Dirty little secret: Many of today’s “Fallen away Catholics” were first left spiritually and morally abandoned by the “Fallen Away, Know-Nothing Catholic Church” of the 1970’s.

Smoke

by Doug Lawrence

Coming of age in the early 1970’s and looking to the Catholic Church for guidance on faith, family and other matters of critical import brought only shrugs, along with the continuing assurance that I would be just fine if only I managed to follow my conscience.

But how could I follow my conscience on matters I knew nothing about? Wasn’t there somebody who could provide a reliable Catholic perspective for me – perhaps a local priest or a bishop? (Sound of crickets chirping.)

That was my personal experience with the “New Pentecost” which led to the “New Springtime” of the post-Vatican II Catholic Church – and it took me more than twenty years to get over it!

It wasn’t until I eventually developed a modicum of personal maturity, along with the necessary research skills, that I managed to overcome the ecclesial nonsense, fend off the rampant incompetence and corruption, and finally develop a working understanding of the one, true faith – no thanks to anyone in the church, except God!

It was then that I discovered – or more correctly – rediscovered – the power and the glory that is still ever present in the Holy Catholic Church – despite the rabble and the schmucks (I’m really trying to remain charitable here) who continue (on a daily basis ) to do everything in their power to run it into the ground!

The clerics of the 1970’s Catholic Church were AWOL when I most needed them, and due to the wide-spread apostasy and modernism embedded in virtually every part of the institutional church, many of them remain (at least, spiritually) absent without leave, today!

Modernism is the present day equivalent of Original Sin, since it corrupts everything! I have little doubt that when Pope Paul VI spoke of the Smoke of Satan somehow finding its way into the Temple of God, it was actually Modernism of which he spoke!

For example: At this past Sunday’s Mass I was subjected to a homily, consisting of at least forty percent pure heresy, that was later followed by vigorous applause from the entire congregation (minus one – me).

What used to get a person (particularly a priest) sanctioned, or even burned at the stake, now generates spontaneous applause and wide-spread approval!

Witness the “Francis Effect” in action!

God help us!

A colossal Catholic Church failure of such massive proportions, it boggles the mind!

Upside-down flag as a distress signal

by Doug Lawrence

Reminiscing about going to Catholic school in the 1950’s and 60’s in Chicago, when the post-war baby boomers swelled the ranks of the student body by a factor of two or three, we remembered the wonderful, Jesus-centered teaching Sisters who somehow managed to maintain control of their classrooms, in spite of having over fifty young children in their charge. They even managed to do it with a certain dignity, grace (and yes, even serenity) that’s seldom seen in this day and age!

Monthly tuition was generally less than $5 per student ($45 per school year) – with substantial discounts available for families with several children – and the quality of the education was unsurpassed!

It wasn’t uncommon to have three or more classes per grade level, with fifty or more children in each – all of them good little Catholic saints-in-training.

Thanks to the dedicated sisters and the Baltimore Catechism, the children actually knew all of the basic Catholic prayers – as well as who made the world, who God is, who man is, why God made them – and many other critically important Catholic concepts and truths!

Common sense tells us that such a huge wave
of well trained, superbly disciplined Catholic children
should have soon blossomed into the mainstream world,
profoundly and permanently changing things for the better,
elevating the public status of the Catholic Church to new heights
and attracting a virtual flood of new converts.

Only that’s not what happened.

You see – somebody came up with the idea to call a Church Council – and to use that Council to introduce strange, radical changes – supposedly intended to reinvigorate the decrepit, crumbling and hopelessly out of date Catholic Church of the Ages.

This would almost certainly usher in a “New Springtime” for the Church and initiate an era of growth, peace and unity never before seen by mankind.

Yeah … right!

What we got instead was a Catholic Church in apostasy and chaos, dominated by radicals and wackos who held distinct Protestant, Communist and yes, even Masonic ideologies.

For a time, it became a “know-nothing” church – where you couldn’t get a straight answer about anything. It was also seriously divided along secular political lines. Because of all this, and despite the misleading public facade, the Catholic Church was able to function at only a very minimal level.

A mere shadow of its former self, the “new” Church, for a time, was of little practical use to anyone – except for a precious few of God’s very elect – and of course – for many of the incompetents, homosexual pederasts, clericalists, heretics and careerists who remained (and unfortunately, still remain) in power.

