Subsidiarity and Scott Brown

… many rightly are asking – if Scott Brown supports abortion, is CatholicVote happy that he was elected? Let me explain.

First, Senator-elect Scott Brown opposes using taxpayer funds for abortion, opposes partial-birth abortion, and supports other laws that would provide parents and women notice, counseling, and information prior to an abortion. But his opponent Martha Coakley was proudly 100% pro-abortion.

Scott Brown is certainly not an ideal candidate. After all, he supports Roe v. Wade! So the question must be asked — how should faithful Catholics, Christians, and dedicated activists that want to build a culture of life respond — how do we fit in?

Do you remember the ‘S’ word?

The ‘s’ word is subsidiarity. And Scott Brown’s win was a victory for subsidiarity – a key principle of Catholic social doctrine, and a foundational principle of American self-government.

The surge that propelled Scott Brown into office was largely a response to Congress’ overreach on health care. Americans of both political parties, and huge numbers of independents elected Scott Brown because of what he represents – a chance to stop the government first “reform” crusade. And because Scott Brown was elected, the health care ‘reform’ debacle may finally be stopped.

The Power of People

Subsidiarity simply means that issues ought to be solved by the smallest and least centralized competent authority. Families, charities, churches and local communities, and even states ought to be the primary instruments of political change — as opposed to a massive bureaucratic centralized federal government.

And thus, while Scott Brown is ultimately wrong about abortion, he is definitely right in urging us to think anew about the proper size and role of government in a free society. And for this reason, CatholicVote is happy he won.

Catholic Abortion Foe Rep. Bart Stupak Defies His Democratic Party on Health Care Bill

MENOMINEE, Mich. — Representative Bart Stupak often endures things others find unbearable. He crisscrosses a Congressional district so vast that some constituents live eight hours apart and so cold that the beer at his beloved football games sometimes freezes. Years ago, as a state trooper, he blew out his knee chasing a suspect, and he has since had so many operations that he now returns to work the same day, toting crutches and ice.

After his younger son committed suicide in 2000, using the congressman’s gun, Mr. Stupak soon resumed his predawn commute to Washington and his solid voting record with the National Rifle Association.

Now he is enduring more hatred than perhaps any other member of Congress, much of it from fellow Democrats. His name has become a slogan: “Stop Stupak!”

Scott Schloegel, his chief of staff, said wearily, “I can’t tell you how many New Yorkers have called me up and yelled at me about this Stupak guy.”

With final negotiations on a health care overhaul beginning this week, complaints about “the evil Stupak amendment,” as the congressman dryly called it over dinner here recently, are likely to grow even louder. The amendment prevents women who receive federal insurance subsidies from buying abortion coverage — but critics assert it could cause women who buy their own insurance difficulty in obtaining coverage.

Mr. Stupak insists that the final bill include his terms, which he says merely reflect current law. If he prevails, he will have won an audacious, counterintuitive victory, forcing a Democratic-controlled Congress to pass a measure that will be hailed as an anti-abortion triumph. If party members do not accept his terms — and many vow they will not — Mr. Stupak is prepared to block passage of the health care overhaul.

Health Care and the “New” AARP

Let me get this straight …

Obama’s health care plan was written by a committee whose Chairman clearly doesn’t understand it. It was passed by a Congress that didn’t read it. If it makes it through the conference committee, it will be signed by a President who openly admits to smoking cigarettes.  The medical aspects of the bill will be reviewed by an obese Surgeon General. It will be financed through a bankrupt government system, by a Treasury Secretary who failed to pay his taxes, using “funny money” borrowed from foreign powers.

What could possibly go wrong?

Seen on the internet: Nancy Pelosi on abortion and free will

Pelosi:

“We are all endowed with a free will and a responsibility to answer for our actions,” she continues. “And that women should have that opportunity to exercise their free will.”

Informed reader’s comment:

She misses the issue ENTIRELY and obviously does not take her Catholic faith seriously enough to think deeply about this issue (or, she’s just plain dumb). Using Speaker Pelosi’s reading, the Catholic Church cannot come out against for example, rape, murder or torture (or, for that matter, sexual abuse of children by Priests or others) because that would impinge upon the ‘free will’ of the rapist, murderer, torturer or abuser.

