Scandalous prophecy come true: “Someone else will end up owning the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.”

About this story

This series is based on nearly 23,000 pages of internal documents from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and various religious orders that were made public this year in compliance with court orders. In addition, (LA) Times reporters reviewed thousands of pages of depositions and court filings and interviewed dozens of people, including church officials, victims’ families and law enforcement officials. Cardinal Roger Mahony declined to be interviewed or respond to questions sent to his attorney.

Unless otherwise stated, and excepting historical and biographical information from Times archives, all information in the story is based on internal church records released through court order or sworn depositions. Statements that appear within quotation marks are from depositions, church records, public statements, interviews and contemporaneous coverage in the Los Angeles Times. Some comments and conversations have been paraphrased based on the recollections of participants; in those instances, quotation marks are not used.

Text, photographs – and many ugly details

Editor’s note: An estimated $2.6 billion (probably much more) has so far, been spent by the Catholic Church on legal defense and damage awards, throughout the United States.

The scope of the problem is so widespread, that when similar problems occur in non-Catholic religious groups, they look to see how much the Catholic Church paid out.

The “going rate” for a typical settlement now stands at around $2.5 million per person/per case.

Curiously, when similar issues crop up in public schools, teachers still get transferred around and awards for money damages rarely follow. But even when they do, things are usually covered up and the dollar amounts are much, much smaller. So, there is one standard that applies to Catholics and another standard, for everyone else.

The whole thing stinks, to the high heavens!

Army tells soldiers that evangelical Christians and members of the Tea Party were a threat to the nation and that any soldier donating to those groups would be subjected to punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

A soldier who attended the Oct. 17th briefing told me the counter-intelligence agent in charge of the meeting spent nearly a half hour discussing how evangelical Christians and groups like the American Family Association were “tearing the country apart.”

Michael Berry, an attorney with the Liberty Institute, is advising the soldier and has launched an investigation into the incident.

“The American public should be outraged that the U.S. Army is teaching our troops that evangelical Christians and Tea Party members are enemies of America, and that they can be punished for supporting or participating in those groups,” said Berry, a former Marine Corps JAG officer.

Father Z comments: When heresy gives you (Archbishop) Sartain, make lemonade!

sartain3

Archbp. Sartain of Seattle was appointed by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to keep his eyes on the doings of the sisters. (Ed: The notorious and often heretical Leadership Council of Women Religious – LCWR.)

One former LCWR president said its members are preparing for this year’s assembly with an “ominous feeling.”

“We’re going into this assembly knowing that there’s a cloud over our head and that we are being investigated and they are going to be monitoring us,” said Mercy Sr. Theresa Kane, who served as LCWR president from 1979 to 1980.

Editor’s note: Archbishop J. Peter Sartain (pronounced “Sarten)”) is a fair man, a good bishop and an all-around nice fellow. The sisters should be pleased to have him in attendance – unless they again plan to blatantly and publicly spout heresy. That could turn out to be a problem – unless perhaps, our new Pope – who has already advised similar groups not to worry about such trivial matters – also decides to attend!

Editor’s note: The liberal hierarchy of the post-Vatican II Catholic Church has been falling all over itself in support of various United Nations programs and initiatives, since the 1960’s. It may now be the time to give the devil his due. Lets’ see how Pope Francis handles this one.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s investigation determines Obama birth certificate is a fake.

Mike Zullo, the posse’s chief investigator, said numeric codes on certain parts of the birth certificate indicate that those parts weren’t filled out, yet those sections asking for the race of Obama’s father and his field of work or study were completed.

Zullo said investigators previously didn’t know the meaning of codes but they were explained by a 95-year-old former state worker who signed the president’s birth certificate. Zullo said a writer who published a book about Obama’s birth certificate and was aiding investigators let them listen in on an interview he conducted of the former state worker.

The Obama campaign declined to comment on Arpaio’s allegations.

The leadership of the Girl Scouts is reflexively liberal. Their board is dominated by people whose views are antithetical to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

According to a Visiting Fellow in Catholic studies at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, Mary Rice Hasson, GS-USA has not been responsive to its critics and has been “whitewashing” programs and policies that contradict church teaching. Hasson said:

They just repeated the Girl Scouts’ denials. Families’ concerns were minimized or ignored.

A collision course is probably a good description of where things are headed. The leadership of the Girl Scouts is reflexively liberal. Their board is dominated by people whose views are antithetical to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

GS-USA argues that the concerns raised by Catholic critics are recycled complaints that GS-USA has denied repeatedly and categorically.
