining within this unity can profit by the sacraments of the Church unto salvation, and they alone can receive an eternal recompense for their fasts, their almsgivings, their other works of Christian piety and the duties of a Christian soldier. No one, let his almsgiving be as great as it may, no one, even if he pour out his blood for the Name of Christ, can be saved, unless he remain within the bosom and the unity of the Catholic Church.” (Pope Eugene IV, the Bull Cantate Domino, 1441.) Ex cathedra – from the website Catholicism.org and “No Salvation outside the Church”: Link List, the Three Dogmatic Statements Regarding EENS

Venerable Pope Pius XII, whom Pope Benedict XVI wants to beatify in spite of opposition from the ADL and Israel, called the above ex cathedra dogma, an ‘infallible’ teaching.

Jews are no more the Chosen People of God since they rejected the Jewish Messiah promised by the Jewish Prophets. They no longer have the Temple, the sacrifice of the Temple nor the Awaited Messiah. Catholics are the Chosen People of God, they are the People of the New Covenant, they are the continuation of the Jewish Religion with the Sacrifice of the Mass. The Eucharist is the Ark of the Covenant which the Jews have lost.

According to Vatican Council II (Lumen Gentium 14, Ad Gentes 7) all those persons who know about Jesus and the Catholic Church and yet do not enter the Church are oriented to Hell. This would include all the participants in dialogue who know about Jesus and the Church. It includes Abraham Foxman, the National Director of ADL.

Ad Gentes 7 says all Jews need to enter the Catholic Church.

Lumen Gentium 14 says Catholic Faith and Baptism are needed for all, Jews included.

The Decree on Ecumenism (UR) 3, Vatican Council II: Catholic Church is the true faith. Not Judaism.

No where in Vatican Council II is it said that Jews do not have to convert into the Catholic Church to avoid Hell.

Lumen Gentium 16 does not say that Jews in general do not have to convert into the Catholic Church. It does not say all Jews do not need to convert to avoid Hell.

Also no where in Nostra Aetate is it said that Jews do not have to convert.

So Lumen Gentium 16 and the Catechism of the Catholic Church 847,848 do not contradict the rigorist interpretation of the dogma outside the church there is no salvation. Only God knows who is saved with the baptism of desire. It is explicit only for God and implicit for us. Vatican Council II affirms extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

The same message of Vatican Council II is also there in other Magisterial texts.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church 845: God the Father wants all people to worship Him and to enter the Catholic Church. God the Father wants all people to be united into the Catholic Church.

Notification, N.7, Fr. Jacques Dupuis S.J, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Vatican : All people need to be oriented into the Catholic Church and to be a part of her.

    According to the ADL website:

Nostra Aetate, a declaration adopted in 1965 by the Second Vatican Council, repudiates anti-Semitism and the charge of “Christ-killer” against the Jewish people and lays the foundation for subsequent theological teachings about Judaism’s ongoing vitality, self-understanding and God’s irrevocable Covenant with the Jewish people made at Mt. Sinai….-Catholics Urged : Reject Anti-Jewish Teaching (Interfaith.ADL website)
The Bible and Jesus repudiates all hate and teaches us to love Jews and others. Jesus founded only one Church and made an everlasting Covenant. Catholics are the Chosen people of God.They are the People of the New Covenant and the fulfilment of the covenants God made with Abraham, Moses and the other prophets.

The ADL which is considered a major anti Semitic organisation, by Jewish rabbis in the USA and Israel, states:
The 1974 Vatican document “Guidelines and Suggestions for Implementing the Conciliar Declaration Nostra Aetate, No. 4” calls on Catholics to appreciate Judaism in its own terms. The Guidelines state that: “Christians must therefore strive to acquire a better knowledge of the basic components of the religious tradition of Judaism; they must strive to learn by what essential traits Jews define themselves in the light of their own religious experience.”
Judaism does not have one central authority and ADL does not represent conservative Jews, those opposed to Zionism. There is no one religious tradition of Judaism. The Jewish Left do not represent all Jews and they are opposed in public by an organisation representing over a thousand Rabbis.Rabbis also claim that the ADL is a source of anti-Semitism directed against innocent rank and file Jews. http://www.jewsagainstzionism.com /

The pro agnosticism, abortion and sodomy ADL states.

The 1985 “Notes on the Correct Way to Present Jews and Judaism in Preaching and Catechesis in the Roman Catholic Church” directly contradicts Archbishop Bustros’ contentions…
The 1985 Notes are not obligatory to be followed by all Catholics and it represents the opinion of one organisation supported by the political and military power of Israel and its allies. It uses the threat of war and sanctions against the Vatican, for Catholics to approve their agenda which is similar to that of the Masons.

Cardinals and bishops do not support ADL’s political understanding of the Catholic Faith.

Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect for the Congregation for the Cause of the Saints, working for the beatification of Pope John Paul II has said inter religious dialogue should not exclude proclamation. (Amato: il dialogo non exclude l’nnuncio ‘ Stefano Andrini da Bologna Dec3.2009, Avvenire p.16 Catholica)

In an interview in the Italian daily Avvenire he emphasised the importance of Catholic Mission. He was interviewed at the Salesian University, Rome by Gianni Cardinale (Amato: non ce Chiesa senza missione, March 8, 2008, Saturday p. 21, Catholica, Avvenire). He quoted verbatim Ad Gentes 7 and Lumen Gentium 14.

Archbishop Cyril Salim Bustros, a Greek Melkite archbishop recently said that Jews are not the chosen people.

    The chosen people
As for the idea of the chosen people, it is clear, according to Christian theology and especially to St. Paul, that after Christ there is no longer one particular chosen people! With Christ and in Him all men and women of all countries are called to become children of God and unite in one body, the Body of Christ.

The chosen people was not a privilege, it was a mission: Israel was chosen by God in the Old Testament to live in holiness, to proclaim His name among the nations, and to prepare the coming of the Messiah. St Paul does not deny the role of the Jewish people in the history of salvation. He writes to the Romans: “I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people, those of my own race, the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption to sonship; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised. Amen.” (Rom. 9:1-5)

But in his letter to the Ephesians, he declares that Jesus has united all the peoples in one people and one body:

“Therefore, remember that at one time you, Gentiles by birth, called ‘the uncircumcison’ by those called ‘the circumcision’, which is done in the flesh by human hands, remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the community of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commands and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father.” (Eph 2:11-18)..-Archbishop Cyril Salim Bustros on the website Jihad Watch
According to Vatican Council II Catholics are the Chosen People of God and everyone with no exception needs to enter the Catholic Church for salvation; everyone needs Catholic Faith and the baptism of water to be saved (Ad Gentes 7,Vatican Council II).
