Barred volunteer’s lawsuit claims defamation by Catholic Diocese.

“This ban is diocesan wide and includes not showing up or participating in any youth or young people’s events,” wrote Vicar General Stephen Berg. Letters outlining Jordan’s ban from volunteering were distributed throughout the diocese, which serves 710,000 Catholics in 28 counties.

For Jordan, also a high-ranking official in the Knights of Columbus who had worked with young people in San Antonio and the Fort Worth area, it was a crushing blow, not only to his reputation but one that has destroyed his life as a Catholic.

To restore his reputation and his place in the church, Jordan filed a defamation suit against the diocese earlier last week.

Father John Corapi’s Kafkaesque Catch-22

When a good priest’s good name is under siege these days, the situation he faces is best summed up in a combination of two terms from classic literature used in my title. What Father John Corapi and other accused priests face is an all-too-familiar “Kafkaesque Catch-22.”

“Kafkaesque” refers to an oppressive, nightmarish situation from which there seems no escape. It’s a reference to the fictional worlds created by Czech writer Franz Kafka (1883-1924) who wrote in German. “Kafkaesque” is today used to describe a scenario like that in Kafka’s most famous novel, The Trial (1925). It’s the story of an innocent man accused and facing trial, but subtly prevented from offering any defense because the tools for doing so elude him at every turn while prosecutors lurk in the shadows with agendas and motives that are never clear.

A “Catch-22″ is also a situation with no hope of resolution because two mutually incompatible conditions are imposed, each countering and contradicting the other. The term comes from the title of a famous American novel, Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (Simon and Shuster, 1955). In Catch-22, a World War II U.S. Air Force pilot desperately wants to avoid combat duty. The only way to do so is to be judged insane. But wanting to avoid combat duty is itself seen as evidence of his sanity. So in the end, a claim of insanity to avoid combat ends up proving his sanity and fitness for combat.

Andy Asks: I’m not sure what to make of sites like this. Particularly this article. What’s your opinion?

Alice Answers: The article entitled, “The Apotheosis of Antichrist,” attacked Pope John Paul II as the Vatican was preparing for his recent beatification. Written by Br. Bruno Bonnet-Eymard, editor of “The Catholic Counter-Reformation in the 21st Century,” Br. Bruno is a member of Little Brothers and Little Sisters of the Sacred Heart, a small religious community founded by the late Fr. Georges de Nantes, a French priest, who was suspended a divinis by Apostolic Signature in 1966.

Rather than debate his diatribe against Pope John Paul’s character and sanctity, please consider the source (de Nantes) of these comments, many of which are scurrilous.

Fr. De Nantes hurled harsh criticisms against Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II when he accused them of heresy in his “Books of Accusation.” It was his “disrespect for the popes” that earned his suspension. The Catholic Counter Reformation, CRC, which Fr. de Nantes founded is deemed “outside the Catholic Church.” His fringe faction, “The Little Brothers and Little Sisters of the Sacred Heart” which belongs to the CRC, was labeled as a cult by the French Commission on Cults in its 1995 report. In 2001, Fr. De Nantes was forbidden to celebrate, give and receive the sacraments anywhere, which is the highest penalty before excommunication.

It seems ironic that Fr. de Nantes, who wrote “Pope John Paul II had faith in man,” expects his followers to have blind faith in his own opinions against two Catholic pontiffs. Faithful Catholics are called to respect the Magisterium of the Church, a stance which seemed to have eluded Fr. de Nantes and his successor, Br. Bonnet-Eymard. The writings of both men seem reminiscent of Martin Luther’s Reformation ramblings.

As Catholics we are called to support the Body of Christ. Not divide it. Sadly, Fr. de Nantes’ legacy bequeathed his egotistical agenda to Br. Bonnet Eymard.

Doug Lawrence Adds: Many of these sites are well intentioned, and may even be at least partially correct in some instances, regarding some issues … while others are totally outrageous and impossible to reconcile with either common sense or the one, true faith. Still, it’s often hard to tell one from another.

An alert, thoroughly educated and well-read Catholic can usually spot problem areas in a New York minute, while others may be easily led astray, and may even have their faith unnecessarily attacked and/or improperly tested.

Issues are often addressed in a way that combines the worst of two worlds: religion and politics. For most people, that spells nothing but trouble!

Best to avoid such sites unless you really need to go there … and you really know your faith, your politics, and your history. If in doubt, evaluate the content and demeanor of the website in light of common sense, common courtesy, and relevant Catholic Canon Law:

Canon 212.3 states: “According to the knowledge, competence, and prestige which they possess,
[the faithful] have the right and even the duty to manifest to the sacred pastors their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church and to make their opinion known to the rest of the Christian faithful, without prejudice to the integrity of the faith and morals, with reverence toward their pastors, and attentive to common advantage and the dignity of persons.”