When chaos reigns, almost anything goes!

This is what we baby boomer Catholics were faced with, as we went out to make our way in the world. Our “train” had wrecked and we found ourselves wandering alone, through an unknown spiritual landscape that was fraught with unparalleled confusion, corruption and ruin.

When we eventually managed to make our way back and reestablish contact with Holy Mother Church, we found that she had become almost unrecognizable!

Mark H. – one of our regular readers and frequent commenters – recently pointed out the type of damage that can occur when unelected liberal elitists who happen to be in charge of things, band together to arbitrarily recreate a community, in their own tragically flawed image and likeness.

For the Catholic Church, it meant the spiritual abortion
of nearly an entire generation of faithful Catholics.

For the world at large, it would soon mean
the literal abortion of millions of innocent babies,
along with the normalization
of many other abominable forms of moral apostasy.

This was, without a doubt, one of the most colossal failures
of moral leadership in the history of the modern world.

It should be noteworthy that it was the leadership
of the Catholic Church which was the first to fall,
opening the gates for all that would later come to pass.

This “Mystery of Iniquity” is one of the reasons I keep coming back to 2nd Thessalonians 2:1-17:

(1) And we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and of our gathering together unto him:
(2) That you be not easily moved from your sense nor be terrified, neither by spirit nor by word nor by epistle. as sent from us, as if the day of the Lord were at hand.
(3) Let no man deceive you by any means: for unless there come a revolt first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition
(4) Who opposeth and is lifted up above all that is called God or that is worshipped, so that he sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself as if he were God.
(5) Remember you not that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
(6) And now you know what withholdeth, that he may be revealed in his time.
(7) For the mystery of iniquity already worketh: only that he who now holdeth do hold, until he be taken out of the way.
(8) And then that wicked one shall be revealed: whom the Lord Jesus shall kill with the spirit of his mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: him
(9) Whose coming is according to the working of Satan, in all power and signs and lying wonders:
(10) And in all seduction of iniquity to them that perish: because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
(11) Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying:
(12) That all may be judged who have not believed the truth but have consented to iniquity.
(13) But we ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, beloved of God, for that God hath chosen you firstfruits unto salvation, in sanctification of the spirit and faith of the truth:
(14) Whereunto also he hath called you by our gospel, unto the purchasing of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(15) Therefore, brethren, stand fast: and hold the traditions, which you have learned, whether by word or by our epistle.
(16) Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God and our Father, who hath loved us and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope in grace,
(17) Exhort your hearts and confirm you in every good work and word.

Vatican II – the “pastoral council” that brought chaos to the Church – even before the close of its final session.

V-2 -09

Contrary to the official party line, Vatican II was no “love-fest”

Could the great apostasy brought on by diabolically disoriented popes be what is spoken of in the portion of the Third Secret of Fatima that has yet to be revealed?

Let’s consider the testimony of Cardinal Ciappi, who read the Third Secret.  Cardinal Ciappi was a distinguished theologian from the pontifical household from 1955 to 1989.  In a letter to Professor Baumgartner, the Cardinal made an astonishing admission about the Third Secret.

He wrote: “In the Third Secret it is predicted, among other things, that the great apostasy in the Church will begin at the top. (6) Notice, he didn’t say it would begin “near the top”, but “at the top” – the same pattern we have seen repeated throughout history.

In a 1984 interview, Cardinal Ratzinger also spoke of the contents of the Third Secret of Fatima.

The interviewer asked: “Have you read what is called the Third Secret of Fatima?”  To his surprise, the Cardinal answered “yes”, and then went on to discuss what it contained.  The Cardinal said “the things contained within the ‘Third Secret’ correspond to what has been announced in Scripture and has been said again and again in many other Marian Apparitions”.  (As an aside, we must ask where Scripture speaks of the failed assassination attempt of John Paul II?)

Continuing on, the Cardinal said the Third Secret speaks of “dangers threatening the Faith… and the importance of the ‘novissimi ’[the end times].”

Once again we see a prelate, who had read the Third Secret, state that it refers to dangers threatening the Faith.

