  1. What is the point of the blog-post headline here? Is it that the US president should be toughing it up with Russia, risking WW-III? Getting into even more business that is not ours?

If this is the point, I thought the blogger had better sense. If I misconstrue or over-interpret, please excuse my density. The comic strip is funny.

    • The point is Jimmy Carter’s foreign policy snafus began the devolution and destabilization of the Middle East and that process has rapidly devolved under the similar policies of his political successor, Barack Obama. Historically, weakness and poor strategic planning has always been a welcome mat for greedy tyrants and other types of political opportunists, often leading to unnecessary armed conflicts.

      • “Historically, weakness and poor strategic planning has always been a welcome mat for greedy tyrants and other types of political opportunists, often leading to unnecessary armed conflicts.”

You have just accurately described (“greedy tyrants” et al.) the previous and present US administrations and their foreign policies, which thrive on instability and conflict and have created both of these conditions at nearly every turn. The current president and his immediate predecessor have more than earned their spurs as war mongers and mass murderers.

When we are attacked or proximately threatened with attack on our own soil, then—and only then—are we justified in fighting back. Absent that, the US needs to mind its own damn business and stay out of the business of other nations (those in the Middle East most especially), except to exercise just diplomacy and just trade.

“War is the health of the state.” This is why more presidents than not have so eagerly pursued warfare.

      • War has become a tool for preserving and protecting the financial interests of well connected cronies. So much for “just” diplomacy and trade!

      • Indeed, what you just wrote. This is the essence of fascism, i.e. the corporate welfare/warfare state. It is not our future. It is our present and grows more deadly by the day: complete with the jack-booted government thugs/enforcers.

Abroad, they are called our “military.” And at home, just look at the costumes of the equally militarized and heavily armed police forces that are now typical everywhere from our biggest cities to some of our smallest towns. They attack and murder citizens of all ages, sexes and races with impunity in the name of this or that “war” (on crime, on drugs, on child abuse, on whatever) invoking, in nearly all instances, “officer safety.”

In such a state, justice is to be found nowhere in either foreign or domestic policy. Raw, ruthless power—its acquisition, retention and growth—is the sole principle of those who govern us.
