Gay Marriage and the End of Christian Civilization

Back in the 90s when Fr. Paul Marx, founder of HLI, was asked his opinion about the efforts to legalize “same-sex unions” he commented in his usual forthright fashion, “When they do that,” he said, “it’s the end.” He meant “the end” of the Christian civilization whose values used to form the basis of American common life. Fr. Marx, in a prophetic sense, saw rightly that a society cannot survive the perverse manipulation of the very structure of reality that God Himself has revealed to us, one very fundamental element of which is the institution of marriage. When we allow that to be changed – “It’s the end.”

In 2009, 52% of the voting population in California endorsed Proposition 8 which ratified the constitutional protection of marriage as between a man and a woman. One might argue that even 52% was shockingly low on something so important, but the people won that battle despite the veritable war of the homosexual militants to sink that Proposition. In fact, Christian decency won and the structure of reality stayed intact, at least in this aspect of law in California, until this week when a single judge just nullified 7 million votes and the will of the people and lifted the “ban” on gay marriage. There was rejoicing in Sodom on the Bay, but how sad for our nation and even for our poor, misguided world that will weaken in its opposition to the homosexual lifestyle as a result of this decision.

So why, you ask, is gay marriage wrong? Let me count the ways.

First and foremost is because it violates the revealed Will of God as seen in Scripture. There are few things as clear in God’s revelation as the sacred institution of marriage between a man and a woman. From Genesis 1 (the marriage of Adam and Eve) to Revelation 21 (the marriage of Christ the Lamb with His Bride the Church) God has had only one model of marriage, and it is not gay marriage. Even polygamy and divorce was done away with in the Christian Church, as Our Lord reminded all of the essence of marriage as it was “in the beginning.” This Christian view of marriage became the norm of Western society and its most basic societal unit, undoubtedly allowing the West to flourish.

A close second to this is that gay marriage distorts the very concept of parenting as well as marriage. Even if you overlook the fact that gay marriage is by definition sterile, every child of a gay marriage has to be adopted or artificially inseminated, and that in itself is a violation of the whole concept of family. In the 80s, the Vatican actually said that the adoption of children by homosexuals “does violence” to the child. Pretty strong language, but true nonetheless. In its simplest terms, kids need a mom and a dad, and are forever stigmatized by being the child of a gay marriage. Kids model their lives, their concept of family, their morals and oftentimes their whole worldview on their parents’ attitudes and values. These kids get a totally distorted view of all these basics.

Third but by no means the last reason, all of society suffers because of the public endorsement of an intrinsically disordered lifestyle and practice. Yes, “disordered” is what our Church calls both the homosexual orientation and lifestyle, and gay marriage simply ratifies that disorder on a social level. In recent debates, the term “human right” to describe gay marriage and the charge that anyone who stands against it is guilty of “discrimination” are examples of these fundamental distortions. Fr. Marx was right: a society cannot long survive this kind of violence done to its basic values, and history surely shows many societies like Ancient Greece, whose rapid decline was preceded by the proliferation of the gay lifestyle and its public acceptance.

While we respect all people as they are, we don’t have to respect such a wholesale assault on everything that is sacred to us and good for our society; no, in fact, we must fight against it with our very lives. The question is not whether or not we can win the battle; the question is whether we will join it. Will we accept the challenge to defend the sacred or not? We are called to be faithful and obedient to the Plan of God for our world, and within that, God will bring forth the victory. There is no doubt that, if it is not already there, gay marriage will be coming to your state soon. If we don’t fight it, our souls, our families and basically, our very civilization, will find themselves at “the end” of the line in very short order.

Human Life International’s Statement on the Passing of Senator Edward Kennedy

Human Life International’s Statement on the Passing of Senator Edward Kennedy

We must, as a matter of precept, pray for the salvation of heretical Catholics like Senator Edward Kennedy, but we do not have to praise him let alone extol him with the full honors of a public Catholic funeral and all the adulation that attends such an event. There was very little about Ted Kennedy’s life that deserves admiration from a spiritual or moral point of view. He was probably the worst example of a Catholic statesman that one can think of. When all is said and done, he has distorted the concept of what it means to be a Catholic in public life more than anyone else in leadership today.

