No Pope should make a habit of offering his spontaneous reflections to the world.

Given the adversarial relation between the Church and the world—it is the height of naiveté to deny it—the Supreme Pontiff must be careful to weigh every word and phrase he chooses to utter in public, for the world will eagerly seize upon any ambiguity or telling omission in order to declare triumphantly that a new breach has appeared in the citadel and that the invasion of the Church by worldly thinking has made a stunning new advance. Thus a Pope’s pursuit of “simplicity” and “sincerity,” if it leads to the idea that the Pope must shun all formalism in his public addresses and “speak from the heart,” can come—inevitably will come—at the expense of all the faithful and at the risk of undermining the very credibility of the Church herself.

Editor’s note: We’ve all heard the phrase, “The devil’s in the details.” It is also equally true that lack of detail might also serve evil purposes. When a pope makes vague, open-ended statements in public, he incites both scandal and dismay – while at the same time, reinvigorating the enemies of the church – who twist his imprecise language to their own nefarious ends.

“The federation of godless error.”

“The federation of godless error” is a phrase as appropriate for the twenty-first century as for the first. If it has a modern ring to it, it’s because error, the most boring of all things, hasn’t changed in twenty centuries. For any doctrinal errors you find today, you’ll find analogues or even exact matches during the years following the death of John the Evangelist, the last survivor of the apostles (and the only one who died of old age rather than of martyrdom).

One difference between now and then is that many enemies of today’s Church don’t choose to lurk in obscure darkness. They prefer to bathe in the lights of the cameras. They aren’t so much interested in countering the teachings of the Church, which they dismiss as passé, as in promoting their own pet theories. In ancient times they would have been lumped among the Gnostics, those who claimed secret knowledge.

Study: Homosexual priests and clueless bishops were the primary cause of the abuse scandal.

Abstract: Due to clergy sex abuse scandals centered primarily in the Northern hemisphere, the moral authority of the Roman Catholic Church has been subjected to an opportunistic siege by prominent individuals and organizations who see the chance to advance their goals, including the ordination of women and the suspension of the requirement for priestly celibacy.

There is also a strongly defensive element to this strategy. Opponents of the Church know that there is a well-documented and strong correlation between male homosexuality and child sexual abuse, but claim that there is no evidence supporting this connection.

And, of course, those who are currently attacking the Church hope that they can undermine its moral authority to preach on the sinfulness of homosexual behavior and weaken its opposition to ersatz homosexual “marriage.”

This paper demonstrates that there is indeed a very strong link between male homosexuality and child sexual abuse. It also shows that there is a similar rate of child sexual abuse among other very large groups of adult males (e.g., Protestant clergy, who are usually married), thus proving that celibacy is not the root of the problem — homosexuality is.
