Joliet Catholic Charities puts brakes on adoptions as civil unions begin

A letter from Catholic Charities in Joliet to the state does not mention the civil unions but does address the issue of same-sex couples.

“It is the religious practice of Catholic Charities not to place children with unmarried, cohabiting couples, whether same sex or opposite sex,” says the letter from Glenn Van Cura, executive director of Catholic Charities in Joliet.

Catholic Charities in Rockford quits adoption and foster care services due to IL civil unions law

“While we understand leaving this work will be very painful for our client families, employees, volunteers, donors and prayerful supporters, we can no longer contract with the state of Illinois whose laws would force us to participate in activity offensive to the moral teachings of the church — teachings which compel us to do this work in the first place,” said Frank Vonch, director of social services for the Diocese of Rockford, which includes Kane and McHenry counties.