Obviously we don’t know the state of Senator Edward Kennedy’s soul upon death. We don’t pretend to. We are told by the family that he had the opportunity to confess his sins before a priest, and his priest has said publicly he was “at peace” when he died. For that we are grateful. But it is one thing to confess one’s sins and for these matters to be kept, rightfully, private. It is another thing entirely for one who so consistently and publicly advocated for the destruction of unborn human beings to depart the stage without a public repudiation of these views, a public confession, as it were.

It is up to God to judge Senator Kennedy’s soul. We, as rational persons, must judge his actions, and his actions were not at all in line with one who values and carefully applies Church teaching on weighty matters. Ted Kennedy’s positions on a variety of issues have been a grave scandal for decades, and to honor this “catholic” champion of the culture of death with a Catholic funeral is unjust to those who have actually paid the price of fidelity. We now find out that President Obama will eulogize the Senator at his funeral, an indignity which, following on the heels of the Notre Dame fiasco, leaves faithful Catholics feeling sullied, desecrated and dehumanized by men who seem to look for opportunities to slap the Church in the face and do so with impunity simply because they have positions of power.

It is not enough for Kennedy to have been a “great guy behind the scenes” as we have seen him referred to even by his political opponents. It is also not praiseworthy to put a Catholic rhetorical veneer on his leftist politics that did nothing to advance true justice as the Church sees it or to advance the peace of Christ in this world. Every indication of Senator Kennedy’s career, every public appearance, every sound bite showed an acerbic, divisive and partisan political hack for whom party politics were much more infallible than Church doctrines. Whatever one’s political affiliation, if one is only “Catholic” to the extent that his faith rhymes with his party line, then his Catholicism is a fraud.

As the Scriptures remind us, there is a time for everything under the sun. This, now, is the time for honesty about our Faith and about those who are called to express it in the public forum. If we do not remind ourselves of the necessity of public confession for public sins such as Senator Kennedy was guilty of, then we are negligent in our embrace of the Faith and we are part of the problem. As Pope Benedict has reminded us recently, charity without truth can easily become mere sentimentality, and we must not fall into that error. A Catholic show of charity for the family must not eclipse the truth that is required of all with eyes to see and ears to hear.

Senator Kennedy needs to be sent to the afterlife with a private, family-only funeral and the prayers of the Church for the salvation of his immortal soul. He will not be missed by the unborn who he betrayed time and time again, nor by the rest of us who are laboring to undo the scandalous example of Catholicism that he gave to three generations of Americans.

Why a Pledge on Humanae Vitae?

Why a Pledge on Humanae Vitae?

To [Christian married couples] the Lord entrusts the task of making visible to men the holiness and sweetness of the law which unites the mutual love of husband and wife with their cooperation with the love of God the author of human life. [Pope Paul VI, Humanae vitae, ¶25].

It may seem odd to take a pledge to do what we are supposed to do anyway – follow the teachings of the Church. By our baptism and confirmation we are already vowed, at least implicitly, to do so. But we are living under special circumstances in a secular society where many Catholics have, knowingly or unknowingly supplanted their faith with another code by which they live, deeming it more “realistic.” But nothing is more realistic or “practical” than eternal salvation and living this life in accord with God’s designs.

So why do we pledge to assent to something as beautiful as God’s natural designs? Something, which in a less darkened world that ought to go without saying? For two reasons, at least: First, as an act of reparation for forty years of public dissent that led so many people astray by treating this ignorance of our Church as some kind of “enlightenment” or “liberation.” Second as an act of witness and assent to counter the anti-witness of this dissent, which brought so much incalculable damage to our Church and world, and indeed the witness of the Church.

We stand up as confessors of the Faith. In the ancient Church, after the great martyrdoms ceased, those who stood for the Faith in a hostile climate were known as confessors of the Faith.

In taking this pledge we stand with the martyrs and confessors of the past in giving public witness not only to the Truth of our Church but her beauty.

Human Life International has an ongoing campaign of collecting this Pledge from clergy members and seminarians. This week we announce and offer a similar pledge to members of the lay faithful.

To sign the Pledge electronically, click here. To download a pdf copy of the Pledge to sign and distribute to others to sign please go here: [Laity Pledge in PDF]

We recommend pastors include it as a bulletin insert and lay people distribute it among friends and family.

