On a number of economic issues, Pope Francis is said to be “to the left of Nancy Pelosi.”

But as an economic mission statement, Evangelii Gaudium places the pope — as Vatican watcher Rev. Thomas Reese predicted in March — “to the left of Nancy Pelosi.” In his decidedly populist document, Pope Francis specifically criticizes the economic “trickle-down theories” that were the beating heart of Ronald Reagan’s anti-tax, anti-regulation revolution.

The part of the document that is grabbing most of the attention starts with Section 53, in the chapter on “the crisis of communal commitment.” With his caveat that “it is not the task of the Pope to offer a detailed and complete analysis of contemporary reality,” Francis begins his economic critique like this:

Just as the commandment “Thou shalt not kill” sets a clear limit in order to safeguard the value of human life, today we also have to say “thou shalt not” to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills. How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points? [Evangelii Gaudium]

Editor’s note: The Pope can be as liberal as he wants to, with his own money! The problem with liberals in the United States (and elsewhere) is they like to be liberal with other people’s money!

The grievous abuse begins when liberals (typically Democrats) gain control of public funding – especially Federal funding – because only the Federal Government has the power to print money – or to borrow – big time – from other countries, who also print their own money.

As for Republicans – they’re just slightly less abusive with other people’s money than are Democrats.

The Spirit of Corruption and Greed is no respecter of race, creed, or party affiliation!

Pope Francis: “You can not serve God and money.”

Vatican City ( AsiaNews) – ” You can not serve God and money “, ” greed , in fact, is the root of all evil “, “it corrupts” and “its power is so great, it can make you deviate from [the path of ] faith”, it even “robs you of faith, it weakens it and you lose it”. And when one does something for money that countermands the first commandment, he or she “is guilty of idolatry.”

Editor’s note: I applaud Pope Francis for his clarity on this matter. Just one question … why do we have many of our bishops running dioceses with assets running into the hundreds of millions of dollars? Wouldn’t the Church be better off with more bishops – in much smaller dioceses – in charge of fewer hard assets?

The danger of subscribing to the falacious “prosperity” Gospel

Greed is often downplayed today where accumulation and ostentatious display of wealth is often celebrated.  Great rooms with cathedral ceilings, 72″ flat screen TVs and even private home theaters (entertainment centers), fancy cars etc., are shamelessly flaunted.

But greed is at the root of a lot of evils and suffering. Scripture says,

For we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world; but if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs. (1 Tim 6:7-10)

Obama is a Gift from God

How is Obama a gift from God? Look at it this way. We get what we deserve. The American people voted for Obama. They did so for a complex net of reasons, but when they are all summed up, we chose him. I’m in a hurry this morning, and it would take a very long post to analyze all those complex reasons, but the fact of the matter he is our president and everything is a gift from God.

What interests me is how, looking at history, the bad stuff that happens is also a gift from God because it is his judgement on the human race. This is the message of the Old Testament prophets and the message of the Old Testament to our society today. Read the Old Testament. Understand the prophets. Read the history. See what happened.

The people turn away from God. They turn to their own lust, their own greed, their own cruelty. The drift into complacency and despair and decadence and then they are swept away. Doomsday. Judgement, and all that is a gift of God just as much as the prosperity and peace and goodness and happiness that comes when a person or a nation obeys God and follows his rule book.

St. Francis of Assisi: A saint for our times

St Francis lived as one of the poorest and lowest in society, and worked as a day labourer. This was hard, menial, low-paid work, yet he never passed a collection plate when he preached, nor asked the public for money.

His life and message were uncompromising and simple: greed causes suffering for both the victims and the perpetrators.

Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, Rob Blagojevich and the best Senate Money Can Buy

Former Illinois Governor Rob Blagojevich was summarily arrested when government wire taps revealed the possibility that he was attempting to “sell” Barack Obama’s open Senate seat to the “highest bidder”.

It looks like at least two (and probably a good deal more) Senate seats were summarily sold this very weekend in Washington, D.C., and nobody seems to be doing anything about it.

Where’s the U.S . Attorney when we really need him?