With abortion, the issue is not “free will”. The issue is whether abortion is murder.

If its murder, how can the Catholic Church, or any religion, leave it up to one’s “free will?”

Republicans and Democrats
December 01st, 2009 | 9:02am

I have tended to vote for Republican candidates, not with any enthusiasm, but because the Democrats have become so toxic. The once “party of the working man” became a collection of race pimps, militant feminists, militant gays, socialists and other assorted freaks. I could not seriously consider voting for Democrats because they had become a carnival side show.

The Republicans under Reagan, were pro life, pro economic opportunity and for a strong national defense [note that a strong national defense and continuous war are not the same thing]. The GOP however, under W Bush became a party that favored corrupt, greedy corporate crooks, constant war, and expansion of Federal Power [No Child Left Behind, expand the “war on drugs”, etc]. W Bush screwed up so very badly, that the toxic Democrats regained both Houses of Congress in 2006, and the White House in 2009.

I wish we had a third party which resembled the platform of Ron Paul, unfortunately, the two major parties have stacked the deck against third parties, so that we are forced to choose between bad and worse. Neither party truly represents us any more. Where do we go from here?

George Weigel on Nancy Pelosi and conscience

The period between Halloween and Christmas will likely tell the tale on health-care reform. The moment to act is now. It will be a dark day in the history of Catholicism in America if the Speaker of the House of Representatives, an “ardently” Catholic woman formed by 16 years of Catholic education, willfully blocks an open vote by the people’s duly elected representatives on federal funding of abortion. Write your member of Congress, urging him or her to support a rule allowing an open, clean, up-or-down vote on the Stupak-Pitts amendment. Write Speaker Pelosi, urging her to let her House colleagues vote their consciences on this grave matter.

Faulty understanding of scripture leads some Jews and Christians to promote abortion

LifeSiteNews

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — A coalition of mainline Protestant churches have authored a letter to members of Congress asking them to make certain the health care bills they are considering contain taxpayer funding for abortions. The letter comes from a group of churches that have long advocated the pro-abortion position.

Under the umbrella of the Religious Institute, the church denominations and more than 1,100 pastors and church staff from the denominations endorsed the letter.

The letter calls abortion a “morally justifiable decision” and opposed any amendments to the House and Senate bills, which current contain massive abortion funding, to strike that taxpayer-financing.

“Already, federal policy unfairly prevents low-income women and federal employees from receiving subsidized [abortions],” Rev. Debra W. Haffner, executive director of the Religious Institute complained.

The letter added that she doesn’t want more abortion funding bans in place and complained that additional “restrictions” on abortion funding constitute a “serious moral injustice.”

The denominations endorsing the letter include the American Baptist Churches, Church of the Brethren, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), United Church of Christ, and the United Methodist Church, and others.

“We affirm women as moral agents who have the capacity, right and responsibility to make the decision as to whether or not abortion is justified in their specific circumstances,” the letter says.

The Jewish Reconstructionist Federation, Unitarian Universalist Association, and United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism also endorsed the pro-abortion letter.

The Religious Institute claims to represent 4,800 clergy and 40 Christian denominations.

Some of the signers to the letter include: Fr. Dr. Luis Barrios, Chair of Latin American and Latina/o Studies, John Jay College of Criminal Justice – CUNY; Rabbi Dan Ehrenkrantz, President, Reconstructionist Rabbinical College; Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder, Bishop, The Fellowship; The Rev. Dr. Paula Gravelle, Chair, Clergy Action Board; and Rev. Dr. Larry Greenfield, Executive Minister, American Baptist Churches of Metro Chicago.

They also include Rabbi Peter Knobel, Former President, Central Conference of American Rabbis; Rev. Dr. Pamela Lightsey, Dean, Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary; Rev. Michael Livingston, Executive Director, International Council of Community Churches; Rev. Dr. Deborah Mullen, Director, Center for African American Ministry and Black Church Studies, McCormick Theological Seminary; Dr. Sylvia Rhue, Interim Executive Director, National Black Justice Coalition; and Rev. Dr. William Stayton, Professor of Sexuality and Religion, Morehouse School of Medicine.

