JPII papal biographer and Catholic writer/speaker George Weigel makes a good point

Weigel, who is known for his biographical work on John Paul II’s life, centered his discussion on the late Pope’s visit to the Holy Land in 2000.

During his visit to the Holy Land, Pope John Paul II “wanted to carry the entire Church to the places of salvation history,” Weigel explained, so that the Church could viscerally encounter “the stuff of God become man, God entering into history for the salvation of the world.”

He explained that in the historical biblical places of the Holy Land “real people … became friends of Jesus of Nazareth and they met him at Easter and after as the risen Lord.”

From their friendship with Christ, “they went out to change the world.”

Pointing to the first Pope, Peter, Weigel noted that the apostle was “radically transformed” by his encounter with Christ and went from “a probably illiterate, probably smelly guy from east of nowhere, as the world then understood so,” to the first Pope and recipient of “the world’s greatest tombstone.”

“What the Catholic Church bears,” Weigel said “is the Truth of the World,” and it is this encounter with the Truth through Christ that transformed the world.

In order to re-introduce the world to the “Bible’s view of the human story,” he said, “John Paul II carried us all back to Jerusalem, back to the Holy Land.”

“He carried us back to the Holy Land,” so that we would be inspired and tell our story of “friendship with the Lord Jesus Christ.”

This reintroduction to “a biblical optic on the world, I think helps us to meet the challenge of coldness” in the world, Weigel continued.

A biblical worldview “helps us meet the challenge of unreality,”  posed by “a culture of a new gnosticism where everything is plastic and malleable, anything goes.”

However, even in the midst of challenging times, those who know Christ have reason to hope.

“Christians are the people who know how the story is going to turn out. Portrayed in the 21st chapter of Revelation, the end of the story, the end of the human story, is the wedding feast of the Lamb,” Weigel said.

“That is why we too, can be not afraid, and we to on with business as Pope John Paul taught us.”

The wrong Obamacare worker gets the axe

Obamacare_3

An Obamacare phone operator who had a conversation with Fox News host Sean Hannity lost her job on Thursday.

On Monday, the “Hannity” host called up the Affordable Care Act phone number provided by the federal government. Eventually, he was connected with Erling Davis, a phone operator working for a private contract company .

Hannity quizzed Davis about technical issues facing the government healthcare website and engaged in some small talk during their 10-minute conversation.

However, on Thursday Davis revealed that she was fired by her employer over the conversation. For his part, Hannity told listeners of his radio show that he will compensate Davis for a year’s salary tax free and try to help her find a new job.

“They fired me from my job,” Davis told Hannity while being interviewed on his radio program.

A transcribed the exchange between Davis and Hannity reads as follows:

Editor’s note: They should put VP Joe Biden to work at the Obamacare call center. That would certainly provide some amusing conversation!

German Catholic Church far from poor: 27 dioceses hold an estimated $100 billion worth of assets.

Pope Francis’s decision to suspend Germany’s Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst has brought worldwide attention to the bishop’s lavish spending. But it’s also drawn attention to the special relationship that the Roman Catholic Church has with the German state. Some observers say the fact the church is partially subsidized by Germany’s taxpayers, giving it an estimate net wealth of $100 billion, is the underlying reason for Bishop Tebartz-van Elst’s opulent lifestyle.

Here’s a closer look at why Germany’s Catholic Church is one of the wealthiest branches in the world:

Editor’s note: The love of money is the root of all evil – not merely having it.  But Jesus warned us that the rich are going to have a tough time getting into heaven. I wonder how that applies to the Catholic Church, exactly? Will God permit the end times church to be looted by the Beast and the Antichrist? That said, today’s German Catholic Church is the envy of many religious institutions, the world over.

Funny that nobody ever thought to reform church finances during Vatican II. Multi-hundreds of billions in cash and other hard assets must not be “pastoral” enough for that obtuse spirit of the world!

Acts 3:1-9

(1) Now Peter and John went up into the temple at the ninth hour of prayer.
(2) And a certain man who was lame from his mother’s womb was carried: whom they laid every day at the gate of the temple, which is called Beautiful, that he might ask alms of them that went into the temple.
(3) He, when he had seen Peter and John, about to go into the temple, asked to receive an alms.
(4) But Peter with John, fastening his eyes upon him, said: Look upon us.
(5) But he looked earnestly upon them, hoping that he should receive something of them.
(6) But Peter said: Silver and gold I have none; but what I have, I give thee. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, arise and walk.
(7) And taking him by the right hand, he lifted him up: and forthwith his feet and soles received strength.
(8) And he leaping up, stood and walked and went in with them into the temple, walking and leaping and praising God.
(9) And all the people saw him walking and praising God.

