New Illinois Civil Unions law means Guardian Angel Orphanage will no longer be run by Catholic Sisters of St. Francis

Guardian Angel never had a case of a homosexual couple seeking a foster child, Schmitz said. But, “We’ve been following very closely what’s been happening with Catholic Charities. We were a Catholic organization. We had to abide with the teaching of the Catholic Church, which has become an issue with us.”

State authorities had not notified Guardian Angel that it could be next. But the governing board at Guardian Angel, which until last week included sisters from the order that founded the organization, could see what was likely coming.

“Looking at what was happening and what was going on around the state, it had to be looked at,” said Nan Nagl, a spokesman for the sisters.