Did President Obama Intentionally Mislead the Holy Father?

benedict3

In the late afternoon of July 10, President Obama met privately with Pope Benedict XVI for just over 30 minutes. According to official Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi, S.J., “The president explicitly expressed his commitment to reducing the numbers of abortions and to listen to the church’s concern on moral issues.”

On July 13 in a Senate committee hearing, Sen. Barbara Mikulski was forced to admit under persistent questioning by Sen. Orrin Hatch that the new health-care bill includes abortion coverage. Planned Parenthood’s Guttmacher Institute estimates government funding of abortion increases abortion by 20 to 35 percent.

There were 1,206,200 abortions in 2006, according to National Right Life (the last annual results available). The math is easy: If the heath-care package currently being pushed by Obama is passed, the result will be 240,000 to 420,000 more abortions in the first year alone.

Huge State Medicaid deficits “Dirty Little Secret” driving Obamacide health bill

fliescall

The “dirty little secret” nobody is mentioning is that a federal, universal health care bill would relieve the states of their obligation to provide (and pay for) medical care for their citizens.

And once a federal bill becomes law, the feds would be able to “cover” health care costs merely by printing more “funny money” … and printing “funny money” is something that individual states simply cannot do.

Of course, medical costs make up a huge portion of the current deficits that most states (like California, Illinois, New York, Michigan, Massachusetts, etc. are currently running.

Why hasn’t anyone in the Obama administration (or Congress) said anything? What are they hiding? What more do they have in store for us, if we let them get away with this?

The Catholic Church vs. Barack Obama the ABORTION President … which one holds an irrational position?

babywomb

Barack Obama, the ABORTION President, recently stated that there could be no common ground between the Catholic Church and his administration on the issues of abortion and embryonic stem cell research; unless and/or until the Catholic Church recognizes that the majority of today’s Catholics … along with the Obama administration … are really on the correct side of things … and that the “institutional” Church is wrong.

The only way to correctly analyze the President’s statement is to do it step by step … “by the numbers”:

Irrational?

The Catholic Church explains that all life comes from God, that due to Christ’s humanity and Christ’s redemptive sacrifice, all human life is sacred, and subsequently, no one (especially government, which is supposed to be a servant and protector of the people, for the common good) has any right to take an innocent life.

This is nothing new, since the Catholic Church has been constantly preaching and teaching the identical message for some 2000 years … a message which … up until the last generation (40 years or so) … has been almost universally accepted … and has served the world extremely well … with the inalienable right to life as a foundational principle of modern Western civilization (not to mention the founding fathers of the United States of America, who thought it right and good to include the mundane term in the Declaration of Independence).

Any violation of this inalienable right to life by anyone, especially against a particular class of persons, is nothing less than blatant discrimination, and a denial of fundamental civil rights, but in the case of abortion … it is unparalleled, government assisted genocide on a scale so massive that is boggles the mind (with over 50 million “surgical” abortions, plus 4 or 5 times as many “silent” abortions due to the use of various artificial contraceptive devices and pills, over a 40 year period.

The “silent” abortions include (among other things) the use of IUD’s which serve to destroy human embryos as they enter the uterus, and the abortifacient action of the birth control pill, which often permits a human embryo to be conceived, only to have it subsequently “starve” to death in a uterus whose lining has been virtually destroyed by the hormones that were used in formulating the contraceptive.

So … many of today’s couples often unknowingly sacrifice the lives of their children for the sake of convenience, while others, when the contraceptives fail, accomplish much the same thing, but at substantially greater personal and financial expense, at local, marginal,  (often government subsidized) abortion facilities.

It should also be noted that oral/patch/similar types of contraceptives as well as induced abortions pose serious health risks to women; blood clots (leading to a quick death) and hemorrhages, (a bit slower, but often just as deadly) respectively.

Furthermore, some 35 years of experience demonstrates that the level of care provided at abortion facilities varies widely, tending to favor the very lowest end of the quality scale, that abortion providers often play “fast and loose” with both medical ethics and the law, and that critical care for the victims of botched abortions is often far away, minimally available, and often too little and too late, since reputable hospitals usually refuse to perform abortions on their premises.

