Today’s Question: Did Jesus tell us to keep the (old) law?

Question:
Did Jesus tell us to keep the (old) law?

Answer: Prior to Jesus’ death and resurrection, the Old Law remained fully in force. Afterwards, by the power of Christ, the New Covenant and the Church replaced the entirety of the Old Law, which never had the ability to save a soul.

If the Old Law/Old Covenant had been sufficient, the “New” Covenant would not have been necessary; Nor would Christ’s perfect and atoning sacrifice on the cross, for the sins of the world.

Jesus also spoke about the folly of attempting to put new “wine” into old wine “skins”. This is precisely the type of thing to which he was referring.

The sole governing authority of the New Covenant is the Holy Catholic Church, which was given the Power of Binding and Loosing, as well as the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, by Christ himself.

Only that which the New Covenant Church authoritatively decided to readopt or re-adapt (from OT times) made the transition from old to new. Nothing else.

Conclusion: The Holy Catholic Church remains the sole governing authority under the New Covenant, as well as the primary channel of God’s grace on earth, with Jesus as its’ head and the Holy Spirit as its’ constant Advocate and Spirit of Truth.

Grace – not Law – now, mercifully reigns – in and through Jesus Christ, our Divine Redeemer – in God’s “New” and “Better” order of things.

That’s how Jesus set things up for us. He knew what he was doing. He’s God!

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
(Matthew 16:18-19)

And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer,
believing, ye shall receive.
(Matthew 21:22)

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
(Revelation 21:7-8)

The Pope and Infallibility: What’s the deal?

popeBenedictXVI2008f

Q: The Pope and infallibility: What’s the deal?

A: All the genuine prophets of old were also endowed with the power of infallibility when they spoke the “word of the Lord” to the people of Israel.

Caiaphas, the hopelessly corrupt high priest who sent Jesus to his death, was able to speak infallibly, according to the power of his office, occupying the “Chair of Moses” (John 11:49).

When speaking on matters of faith and morals, as the chief pastor of the Church, and when he declares himself to be doing so, the Pope is also capable of speaking infallibly, occupying the “Chair of Peter”.

While this matter was officially confirmed by the whole church only a couple of hundred years ago, it was understood and accepted by the church since the earliest days, mainly because when God himself says that he will bind in Heaven whatever you (the pope) choose to bind on earth (Matthew 16:19) that is just about as infallible as any non-divine human can get.

Near as we can tell, over some 2,000 years, the pope has spoken infallibly in that way, only TWICE.

Nothing new, novel, or abusive there, at all.

I don’t understand how the Pope suddenly becomes God’s representitive, once elected

Q: I don’t understand how the Pope suddenly becomes God’s representitive, once elected.

A: Jesus personally established the holy office that today is known as the papacy, and he did it authoratatively and decisively, while he still walked the earth.

Since the Church will necessarily endure until the end of time, the Church proceeded to develop the mechanism to elect replacements and assistants for Peter and the apostles.

The bishops are the ordained rulers of the Church. The Pope, once elected from those ranks, becomes the primary ruler and chief pastor.

The power of binding and loosing was given to the Pope and to the bishops together, as the rulers of the Church, by Jesus Christ.

The “Keys to the Kingdom” … also personally given by Jesus, remain in the hands of the Pope alone.

Faithtful to his word, what the authentic Church binds on earth, God duly binds in Heaven.

Hence, when a new Pope is elected by the bishops of the Church the power and the authority of the office go with that appointment.

The Pope wields awesome and virtually unrestricted power. He remains the only absolute monarch on the planet, ruling both Church and the Vatican State. And he does it according to the express wishes and the foreknowledge of none other than Jesus Christ, who remains the head of the Catholic Church.

Some seem to think that corruption or other faults should disqualify one for the papacy, yet the Judeo-Christian tradition demonstrates just the opposite, since God has always been in the habit of using murders, thieves, adulterers, and worse, to do his will.

King David was an adulterer and a murderer, yet Jesus himself is descended from that royal line.

Such is the power of God and his grace.

In short, if the papacy is acceptable to Jesus, who personally established and constituted the office, and who remains the head of the Church, which will endure until the end of time, who are we to say anything to the contrary?

And should one attempt to reinterpret scripture according to their own ends, denying the facts of the papacy, and  attempting to make void the express acts of Christ himself … the authentic history of the world clearly affirms the existence of an authentic, supreme leader of the universal Church on earth, existing constantly from the day of Pentecost, right up through today, some 265 in number.