Army tells soldiers that evangelical Christians and members of the Tea Party were a threat to the nation and that any soldier donating to those groups would be subjected to punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

A soldier who attended the Oct. 17th briefing told me the counter-intelligence agent in charge of the meeting spent nearly a half hour discussing how evangelical Christians and groups like the American Family Association were “tearing the country apart.”

Michael Berry, an attorney with the Liberty Institute, is advising the soldier and has launched an investigation into the incident.

“The American public should be outraged that the U.S. Army is teaching our troops that evangelical Christians and Tea Party members are enemies of America, and that they can be punished for supporting or participating in those groups,” said Berry, a former Marine Corps JAG officer.

Bishop Poprocki: Asking the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede on behalf of gay “marriage” legislation was a sacrilege he would not tolerate on church property.

About a week ago, the Rainbow Sash Movement announced its intentions to silently pray the rosary inside Immaculate Conception Cathedral on Tuesday afternoon, 45 minutes before evening Mass. Their intention? That the state legislature would pass Senate Bill 10, titled the “Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act,” legalizing same-sex “marriage” in Illinois.

“By standing up in the Cathedral you will indicate you are there to pray the rosary for marriage” redefinition, its website said. “If you come from a specific parish, you can title yourselves ‘Friends of (Name of the Parish or Parishes).’”

Bishop Thomas Paprocki, whose See is based in the capital city of Springfield, used his role as shepherd of his people to warn Christians not to profane God by asking Him to publicly degrade holy matrimony.

“It is blasphemy to show disrespect or irreverence to God or to something holy,” he said, citing several passages of the Gospel that “Jesus clearly taught that marriage as created by God is a sacred institution between a man and a woman.”

“Praying for same-sex marriage should be seen as blasphemous, and as such will not be permitted in the cathedral,” he warned. “People wearing a rainbow sash or who otherwise identify themselves as affiliated with the Rainbow Sash Movement will not be admitted into the cathedral, and anyone who gets up to pray for same-sex marriage in the cathedral will be asked to leave.”

“Of course, our cathedral and parish churches are always open to everyone who wishes to repent their sins and ask for God’s forgiveness,” the bishop added.

Report: Catholic Theological Society has betrayed the very purpose responsible Catholic theology exists to serve.

Judas betraying Jesus Christ

“As one of our members put it, the CTSA is a group of liberal theologians and ‘this permeates virtually everything … because the CTSA does not aspire to be a partisan group, both attitudes and practices will have to shift if the CTSA is to become the place where all perspectives within Catholic theology in North America are welcome,” the report continued.

Dr. Anthony Lilles, who teaches spiritual theology at St. John Vianney Seminary in Denver, Colo., commented to CNA Oct. 22 that he is “both saddened and encouraged by the report.”

Editor’s note: This is no great surprise. Just another scandal in the church! Now let’s take another very close look at what’s being taught in all the Catholic seminaries.

How does somebody (especially a Catholic bishop) get “temporarily” suspended?

biblecash

The pope has suspended the bishop of Limburg for the immediate future. The German cleric was temporarily relieved of his post in the wake of a scandal involving a 31-million-euro ($42 million) renovation project.

Text and video

Editor’s note: Was this bishop some sort of ideologue – or worse yet – a traditionalist? Or, did he simply put his trust in collegiality and cash – instead of Jesus Christ? Perhaps this is some sort of retribution against German Cardinal Ratzinger for his recent criticism of some of Pope Frances’ recent decisions?  Will Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst now be required to operate from a hotel room, cook his own meals, share his lodging with a Jewish rabbi and drive a 1984 Volkswagen Beetle, while feigning abject humility? Why didn’t Cardinal Mahoney get suspended for wasting $660 million of church funds on abuse settlements? Is this just politics? Is the Pope Catholic? Watch this space for further developments!

European Parliament Rejects Bill Declaring Abortion a Fundamental Human Right

The European Parliament today rejected a report that recommended that EU nations declare abortion to be a human right and to make abortion available within all public health systems of member countries. Adoption of the report would have placed more pressure on pro-life nations like Ireland, Poland and Malta to legalize abortion on demand.

Scandal of the week: Retired Catholic priest officiates at two New Jersey homosexual “weddings”

According to USA Today, gay marriage (in New Jersey) officially became legal at midnight and several couples made sure that they were among the first to get married.

Councilwoman Amy Quinn and partner Heather Jensen were married in Asbury Park with another couple, Steven Brunner and Daniel Baum, in a joint ceremony. “I think it’s wonderful,” the Rev. Thomas Pivinski, who officiated the two weddings, said. “I am just very grateful that the state has recognized the equality of all people.”