But perhaps the most interesting statement comes from Paul VI himself on the sixtieth anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun, during which he spoke of apostasy at the very “summit” of the Church, which confirms what Cardinal Ciappi wrote to Professor Baumgartner.  Here is what Paul VI had to say on October 13, 1977:

The tail of the devil is functioning in the disintegration of the Catholic world. The darkness of Satan has entered and spread throughout the Catholic Church even to its summit. Apostasy, the loss of the faith, is spreading throughout the world and into the highest levels within the Church.  (7)

Is it just a coincidence that Paul VI made this statement on the anniversary of Fatima?   It seems unlikely.  It seems more likely that he was revealing what is contained in the Third Secret.

But if this is what the Third Secret contains, when would it begin?  Is there a particular date that one could look to as the beginning of this great apostasy that would begin “at the top” – at the very “summit” of the Church?

In the famous 1957 interview of Sister Lucy of Fatima with Fr. Fuentes, about the events of Fatima, the cloistered nun asked her interviewer the following question: “Father, how much time is there before 1960 arrives?”  Why would she ask about the date 1960?  She then went on to explain.  She said when this date arrives, “it will be very sad for everyone, not one person will rejoice at all if beforehand the world does not pray and do penance.”  She then ended by saying: “I am not able to give any other details because it is still a secret.

How much did Adam (the first man) actually, know?

genesis

As we know, this magnificent angel – the greatest creature God had created up to that time – disobeyed God and fell into apostasy, and in so doing brought one third of the other angels with him.  The angels who thought to themselves, “we would rather be wrong with Lucifer than right without him”, got their wish and became demons, while those who remained faithful to God, in spite of the apostasy of their divinely appointed leader, were immediately confirmed in grace and now reign with God in heaven.

After the fall of the bad angels, God created man.  He endowed the first man with the preternatural gifts of integrity, bodily immortality, impassibility, and infused knowledge, which perfected him according to nature, as well as the supernatural gift of grace, which elevated his soul to the supernatural level, thereby making him a “partaker of the Divine Nature” (2 Peter 1:4).   By the gift of infused knowledge, Adam knew all that he had a natural aptitude to know (2), including knowledge of the physical universe, both material and spiritual, the moral law, the Divine Attributes of God, and man’s relationship to his creator” (3), as well as the supernatural knowledge necessary to guide him and his descendants to their supernatural end. (4)  All of the gifts Adam received would have been passed down to his posterity, with the exception of infused knowledge.

The reason his descendants would not have received this gift, according to St. Thomas, is because Adam was to be the teacher of all other men. (5) As father of the human race, he was to instruct and govern mankind, just as Lucifer was to govern and enlighten the lower angels. As we know, Adam, the father of the human race and divinely appointed teacher of all men, disobeyed God and fell into sin, thereby causing the Fall of the entire human race.  But unlike the angels who fell, God did not abandon man, but instead promised to send a Redeemer.

Engel: USCCB is running a disinformation campaign in order to promote homosexuality and pederasty, among other things.

In his classic work New Lies For OldThe Communist Strategy of Deception and Disinformation, ex-KGB Soviet defector Anatoliy Golitsyn defines “strategic disinformation” as “a systematic effort to disseminate false information and to distort or withhold information so as to misrepresent the real situation, in, and policies of, the communist world and thereby to confuse, deceive, and influence the noncommunist world, to jeopardize its policies, and to induce Western adversaries to contribute unwittingly to the achievement of communist objectives.” [1]

Over the last 40 years, a similar program of strategic disinformation and deception has been waged against faithful Catholics in America by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops/U.S. Catholic Conference (NCCB/USCC), known today as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

From day one, with malice and forethought, the NCCB/USCC, a creature of the Second Vatican Council (although its roots go back to the pre-Conciliar era), has been systematically attacking and undermining Catholic dogma, faith, and morals, thereby creating a climate of confusion, deception, and apostasy among rank and file Catholics.

Writer Chronicles the Revolution That Almost Destroyed the Catholic Church (And It’s Not Over!)

The Desolate City

By Ann Roche Muggeridge

The worldwide implosion of the Roman Catholic Church during the years 1960-1980 is, in my opinion, one of history’s greatest mysteries.  How could a millennia-old institution so large, vigorous, and self-disciplined collapse essentially overnight?  I’ve read several books on this topic, and The Desolate City is, by far, the best.  Muggeridge claims that the Church has suffered a revolution, and so she proceeds to study the crucial post-conciliar years by analogies with revolutions in the secular/political sphere.

