Insofar as things of a sacred character are concerned, whether pertaining to the salvation of souls or the worship of God, the State has no authority whatsoever over the Holy Roman Catholic Church.

    The exceptions in the headline duly noted, they don’t hold when the CDC issues even “guidelines”. That’s just one example of the state’s control over the Church in the US.

    But the strongest state control of the Church in the US is spelled 501(c)(3).

    • Many/most Catholic churches are not incorporated as 501c3’s. The blanket constitutional protections are typically adequate to protect mainline churches from taxes and govt. regulation, without the 501c3 provision. – Doug
