Amazing story: “Catechist to the Incarcerated” finally released after 25 years of unjust confinement.

While in prison–and this is the big lesson for me–Ford made impressive use of his unjustly mandated solitude. He wrote articles for Catholic publications, co-founded the Alabama prison system’s GED program and founded the Killian Mooney Catechetical Institute, earned a business degree, helped facilitate an anger management course for inmates, and is the only Alabama convict to to have  published a book,The Missionary’s Catechism. Oh, and over 100 convicts entered the Catholic Church under his mentorship.

Did you know Saint Luke was also a medical doctor and artist?

Saint Luke the Evangelist

Luke was St Paul’s beloved companion on many journeys, physician and evangelist, to whom we owe some of our most beautiful memories of Jesus and his mother.

He was born in Antioch – today’s Antakya, in Turkey – which was then the capital of the Roman province of Syria and the second city of the empire. He was a doctor by profession, and accompanied Paul on his second missionary journey into Greece. Being highly educated, Luke wrote polished, elegant Greek, and related the events he wrote about to contemporary history.

Rest In Peace AndyP/Doria2 – a most remarkable Catholic evangelist, teacher, writer, dedicated family man … and friend.

Andrew P. Piacente
1953 – 2012

Andrea Pasquale Primo Piacente, age 58, of Yonkers died Wednesday, September 5, 2012. Andrew was born October 26, 1953, at sea, on the Italian Ocean Liner, Andrea Doria, the son of the late Pietro and Alfa (Pensa) Piacente. He was employed as a mail handler for the US Postal Service since1977. Andrew became a steward in 1979, and held various positions and performed various functions for the union during his long career, also serving as the AVP/Branch President of Westchester. He also served as the New York State Executive Board member up until his retirement in August 2012.

Andrew was a parishioner and CCD teacher at St. Eugene’s Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife Marie L. (Kanych) Piacente, his loving children Christina (Paul) Dedvukaj, Andrew (Andrea) Piacente and Adam Piacente. Devoted son of Alfa Piacente and brother of George Piacente. Cherished grandfather of Angelina and Dominic.

What isn’t mentioned in his “official” bio are the thousands of comments and letters to the editors that Andy sent to various websites and newspapers, where he never failed to express God’s honest truth about all things Catholic.

There’s also no mention of the thousands of people … Catholic and non-Catholic alike … whose lives Andy regularly touched, via email.

You see, every week, Andy would read and carefully screen hundreds of faith-related Internet articles. Many of his friends would send him their favorite picks, as well. Then, two … three … sometimes four times a week … Andy would send links to the best of those articles … along with a short personal commentary … to followers located all around the world.

This was Andy’s very own, home-grown, Catholic Information Ministry, and it’s just the type of thing the late, Blessed Pope John Paul II, as well as our current Pope Benedict XVI had in mind for their “New Evangelization”.

A quick search of the Eternal Word Television Network Q&A Forums will reveal hundreds of questions and comments from AndyP/Doria2 … as his on-line friends knew him.

Andy was also a frequent commenter and contributor to Cardinal Dolan’s Blog, and to my own, where I set up a special category, just for Andy. You can read over 200 of his hand-picked selections here.

Andy’s words and deeds defined the true meaning of the term “Church Militant” in an era where you won’t even find it mentioned in the the Catholic Catechism.

One particular Old Testament passage succinctly explains the reason for Andy’s particular mission:

My people have been silent, because they had no knowledge:
because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will reject thee,
that thou shalt not do the office of priesthood to me:
and thou hast forgotten the law of thy God,
I also will forget thy children.

(Hosea 4:6)

Andy never pushed his weight around, and as far as  I know, he never offended a soul. But Andy always managed to promote and defend the Catholic faith … and stand up for the truth … in good times and bad … with style and with grace. And Lord knows … there’s not much of that going around, these days!

The liver cancer that prematurely ended his life has left a big hole in the lives of Andy’s family, friends and many followers. I know I’ll miss him. But my Catholic faith informs me that it won’t be too long before we see him again. So for now, please join me in praying one Hail Mary for the repose of the soul of Andrea Pasquale Primo Piacente a.k.a. AndyP/Doria2 … a thoroughly nice guy, a hard worker, and a good, faithful Catholic family man … who was taken from us much to soon.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of they womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Rest in the Peace of Jesus Christ, brother!

The Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

On June 28, Pope Benedict officially recognized Archbishop Sheen as someone who had lived a life of “heroic virtue,” and declared him “Venerable.” The devout priest from Peoria who became the first televangelist, commanded a weekly audience of 30 million, and appeared on the cover of Time, is now just one step away from beatification, and a second from sainthood, pending two respective miracles. The Vatican is already studying the case of a stillborn child who—having shown no vital signs for 60 minutes—astonishingly came back to life, after his mother prayed for the Archbishop’s intercession.

The advance of Sheen’s cause has elated his many supporters, especially three priests who’ve had a special devotion to it.

Monsignor Hilary Franco, who served as the Archbishop’s assistant when he headed the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in America—and is the only surviving member of his New York household—told me how thankful he was for the announcement: “I am a living witness to Archbishop Sheen’s holiness.”

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen: Catholic Media’s Greatest Star

By Thomas Reeves

When Sheen went on television in February 1952, his Life Is Worth Living programs became extremely popular, competing effectively against shows starring “Mr. Television,” Milton Berle, and singer-actor Frank Sinatra.

As 1999 ended, there was speculation about who had been the greatest, most popular, most significant, or most influential Catholic of the preceding 100 years. When it came to the world, Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa scored high on virtually every list. In the United States, names such as Francis Cardinal Spellman, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, Al Smith, and John F. Kennedy received considerable attention. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen received little notice.

It is my contention that Sheen was the most influential Catholic of 20th-century America. Indeed, it could be argued that his impact was far superior to others receiving more attention in polls and in the media.

In the first place, he was the most popular public speaker in the Church, and arguably the best. Millions listened to his Catholic Hour radio programs from 1928 to 1952. Millions also received printed copies of these talks. In 1949, Gladys Baker, a noted journalist, observed that Sheen was “the name priest in America.” She added, “By members of all faiths, Monsignor Sheen is conceded to be the most electric orator of our times.”

When Sheen went on television in February 1952, his Life Is Worth Living programs became extremely popular, competing effectively against shows starring “Mr. Television,” Milton Berle, and singer-actor Frank Sinatra. A television critic exclaimed, “Bishop Sheen can’t sing, can’t dance, and can’t act. All he is…is sensational.” In his first year on television, Sheen won the Emmy for Most Outstanding Television Personality, winning over media giants Lucille Ball, Arthur Godfrey, Edward R. Murrow, and Jimmy Durante. After winning, he was featured on the covers of Time, TV Guide, Colliers, and Look. The journalist James Conniff stated, “No Catholic bishop has burst on the world with such power as Sheen wields since long before the Protestant Reformation.” By early 1955, his programs were reaching 5.5 million households a week.

The Classic Haydock Bible Commentary on the Book of Revelation

St. John the Apostle and Evangelist – Symbol: Eagle

It is certain much the greater part of the ancient fathers acknowledged both that it was a part of the canon, and that it was written by St. John, the apostle and evangelist. See Tillemont, in his ninth note upon St. John, where he cites St. Justin Martyr, St. Irenæus, St. Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius., Eusebius, St. Ambrose, St. Jerome, St. Augustine, &c.

It was written in Greek to the churches in Asia[Asia Minor], under Domitian, about the year 96[A.D. 96] or 97, long after the destruction of Jerusalem, when St. John was banished to the island of Patmos, in the Ægean Sea.

It is by some called the prophecy of the New Testament, and the accomplishment of the predictions of all the other prophets, by the first coming of Christ at his incarnation, and by his second coming at the end of the world.

As to the time when the chief predictions should come to pass, we have no certainty, as appears by the different opinions, both of the ancient fathers, and late interpreters. Many think that most things set down from the fourth chapter to the end, will not be fulfilled till a little time before the end of the world. Others are of an opinion, that a great part of them, and particularly the fall of the wicked Babylon, happened at the destruction of paganism, by the destruction of heathen Rome, and its persecuting heathen emperors.

Outspoken Catholic priest is now radical Islam’s “Public Enemy #1”

Just when it seems there is no hope we have this former Muslim
who was exiled from his homeland in Egypt
because he became a Christian.

While in hiding, he started a clandestine, satellite radio show,
which now reaches over 50,000,000
(yes, FIFTY MILLION) Muslim ears everyday.

As a result, Al Qaida has  placed a $60,000,000
bounty on the head of Fr. Zakaria Boutros.

We will NEVER see or hear this on any of our airwaves.
We must do it ourselves, through the Net.