Her template for a revolution begins with a vigorous but disgruntled class—usually the class next to the top rather than one of the lower orders—that feels that it is not being given the power its merits deserve.  The disgruntled class uses its authority within the system to undermine the system by criticizing and ridiculing the ruling order in front of the lower classes.  These “rituals of revolution” prepare the public psychologically for the overthrow of the old order.  The government tries in various ways to appease the revolutionaries, which they take to be a sign of weakness.  Finally, the revolutionaries move into open defiance.  When the government fails to suppress them, people start defecting to the new revolutionary power center en masse.  The revolution solidifies its control of all public institutions, and the old government is effectively overthrown.

This, Muggeridge claims, is what’s happened to the Catholic Church.  Here, the government is the Magisterium:  the Pope and loyal bishops.  The disgruntled class is the clerical intelligentsia:  the teaching religious orders, the bureaucrats in the national episcopal conferences, and (especially) the theologians.  The revolution, as Muggeridge calls it, has succeeded in establishing control over the Church at all levels except the very top.  How did the revolutionary intelligentsia gain so much power?   It came through a dreadful miscalculation on the part of the bishops.  The latter had hoped at Vatican II to secure more freedom from curial (i.e. papal) interference, and to this end they allied themselves with the radicals (who at the time were pretending to be mostly orthodox).  Once the radicals had established their control over the conciliar implementation commissions and the bishops’ bureaucracies, the masks were discarded and the bishops found they could no longer control their own diocese.

Argentina’s unholy alliance with apostate Catholicism

Córdoba, Argentina, April 3, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Karina Villarroel and Soledad Ortiz will become the first lesbian “married” couple to have a child receive Catholic baptism in Argentina Saturday in a ceremony at the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Cordoba that observers fear is a ploy to subvert Catholic teaching on marriage.

Argentinean President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who was instrumental in the passage of same-sex “marriage” in 2010, has agreed to act as godmother.

Villarroel and Ortiz with baby Umma

“We had a hearing with Archbishop [Carlos] Ñáñez and he told us there was no problem with our daughter being baptized in the Cathedral,” Villarroel told the local newspaper, La Voz del Interior.

According to local church sources this baptism “would have been much more difficult if Jorge Bergoglio were not the Pope.”

Editor’s note: Not only is the lesbian couple unfit to raise the child as Catholic, but the chosen godmother – due in part to to her publicly stated political goals and accomplishments – is also similarly unfit.

This abomination is taking place with the full consent of the Argentinian Catholic Church – and allegedly, Pope Francis, as well. While the pope may choose to remain silent on this, there’s no way he can avoid the ultimate responsibility.

There was a time, not long after the Second Vatican Council, when the bishops who wanted to suppress the Church’s ancient liturgy or desecrate her traditions could do so with impunity.

vaticanii

That time is over. This is an age of accountability. When something sacred is treated as disposable, when communities of believers are punished with forced allegiance to Modernist changes they have legitimately and prudently chosen to avoid, that’s a place where the light should shine.

I don’t know about you, but I want my Catholicism back. I want a Church I can be proud of, a Church that remembers what it believes in. A Church that doesn’t scandalize so deeply that it damages or even destroys the faith of its own members and makes no effort to appeal to those outside her bosom except when creating the false appearance that non-negotiable things have become negotiable.

If this isn’t the foretold time of apostasy, it must be the precursor.

Praying for rain: What Catholic bishops ought to be praying for is an end to California’s sinful apostasy

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. –  Catholic bishops called for divine intervention Tuesday as California endures what appears to be its third straight dry winter.

The California Conference of Catholic Bishops asked people of all faiths to join in prayers for rain as reservoirs in the state dipped to historic lows after one of the driest calendar years on record.

Some cities already are restricting water use, while prospects for another dry summer have raised alarm about agriculture and wildfires.

This comprehensive 16 minute video is well worth viewing. Liberals won’t see anything wrong with the Pope’s comments , but for everyone else, this video should be a “wake-up call” and a stark object lesson, directly from the old Baltimore Catechism.

Unlike many of today’s Catholic clerics, academics and theologians, traditionalist layman John Vennari is quite capable of explaining and defending the Catholic faith as it always has been, as opposed to what apostates and heretics would like it to become.