This is 100% speculation on my part, so don’t take any of it as anything else. I have only anecdotes to reference that inspired this speculation. I think he upset the homosexual network within the hierarchy. In 2006 he did a series called “Catholic Come Home” and he blasted homosexual activity with a level of force that would have made Bishop Williamson tell him to dial it back if he’d been in the room.

In 2010 he touched on the subject again and clearly stated the Church’s talking points on the subject but he also added the usual don’t harass, ridicule or treat badly anyone suffering with this disorder. It was fine, but he definitely made an effort to soften the edges of his presentation. I suspected that somebody in the hierarchy got to him on that issue and ordered him to change his approach.

This no doubt. The militant homosexuals who have infiltrated the Church over the years despise this man greatly and have had it out for him for years. They will attempt to destroy Fr’s ministry anyway they can and are not concerned about playing by the rules. The homosexuals are an especially nasty group and will pull out all the stops in getting what they want, just like in the secular world.

There was a thread started about homosexuality collapsing empires, well they’re doing their best to collapse the Church even at a time where the church has gone out of it’s way placating them and sugarcoating their “disorder”, they don’t care about that, they want 100% acceptance and equality and the education of children into their “lifestyle”.. Nothing else will suffice.

Also as mentioned in other threads, there is a war going on right now within the Church and the usurpers need to get good priests Fr Corapi and Fr E out of the way so the real onslaught can begin. I even see them going after the pro-life priests next in their little culture war against the more conservative clergy across the board.

The politics behind the Father Corapi affair

WANTED: Two disinterested priest/investigators

There seems to be an ongoing dispute over precisely who exercises the ultimate “canonical authority” over Father John Corapi and his chosen religious order, the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT).

The statement of Santa Cruz Media appears to place the responsibility on Bishop William Mulvey of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Texas, while Father Gerard Sheehan, the regional head of Father Corapi’s religious order, invites us to infer that the decisions are all his.

Anyone who is familiar with standard church procedure will tell you that the local bishop is always fully engaged in high profile matters of this type, and while religious orders are typically granted wide latitude to run their communities, they nearly always defer to the authority of the local bishop.

So it seems pretty clear that Father Corapi’s people already know who’s really in charge … no matter what the “official line” might be.

Meanwhile, we are advised that, for a number of reasons, the investigation is on hold, while the diocese searches for two properly qualified and appropriately disinterested priests, from outside the order, to head it up.

Nothing has been revealed about Bishop Mulvey’s personal impression of Father Corapi, his work, or his particular lifestyle, but it’s not hard to infer from the Santa Cruz Media statement, that the Corapi camp is worried. And they should be, since (as far as I can determine) no other modern day Catholic priest (anywhere) has ever been granted Father Corapi’s particular level of personal and financial autonomy.

The worst thing that could happen is a long, drawn out investigation, followed by an extended bout of canonical “rope-a-dope” between the diocese and the religious order, followed either by official sanctions … or a significant “reigning in” … for the good of the priesthood … of Father Corapi’s various activities.

This could easily take a number of years to play out … and no matter how things are finally resolved … it’s not likely to be pretty.

But miracles do happen. I’m reminded of an even more serious personal allegation made against the late Joseph Cardinal Bernadin, which the accuser eventually retracted, leaving the good Cardinal fully in the clear. Fortuitously, the Cardinal had substantial financial resources at his disposal … as does Father Corapi.

Thinking of  Cardinals … maybe we can bring Cardinal Bernard Law back from his cushy post in Italy … and perhaps we can bring Archbishop Rembert Weakland back from his comfortable retirement … to lead the investigation?

In short, no matter what the outcome, Father Corapi is in a very tough spot. This has already been a life-changing event for him … with many more changes likely to come … and he’s going to need all the prayers and support we can give him.

Clohessy of SNAP wants to dish more “dirt” on Father Corapi

David Clohessy, who directs the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, known as SNAP, called on Bishop Howard Hubbard to “seek out anyone who may have suspicions or knowledge of misdeeds by Corapi in the New York area.”

“We don’t know the age or gender of Corapi’s accuser, nor do we know anything about the allegations against him,” Clohessy said. “But we do know that America’s Catholic hierarchy has repeatedly pledged to be ‘open and transparent’ in clergy sexual abuse cases. That’s not really happening here.”
