Civil unions and “shacking up”: Concubinage under a different name.

In the past 40 years, it seems, concubinage has come to light again under a different name.

Like ancient concubinage, contemporary cohabitation is a deliberately ambiguous relationship. The partners make no promises and have no legal obligations to one another. The arrangement has no specified duration and can be terminated at a moment’s notice. Those who cohabit tend to be of lower social status. Their children, on average, do not fare as well as children born to married couples.

Joliet Catholic Charities puts brakes on adoptions as civil unions begin

A letter from Catholic Charities in Joliet to the state does not mention the civil unions but does address the issue of same-sex couples.

“It is the religious practice of Catholic Charities not to place children with unmarried, cohabiting couples, whether same sex or opposite sex,” says the letter from Glenn Van Cura, executive director of Catholic Charities in Joliet.

Mayor Rahm (“da Bomb”) Emanuel’s choice of words could have been better.

Officiating at the Millenium Park Civil Unions Ceremonies (mostly for homosexuals):

Mayor Emanuel told the couples they were embarking on a fruitful journey and gave them his blessing. He also officiated at the civil union of one of his top advisers and the union of his human relations commissioner Mona Noriega to her partner Evette Cardona.

Editor’s note: Is this Mayor Rahm’s attempt at humor … or simply a bad choice of words? And what about that “blessing”? Is Rahm a priest of some kind? If so, we appear to have a violation of the separation of church and state. Film at 10 (ABC7 Chicago).

10 Reasons Why Homosexual Marriage Is Wrong

1- It’s not marriage because procreation is impossible.
2- It violates the natural law of sexual purpose.
3- It always denies children either a mother or a father.
4- It promotes the homosexual lifestyle, known to spread the deadly disease AIDS.
5- It turns a moral wrong into a civil right.
6- It does not create a family, but rather a naturally sterile union.
7- It defeats the interest of government in promoting the family unit in society.
8- It imposes it’s acceptance on society, forcing Christians to violate their faith.
9- It’s another incremental step in the sexual degradation of society.
10- It GRAVELY offends God, our Creator.

The “CINO” (Catholic in name only) Governor of Illinois

Governor Pat Quinn, who is a Catholic, called the bill’s victory “a great day for the people of Illinois, for the family of Illinois,” and dismissed criticism from Springfield bishop Thomas Paprocki. Paprocki on Wednesday had challenged Quinn for stating that “my religious faith animates me” to support the civil unions bill, responding: “He did not say what religious faith that would be, but it certainly is not the Catholic faith.”

“If the governor wishes to pursue a secular agenda for political purposes, that is his prerogative for which he is accountable to the voters,” continued the bishop. “But if he wishes to speak as a Catholic, then he is accountable to Catholic authority, and the Catholic Church does not support civil unions or other measures that are contrary to the natural moral law.”

When told of the bishop’s comments, Quinn reportedly shrugged, saying: “I follow my conscience. I think everyone should do that. I think that’s the most important thing to do in life, and my conscience is not kicking me in the shins today.”

Roeser: It’s high time for the Gay Lobby to come clean and acknowledge that what it seeks is not tolerance…which to an overwhelming degree it has and deserves …but approval…approval that can only come from those who forsake the Judeo Christian moral tradition.

In Genesis (19:1-11) and Leviticus (18:22, 20:13)  the word of God pronounces that homosexuality is condemned in the story of Sodom, that Paul inveighs against the practice in Corinthians (6:9), Romans (1:18-32) and in the first chapter of his first letter to Timothy.

Some theological revisionists have said the passages pertain to other evils but one has to grunt until his eyes bug out to adjust to that formulation.

The important thing is that Meeks, his church and overwhelming number of Baptists subscribe.   Pronouncing their beliefs anathema to Meeks’ mayoral election is a startling overreach by McClelland and a clear-cut sanction of what may well be religious bigotry by NBC.

And of course this scriptural condemnation is not only subscribed to by Baptists but the overwhelming number of Christians including by my own Catholic Church.

“Civil Unions” typify what the Apostle Paul called “The Mystery of Iniquity.”

Inspired by yesterday’s column at TomRoeser.com:

Tom Roeser praised Cardinal George for his tireless advocacy against the Illinois civil unions bill, while taking to task the late Cardinal Bernardin, who, to a great degree, remains largely responsible for getting us into this mess, in the first place.

But the main subject of this post is “The Mystery of Iniquity” of which St. Paul writes:

2Th 2:1-12  And we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and of our gathering together unto him:  That you be not easily moved from your sense nor be terrified, neither by spirit nor by word nor by epistle. As sent from us, as if the day of the Lord were at hand.

Let no man deceive you by any means: for unless there come a revolt first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition Who opposeth and is lifted up above all that is called God or that is worshipped, so that he sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself as if he were God.

Remember you not that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?  And now you know what withholdeth, that he may be revealed in his time.

For the mystery of iniquity already worketh: only that he who now holdeth do hold, until he be taken out of the way. And then that wicked one shall be revealed: whom the Lord Jesus shall kill with the spirit of his mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: him Whose coming is according to the working of Satan, in all power and signs and lying wonders: And in all seduction of iniquity to them that perish: because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying: That all may be judged who have not believed the truth but have consented to iniquity.

The question (mystery) is: If God is unalterably opposed to certain particular types of evil, then why does he even permit it? Why doesn’t he simply eliminate the people who commit murder, practice sodomy, oppress the poor, and defraud working people of their wages?

One possible answer: If God, according to his own very high standards, chose to withhold his grace and subsequently eliminate all of these things, would there be anyone still left alive on earth?