We can thank Pope Francis for highlighting some of the liberal, modernistic stuff hidden in the current Catechism of the Catholic Church.

What the Abortion President and the Modernist Pope
have in common

by Doug Lawrence

Pope Francis’ unabashed, unapologetic and unashamed public promotion of worldly, liberal and modernist religious concepts is working a lot like Barack Obama’s similarly unrestrained efforts at promoting abortion without limits.

It’s making people with authentically formed consciences think and respond – utilizing all the  truths of the faith, within the proper context of sacred and apostolic tradition – as opposed to the hermaunetic of chaos, corruption and disruption that has been the “norm” in the Catholic Church, over the last fifty years.

In the case of Barack Obama and abortion, we’re seeing more anti-abortion laws being passed, coupled  with long overdue enforcement, regulation and prosecution of abortion facilities and abortionists.

In the case of Pope Francis – which is not yet as far along – I predict that we will eventually see all the liberal and modernist errors and scandals in the church exposed – and we will then be called to participate in a genuine spiritual revolution that will demand (and get) a prompt return to the doctrinal sanity, traditional reliability and genuine Christ-centered holiness for which the Catholic Church (except for the last half century) has always been known.

An article at Catholic Vote by writer Tom Hoopes put me on to this idea.

I’m sure Mr. Hoopes means well and intends to fully support and defend Pope Francis in his continuing outbursts of catechetical curiosities, but for those of us who know and understand the catechism – including its many weaknesses, omissions and political calculations – Hoopes article accomplishes just the opposite.

Here’s an example

Love, not Legalism

“If the Christian is a restorationist, a legalist, if he wants everything clear and safe, then he will find nothing. Tradition and memory of the past must help us to have the courage to open up new areas to God. Those who today always look for disciplinarian solutions, those who long for an exaggerated doctrinal ‘security,’ those who stubbornly try to recover a past that no longer exists—they have a static and inward-directed view of things. In this way, faith becomes an ideology among other ideologies.”

Rejecting ideology, even religious ideology, is another central teaching of Francis. And it’s a critically important teaching for our time, which turns everything into ideology. It is also a teaching of the Catechism.

1972 The New Law is called a law of love because it makes us act out of the love infused by the Holy Spirit, rather than from fear; a law of grace, because it confers the strength of grace to act, by means of faith and the sacraments; a law of freedom, because it sets us free from the ritual and juridical observances of the Old Law, inclines us to act spontaneously by the prompting of charity and, finally, lets us pass from the condition of a servant who “does not know what his master is doing” to that of a friend of Christ – “For all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you” – or even to the status of son and heir.

******

This totally ignores the fact that it is impossible to create true disciples without a certain amount of discipline – just as it would be virtually impossible to live a good, holy, Christian life absent regular prayer and study – along with full, faithful and active participation in all of the applicable work, worship,  sacraments and devotions of the Catholic Church.

The liberals and the modernists attempt to quickly discredit and then discard all that is tried and true in the Catholic Church, in favor of untested novelties that appeal primarily to the inflated human egos of persons who typically possess a distorted sense of charity, equality, diversity and prudence.

They also seem to totally forget that sin is the reason for most of the world’s evil – and that traditional Catholic teachings, practices, disciplines and philosophy remain the best antidote to sin that the world has ever known.

If that’s ideological, legalist and/or restorationist, then so be it!

The Catholic bishops have already experimented with the modernistic approach to corruption in the priesthood and it has cost the church much of its moral authority, along with at least $2.6 billion dollars that could otherwise have been used to feed, clothe and house the poor. This constitutes a colossal breach of essential Christian charity as well as an almost total failure of prudential judgment by ordained persons operating at the very highest levels of the Catholic Church!

Remember … with the close of the 2nd Vatican Council
“CHANGE” had come to the Catholic Church …
and it came to the Catholic Church FIRST!

It was only after the Church of the Ages
was totally disrupted and taken out of the way
that global terrorism, big government, radical feminism, abortion,
homosexuality, the destruction of the family
and many other types of evils and immorality
were allowed to proceed, virtually unchecked!

Should Pope Francis and his supporters succeed in their efforts to further “modernize” the Catholic Church, there’s no telling what new evils might be in store for the church – and for the world.

Richmond, Virginia: The largest contingent of Catholic seminarians in decades

In all, 22 seminarians – including eight from Hampton Roads – are preparing to take the vows of ordination in the diocese, according to church officials. That’s the largest contingent in decades and a huge increase since 1997, when just three candidates were in training.

