(Satan afflicting Job)

Today’s Question: Why are some people possessed by evil spirits when they wear crosses, drink holy water, go to church and have guardian angels?

Answer: Some people have a difficult time discerning the will of God, so they continually get themselves into bad spots.

Some suffer from generational curses, or similar curses/attacks, due to engaging in ill-advised activities/lifestyle choices/addictive behaviors.

Others might be temporarily or permanently oppressed by demon spirits, who are more powerful than their assigned, guardian angel.

Some are simply, “victims of circumstance” whose spiritual afflictions are due to mysterious causes, that may never be fully understood or explained.

All the more reason for a “belt and suspenders” approach to personal holiness – a regular, personal program of prayer and study, combined with a lifetime of full, faithful participation in all the work, worship, sacraments and devotions of the Holy Catholic Church.

Jesus ultimately defeated Satan through his death and Resurrection and then sent the power of the Holy Spirit to his Apostles at Pentecost.

“When God looks down, he sees Jesus in you,” Mgr Esseff said. “You have that power as baptised, confirmed Christians. And so when he [Satan] sees you, he hates what you would discover about that power that is within you.”

He suggested that each audience member had been tempted that day because temptation was the ordinary activity of the devil.

“Your soul is a battlefield because there is also someone who hates you,” he said. “That one is the devil. The devil knows who you are and what you have. God passed him by. God did not choose to become one of the angels. God chose to be one like us.”

Infestations by the devil

Fallen angels, also known as devils and evil spirits, try to hinder all of us in our pursuit of holiness. Their ordinary ploy is by means of temptations, which God allows so that we can make good use of our freedom in resisting them and thus growing to fuller maturity in Christ.

In addition to these ordinary ploys, demons resort to other extraordinary acts, on rare occasions, with the same intention of thwarting the plan of God and undercutting our filial trust in Him. These harassments can be of three kinds: infestations, obsessions and possessions.

With infestations, the devil makes use of noises, outcries, rattling, apparitions and other extraordinary outbursts of some sensible nature aimed at terrifying people, intending to undercut their confidence in God.