Clergy Pledge of Assent to Humanae Vitae

Dear HLI friends and readers of Spirit and Life®,

I am happy to send you our “Clergy Pledge of Assent” to the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae which we are trying to get into the hands of as many priests as possible this summer. I would personally appreciate if you could print out the version of it provided in this email and show it to priests, permanent deacons and seminarians and encourage them to sign it and send it to HLI. Note, first of all, that we have already sent this to our email list of priests who signed up for the “Humanae Vitae Priests” newsletter so there is no need for you to give it to those already on our list. However, you can encourage them to sign it online if that is easier! (See www.humanaevitaepriests.org.)

When I wrote to the clergy I told them that “it is HLI’s desire and purpose to tell the world that we will not be silent about this encyclical or its teaching. Nor will we stand by idly when Pope Paul VI’s predictions of cultural and spiritual degradation are manifesting themselves around us in broken marriages, devastated families and pernicious immorality.” Whereas there was a whole generation of clerical silence and dissent to this most critical of all papal encyclicals, we will be the clerical generation of assent. We believe that the Catholic clergy has a large part to play in turning this situation around, and only a full promotion of the teachings of this encyclical by the clergy will be a force for change in our present culture of death.

We need you to help us get the word out to the clergy and seminarians. We are particularly interested in raising awareness of this campaign in the next month before the actual 40th anniversary of the encyclical (July 25th), but we will be collecting signatures of bishops, priests, deacons and seminarians for the whole year.

Oh, and by the way, be prepared for a Laity version of the Humanae vitae pledge to come your way too! We, the generation of assent to Humanae vitae, will let our voices be heard!

Nuclear Reaction to HLI Ad in Africa!

Nuclear Reaction to HLI Ad in Africa!
My Dear Friends,

I want to tell you about a most amazing project that HLI has initiated … and then I need your immediate help so HLI can spread this truly life-saving program all over Africa!

First, let me tell you about the project. Last week we got the attention of those who promote “King Condom” in Tanzania (East Africa) … big time! We did so when our HLI affiliate erected three billboards that featured a skeleton on a bright red background as the attention-grabber (image courtesy of American Life League) and used this title – written in Swahili so that the local population could read it – to drive home the truth about condom failure: “Faithful Condom User”
[click here to see a picture of the billboard].

One large billboard was placed near a main road in the capital city of Dar es Salaam while two smaller versions were put up elsewhere in the city.

While we presumed that this message and graphic would be controversial, we didn’t expect the international condom lobby to go utterly ballistic over it!

On Tuesday, the main newspaper in Tanzania, The Citizen, ran a story on our billboards. The article described people at “high-profile” anti-life organizations like United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, Family Health International, Population Services International and others as “up in arms” … and government officials as “jolted.” It said that the chairperson of the Tanzania Commission for AIDS was “furious” at HLI’s billboards and told of meetings that were held with members of the Prime Minister’s office to discuss an “urgent intervention” to suppress and censor our message!

When the power structure of an entire country is rallied against us, that’s a sure sign that we’re right!

Our billboards are telling the people the TRUTH about condoms … and the heralds of the culture of death can’t stand it!

Now that you see the impact our billboards are having, I need you to send HLI the largest gift you can so we can spread this program to every one of the 55 nations on the continent of Africa!

The cost to do so is prohibitive … $6,000 per country (that’s how much we sent Emil Hagamu, our man in Tanzania, to erect the three billboards) … times 55 countries … equals $330,000! That money will enable HLI to erect three billboards in each country.

Although I’d dearly love to raise all $330,000 today, I’m not counting on that. So my short-term goal is to raise $24,000 so we can put up billboards in Kenya and Cameroon (the next two countries on our list) … and get billboards in the works for two more countries. Our affiliates are already working on the logistics.

I’m also frantically working to recruit 25,000 PRAYER WARRIORS who will help get the ball rolling by hitting their knees and praying for the success of this project.

To succeed, I need your help today … RIGHT NOW in fact! Specifically:

  1. Send HLI the largest donation you can out of the generosity of your heart!
  2. Pray the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel for the protection of our HLI affiliate in Tanzania from any retaliation … one of the billboards has been vandalized and legal action has been threatened … including jail time!

Both your money and your prayers are needed NOW … and both are deeply appreciated!

Spreading HLI’s counter-cultural message of abstinence and fidelity will literally de-fang the AIDS monster, de-throne “King Condom”, and give the people of Africa a fighting chance to take back their society and their pro-life culture from the powerful international anti-life lobby that seeks to impose its failed method of stopping the spread of AIDS.

Just click here and follow the instructions to send your contribution.