Based on all of this, as well as the basic fact that killing defenseless babies while still inside their own mothers, is a ghastly, monstrous, and wholly inhuman act … with few other parallels in human history … the Catholic Church proclaims that abortion is intrinsically evil in every case, and that absolutely no right to abortion exists … nor can any government legally grant such a right … since the government would then be committing a crime against humanity,  acting contrary to at least 1500 yeas of settled (international) law, and acting directly against the common good (as well as the natural law).

Barack Obama, the Supreme Court, and Abortion Advocates look at things somewhat differently.

In spite of the definitive medical science, which clearly documents that human life begins at conception (the moment the egg cell and the sperm cell unite) abortion advocates insist that it is possible to ignore the realities and redefine the facts, purely for political expediency.

They claim that which is the product of human procreation, which has its’ own unique human DNA, heart beat, brain waves, blood type, and body parts … and which is often able to survive and even thrive outside the womb … and which in every single case, since the beginning of time … has always emerged as human … is not a human being at all … but merely an “undifferentiated blob of cells”.

Barack Obama … the ABORTION President … is on record as claiming that defining  issues of this type are “above his pay grade”.

The U.S. Supreme Court also finds itself completely unable to deal with the question of when life begins, and whether the “fetus” (a Latin term meaning “little child”) is actually human.

One might think that after some 35 years, at least 5 of the 9 justices might have been able to get together and satisfactorily work this out, especially since any supposed “right to abortion” stems solely from the Supreme Court’s inability or unwillingness to define this most essential issue. To make things worse, Congress also seems to be incapable of agreement on the matter.

Most regular folks don’t seem to have that problem.

You probably know that for some time now, we’ve had little robotic machines scouring the planet Mars for signs of life.

I submit that if any evidence resembling a human embryo was discovered on the red planet, that newspaper headlines all around this planet would proclaim nothing less than “Human Life Discovered on Mars”.

It’s about time that our politicians and judges recognized and acknowledged the simple fact that babies in the womb are human, have always been human, and always will be human, and that basic human justice and charity obligates us to protect that innocent human life from all harm, to the best of our ability … NOT kill it.

Neither should we permit women to be routinely abused and traumatized at the hands of abortionists … or anyone else.

Now I ask you: Which position is irrational … that of the Catholic Church … or that of President Barack Obama and the Abortion Advocates?

Heartbeat International’s “Babies Go to Congress” campaign

cherubs

Heartbeat International is a faith-based network of more than 1,000 pregnancy centers around the world, CNSNews.com reports. Affiliate staffers helped bring many women and their children to the Capitol, including Dori Eddols of Columbus, Ohio.

Eddols, now 32, became pregnant when she was 17 and unmarried.

“We were not married and I got pregnant and so we went to a Planned Parenthood because I didn’t know there was a difference between a Planned Parenthood or a pregnancy crisis center,” she said. “I didn’t even know there were crisis pregnancy centers.”

Believing Planned Parenthood would explain her choices, she said she and her then-boyfriend Greg, to whom she has now been married for 15 years, went in to a clinic for a pregnancy test.

Though Eddols expected she would be called back into a room to hear her test results, a staffer came into the lobby and announced that Eddols was pregnant.

“She said, ‘OK you’re pregnant,’ right there in the waiting room,” Eddols told CNSNews.com. “‘When do you want to schedule your abortion?’ I just turned to my boyfriend and said, ‘We gotta get out of here.”

Urge Congress to stop “Drive-Through” Mastectomies!

Breast Cancer Petition. Urge Congress to stop “Drive-Through” Mastectomies!

Something important for you to consider, from a nurse:

“I’ll never forget the look in my patients eyes when I had to tell them they had to go home with the drains, new
exercises and no br east. I remember begging the Doctors to keep these women in The hospital longer, only to hear that they would, but their hands were tied by the insurance companies.

So there I sat with my patients, giving them the instructions they needed to take care of themselves, knowing full well they didn’t grasp half of what I was saying, because the glazed, hopeless, frightened look spoke louder than the quiet ‘Thank You’ they muttered.”

A mastectomy is when a woman’s breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. If you know anyone who has had a Mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterwards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure.

Let’s give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery.

It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important .. Please take the time and do it really quick!

Please send this to everyone in your address book. If there was ever a time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those times.

There’s a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require Insurance Companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It’s about eliminating the ‘drive-through mastectomy’ where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their Web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on.

PLEASE!! Sign the petition by clicking on the link below.