Let’s consider the testimony of Cardinal Ciappi who read the Third Secret.  Cardinal Ciappi was a distinguished theologian from the pontifical household from 1955 to 1989.  In a letter to Professor Baumgartner, the Cardinal made an astonishing admission about the Third Secret.  He wrote: “In the Third Secret it is predicted, among other things, that the great apostasy in the Church will begin at the top.” (6) Notice, he didn’t say it would begin “near the top”, but “at the top” – the same pattern we have seen repeated throughout history.

(As an aside, we must ask where Scripture speaks of the failed assassination attempt of John Paul II?)  Continuing on, the Cardinal said the Third Secret speaks of “dangers threatening the Faith… and the importance of the ‘novissimi ’[the end times].”  Once again we see a prelate, who had read the Third Secret, state that it refers to dangers threatening the Faith.

Polish priest quits SSPX and also throws in the towel on the post-Vatican II Church.

Editor’s note: Rev. Raphael Trytek makes some very interesting points – points which every faithful Catholic ought to prudently and prayerfully consider, during this official Year of Faith.

For nearly half a century since, Christian life remains eclipsed under the propagation of what the Church has infallibly condemned over centuries as Modernistic errors and heresies, such as: 1) Religious freedom, essentially leading to the acceptance of state atheism; 2) falsely conceived Ecumenism -whether equalization of false religious doctrines to the One True Catholic Church, or acknowledgment of other religions, including even Judaism, Islam, and Paganism, as means leading to salvation; 3) the erroneous conception of the Church of Christ as not identical with the Catholic Church, but as a wider entity that includes the Catholic Church without being limited to it; 4) the advancement of one global syncretistic religion; 5) adherence to Masonic ideas, such as the propagation of alleged “natural” rights of man, which essentially becomes an expression of anthropocentrism.

It is impossible for the True Church of Christ and for Her Hierarchy – Pope and Bishops remaining in union with him- to subscribe to that apostasy! Whoever is willing to preserve and to confess the Catholic Faith, must acknowledge that the institution that insistently peddles and publicly proclaims so shameful errors, has nothing in common with the true Catholic Church…

Additional note: The website which posted this article continues to maintain that the post-Vatican II Catholic Church and hierarchy are not truly Catholic, and that the Chair of St. Peter, along with the sees of many bishops, are presently occupied by usurpers.

This sounds a lot like what the Obama regime is currently attempting to do to the government of the United States – and we know that Barack Obama is certainly not Catholic!

A 50-year personal retrospective: Vatican II was no “New Pentecost”.

by Doug Lawrence

Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 2, chronicles the authentic events of the first Christian Pentecost, which were shortly followed by the miraculous expansion of the Church and the subsequent baptism of countless souls, all over the known world.

The Catholic Church came into existence on Pentecost. The fire enkindled by the Holy Spirit on that great day still burns bright. Billions of souls, from scores of generations, subsequently came to know and love God, through their faithful participation in the work, worship, sacraments and devotions of the Catholic Church.

There was nothing sufficiently wrong with the Catholic Church to warrant anything like the destructive and spiritually violent “New Pentecost of the 1960’s” that has since been blasphemously proclaimed by so many, for so long, with little more than 50 years of  “rotten fruit” to show for it.

I lived through the heady days of the 2nd Vatican Council, which was shortly followed by what was arguably the greatest apostasy in the Catholic Church, that the world has yet witnessed.

I knew the pre-Vatican II Catholic Church. I loved the pre-Vatican II Catholic Church. Through the good offices and sacraments of the pre-Vatican II Catholic Church, I came to be a friend of God. All of that was turned upside down, violently torn asunder, ransacked and roughly trampled underfoot (sometimes literally) in the riotous aftermath of the council known as Vatican II.

That’s why I can say with certainty that Vatican II was NO “New Pentecost”. It was instead, a purely political (not “pastoral”) revolution, that for a time, effectively took over the leadership of the Holy Catholic Church, to absolutely NO good end. And it may well take another hundred years, with God’s good help, to properly restore all that has been lost.

So, there’s your 50-year retrospective on the 2nd Vatican Council, through the eyes of one still exasperated Catholic soul, who actually lived through it!

Vatican II “has changed centuries of metaphysics into pitiable anthropology.”