To the Rev. Michael Boehling, who oversees clerical vocations for the diocese, it is “a promising sign that bodes well for the future.” While a nationwide priest shortage that began in the 1960s shows no sign of ending, he said, “the Lord continues to call young men to serve the church” in Virginia.

Catholic Church “caves” to Canadian provincial government on homosexuality. Accepts censorship.

WHITEHORSE, Yukon, Oct. 18, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Catholic Diocese of Whitehorse has obeyed an order by the Yukon government to remove Church teaching on the sinfulness of homosexuality from its policy on pastoral care for same-sex attracted students in its publicly-funded Catholic schools.  Critics have pointed out that even in the title of the new policy, the ‘truth’ has been removed.

The original policy contested by the government was called ‘Living with Hope, Ministering by Love, Teaching in Truth.’  The new policy title reads: ‘One Heart: Ministering by Love.’

The original policy, published in the spring of 2012, sparked opposition from media, homosexual activists, and some citizens in the town of 20,000 last spring because it expounded the Catechism’s teaching that homosexual acts are “gravely depraved” and the homosexual inclination is “objectively disordered.”

The controversy culminated in then-Minister of Education Scott Kent sending a letter to Whitehorse Bishop Gary Gordon in which he effectively told the bishop that Church teaching on homosexuality was barred from publicly-funded Catholic schools because it violates the equality provisions of Yukon law.

Bishop Gordon, who also serves as the diocese’s religious education director, agreed to draft a new policy, which he released in July.

Chicago experience shows that closely watching groups which take CCHD money gets good results

When a statewide immigrant-rights coalition endorsed same-sex marriage this past spring, 11 groups were given a stark choice by a Roman Catholic anti-poverty program: Leave the coalition, or lose their Catholic funding.

Eight of the groups decided to stick with the Illinois Coalition for Immigration and Refugee Rights. Another group broke with both. All told, the nine groups gave up grants totaling nearly $300,000 from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development…

Editor’s note: The opportunity for corruption and scandal in these types of (CCHD) endeavors is so huge, it’s time the Catholic Church got out of this business, entirely. Has no one in the Catholic Church heard of the principle of subsidiarity? Let the parishes do these things, in their own neighborhoods – and let the local bishop remain responsible for seeing to it that the parish operates according to appropriate, authenticly Catholic standards and principles. If that fails, people ought to simply quit giving them money, at all!

Canadian pro-lifers “think outside of the box” to stay within the law and foil baby-killers.

Protesters from the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical reform have been demonstrating in Hamilton for about a month. Some of those protests involve hanging a banner over the Linc with the slogan “abortion kills children” and a bloody photo of a fetus.

But protesters aren’t attaching the banner to any city property — instead, they’re tying the banner to their bodies and standing next to the edge of the overpass. That technicality ties the city’s hands, says Ward 7 Coun. Scott Duvall.

“We were hoping to get them on the sign by-law, but they are not hanging these signs on public property, they are attaching the signs to their bodies,” Duvall told CBC Hamilton.

Interview with fired Radio Maria journalist who criticized Pope Francis’ ambiguous pronouncements, objective philosophical and doctrinal errors.

ilfoglio

We speak to each other as fellow journalists: We discuss the classic case of a non-message.

Here are two baptized Catholics who have heard for months what the Pope says and for months experienced discomfort, while that’s obviously what they hear are very large steps away from what the doctrine says.

At the end, after all, it is their job to write and comment, write and comment on them. Thus, it provides not only a basic rule of information, but also the Church law.

The letter to Scalfari, the interview with Scalfari, the interview with the Civilta Cattolica , are only the most recent, glaring examples. They went around the world, they led to calls for revolution, they amazed thousands upon thousands of Catholics, and thus souls, and no one has something to say?

There’s much more

Editor’s note: The U.S. Secret Service trains its agents to identify counterfeit money by making absolutely certain that those agents are able to successfully identify, describe and enumerate all the various characteristics of genuine U.S. currency, because when you know the real thing, even the best of the counterfeits is relatively simple to identify.

Similarly, a Catholic who knows God and thoroughly knows all the authentic teachings and precepts of the Catholic faith instantly “alerts” when anyone – even a pope – proposes something which fails to pass the “smell test”.

The modernists and liberals who have been running the Catholic Church for the last half century have done their best to dumb-down the Body of Christ through incomplete, incompetent, ineffective and otherwise, exquisitely poor catechesis, so it’s no wonder that so many of today’s Catholics seem to be thrilled with what Pope Francis has been saying and how he has been saying it.
