Report from France: Lourdes famous grotto now looks like a vision of “the apocalypse”.

Chapels and the bathing pools filled with water that pilgrims believe has curative powers lie in ruins after being overrun by fierce floodwaters that thundered through the town. Only the Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception has escaped unscathed.

Woman killed as flash flooding hits Lourdes

Flash floods in south-western France have killed an elderly woman as the inundated grotto at the Catholic pilgrimage site of Lourdes remains closed for a second day.

The woman in her 70s was washed away overnight by the floodwaters after getting out of her submerged car at Saint Beat near Lourdes, the local prefecture said.

Prophetic event? Marian Shrine at Lourdes, France is inundated by flood waters.

Rescue teams helped hundreds of pilgrims escape waterlogged hotels on Saturday after heavy rains led the Gave River to overrun its banks — and even wash up into the town’s famed grotto, where many Catholics believe the Virgin Mary appeared to a 14-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous in 1858.

Therefore, rejoice, O heavens, and you that dwell therein. Woe to the earth and to the sea, because the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, knowing that he hath but a short time. And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman who brought forth the man child. And there were given to the woman two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the desert, unto her place, where she is nourished for a time and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

And the serpent cast out of his mouth, after the woman, water, as it were a river: that he might cause her to be carried away by the river. And the earth helped the woman: and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the river which the dragon cast out of his mouth. And the dragon was angry against the woman: and went to make war with the rest of her seed, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Revelation 12:12-17)

68th miracle of Lourdes is officially recognised

Apparition at Lourdes, France

The case of a nun who started walking after being paralysed for years has become the 68th miracle to be recognised at the French shrine of Lourdes.  The priest at Traverso’s diocese of Casale Monferrato officially recognised it as a miracle at a Mass Thursday, the Sanctuary authorities said.

The incident happened in July 1965, when the nun, Luigina Traverso, started walking during a visit to the holy site.  Born in 1934, the nun had been wheelchair-bound despite several operations for lumbar sciatica.  She, “was overwhelmed by a sensation of warmth and well-being and warm sensation and felt the sudden impulse to get up,” said the Catholic Silesian Sisters order, the Filles de Marie-Auxiliatrice.  “She started moving her paralysed limbs.”

Bomb hoax hits Lourdes pilgrims on Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Thousands of Roman Catholic pilgrims were evacuated from the Sanctuary of Lourdes in France after a bomb scare which turned out to be a hoax.

The threat came as 30,000 worshippers gathered for the annual Feast of the Assumption, one of the pilgrimage site’s busiest days of the year.

Police gave the all-clear for the site to reopen after a search by bomb disposal teams with sniffer dogs.

More than six million believers visit the Sanctuary each year.

The 67 miracles of Lourdes

Catherine Latapie was the first person to be miraculously cured at Lourdes.  She was healed of paralysis in 1858.  And on the same day she was cured, she gave birth to a boy who later became a priest.

Her spectacular cure was a test case that started an era of reported miracles that’s lasted ever since.  These claims have increased over the years, and led to the setting up of a “Medical Bureau” at the Marian shrine in 1905. The office studies cases of those who claim to have been miraculously cured.

A Miracle at Lourdes

A Miracle at Lourdes

My firstborn son was healed of a heart ailment as an infant at the Marian Shrine in Lourdes, France.

I don’t talk about this often because I’ve had this nagging notion that one day I’ll wake up and realize that it didn’t really happen and my son will be scheduled again for surgery. But Stephen is 8 years old now, and the healing is real.

My wife and I may never submit the details to the medical board at Lourdes, but we only have to look at Stephen to know in our hearts that a miracle took place.

Pope Benedict XVI to Bishops at Lourdes, France – “Your Mission”

On Sunday evening Pope Benedict XVI gathered all of the bishops of France in the Hemicycle of Bernadette Hall and addressed the numerous issues facing the Church in France.

“Man is always in need of liberation from his fears and his sins.

Man must ceaselessly learn or relearn that God is not his enemy, but his infinitely good Creator.

Man needs to know that his life has a meaning, and that he is awaited, at the conclusion of his earthly sojourn, so as to share for ever in Christ’s glory in heaven.

Your mission is to bring the portion of the People of God entrusted to your care to recognize this glorious destiny.”