By accepting the world’s mass-media language, the Church was compelled to submit to its rules.  The aim of the Church is the proclamation of the Truth, whatever it costs, while in the universe of the mass-media, the aim of the message is not the transmission of the truth, but only the diffusion of the message itself. But the message, at times, is spread more widely when it hides or deforms a truth,  and the success of the communication prevails over the truth of the message communicated.  Since the means is the message, in the final analysis, the scene is dominated by the means of communication, which communicate only themselves. In philosophical terms, they are not interested in what Kant would have called the thing in itself, the “noumenon”, but the phenomenon.   What is “true” is only that which is communicated and to what extent the message is diffused.

What are the fruits of this pastoral change? The most evident and sensational is in the crisis of the priesthood.  To give an example, in France on the eve of the Council, almost a thousand priests were ordained each year. In 2010 there were 88 priests ordained, less than 10 percent of what took place way back then. But going beyond the numbers, what is evident and palpable is the crisis in spirituality, which is expressed in the substitution of contemplation with that of the primacy of action.

The majority of priests today are affected by the disease of “doing” , in other words, of a frenetic activism which makes them forget prayer and adoration.

Feminist apostasy in Rochester, NY – aided and abetted by local bishop

As of May 11, according to the administrators of the website cleansingfiredor.com, which meticulously documents the rise of Clark’s lay-run womanchurch, there are five women religious in charge of 11 churches, including Sr. Joan Sobala, SSJ, a key player in the Women’s Ordination Conference, who runs two churches, St. Anne and Our Lady of Lourdes; Sr. Karen Dietz, SSJ, who runs three churches, St. Agnes, St. Rose, St. Paul of the Cross; Sr. Chris Treichel, OSF, who runs two churches, Sacred Heart and St. Ann; Sr. Joan Cawley, SSJ, who runs the Church of the Resurrection; and Sr. Diane Dennie, SSJ, who runs three churches, St. Michael, St. John the Evangelist, and St. Patrick.

Six laywomen run 12 churches. Deb Housel is in charge of four churches, with “sacramental minister” Fr. Paul Gitau: St. Michael, Corpus Christi, St. Andrew, and Church of the Annunciation. A fifth church she ran, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, recently closed. Charlotte Bruney runs St. Vincent de Paul. Irene Goodwin runs St. Mary of the Assumption; Anne-Marie Brogan runs St. Mary, in downtown Rochester; Margaret Ostromecki runs two churches, St. Thomas More and Our Lady Queen of Peace; Barbara Swiecki runs three churches, Good Shepherd, Guardian Angels, St. Joseph. Meanwhile, two laymen run six churches: William Rabjohn runs St. Pius X and Michael Sauter has five parishes.

Another Women’s Ordination Conference activist, Nancy DeRycke, is not now serving as a lay administrator but had done so for several years at Church of the Resurrection, St. Helen, St. Margaret Mary, and Good Shepherd.

“These lay administrators,” The Wanderer was informed by the administrator of cleansingfiredor.com, “direct the pastoral care of their parishes. They are in charge and answer to the bishop. Priests assigned under lay administrators serve as ‘sacramental ministers’ or ‘assisting priest’ and are little more than sacramental Pez machines. The administrator calls all the shots, often delivers a homily, wears an alb, and sits in the sanctuary alongside the priest, stands up to deliver commentary during Mass, and some have even performed the preliminaries of Baptism. These administrators preside over parish council meetings in violation of canon law. And, of course, the administrators list their names at the top of parish bulletins.”

Proposals for a Correct “Reading” of the Second Vatican Council

Editor’s Rule Number One: Any time you see the word “pastoral” … replace it with the word “political” … as in liberal, radical progressive, left wing … “change”.

by Bishop Athanasius Schneider, ORC

Given at a conference of cardinals and bishops held in Rome, December 17, 2010. The author is auxiliary bishop of Karaganda, Kazakhstan.

The primacy of the worship of God as the basis of all true pastoral theology.

I. The theological foundation of pastoral theology

To speak correctly of pastoral theory and practice, it is necessary first to be conscious of their foundation and their theological aim. The aim of the Church is the aim of the Incarnation: “propter nostram salutem.” This is how the faith and the prayer of the Church are expressed: “Qui propter nos homines et propter nostram salutem descendit de caelis et incarnatus est…. et homo factus est.” This salvation means the salvation of the soul for eternal life. The purpose of the Church’s whole juridical and pastoral order also consists of this salvation, as the last canon of the Code of Canon Law tells us: “prae oculis habita salute animarum, quae in Ecclesia suprema semper lex esse debet.” (can. 1752)
