No religious liberty in China for Roman Catholics. Only persecution. Bishop’s mourners turn out anyway.

china

Shanghai (AFP) – Thousands of mourners packed a Shanghai square Saturday to bid farewell to “underground” Catholic Bishop Joseph Fan Zhongliang, whose faith led him to endure decades of suffering at the hands of China’s ruling Communist Party, they said.

Fan, who was imprisoned for much of the last two decades and spent his final years under house arrest, died last Sunday at the age of 97 after several days of high fever, according to the US-based Cardinal Kung Foundation, a Roman Catholic organisation.

Mayor of San Antonio Julian (Joseph McCarthy) Castro

The mayor of San Antonio glares down at the electrician, who is bidding for a contract to wire some new public offices.

“Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Roman Catholic Church?”

The electrician looks puzzled, but his assistant Carlos, a man with more experience in political affairs, speaks up.  “Mayor Castro,” he says, “my friend Mario was baptized a Roman Catholic, and went to Catholic schools, but that was a long time ago, and he wasn’t the only one, not by a long shot.  But I can promise you that he hasn’t gone to church in all the fifteen years I’ve worked with him, except for at Easter and Christmas, and he only does that to please his mother.”

“That’s all well and good,” says Mayor Castro, “but it still is troubling that he should maintain any connection at all with an organization that won’t allow women into the priesthood, and that still insists that a man cannot marry another man.”  He turns to Mario.  “Sir,” he says, “can you give us any further assurance that you have never spoken or acted in such a way as to confirm these obnoxious teachings?”

Old movie about the takeover of Hungary and the Soviet/Communist persecution of Cardinal Mindeszenty should serve as a wake-up call for today’s citizenry!

guilty

Hungarian Cardinal Mindeszenty is imprisoned as an enemy of the Communist state. A propaganda film typical of the 1950s, but based on a real-life incident; includes a powerful trial scene. (1949; B&W)

  • Starring: Charles Bickford, Paul Kelly
  • Directed by: Felix E. Feist
  • Runtime: 1 hour 27 minutes
  • Release year: 2005
  • Studio: Synergy Ent

Watch free on Amazon Prime or buy the DVD.

Editor’s note: The torture, trial and political intimidation portrayed in this in this film is unfortunately, now coming back into style. The deadly and totally scurrilous tactics should give every free person pause, since tyranny and despotism is typically only one war … or one election … away … even in these United States.

Cardinal Mindeszenty is both a heroic and a tragic figure, since he stood up against the godless Soviets virtually alone – refusing to compromise his Catholic faith. Unfortunately, Pope Paul VI and the Vatican policy makers had no problem eventually cutting the Cardinal loose, for purely political reasons, as part of their post Vatican II ecumenical outreach to the communists.

Watching the Soviets complete take over and subversion of the Hungarian government unfold, I couldn’t help thinking how the same thing was accomplished only a few years later in the Catholic Church, by certain nameless, faceless Vatican elitists – and only a few years after that, in 1968, when the hippies occupied the streets of Chicago and succeeded in wresting control of the Democratic Party from the “old guard” – eventually turning that party into a collection of fruits, nuts, baby-killers and tyrannical Marxist/socialist ideologues (the likes of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein and a cast of many thousands more.)

Watch “Guilty of Treason” and see if it doesn’t make a similar impact on you. We may be experiencing similar events in this country, very soon!

Thanks to Thomas A. Droleskey for the tip.

A study: What we can possibly know (with some degree of certainty) about the Anti-Christ

antichristcloseup

It is on the unquestionable authority of miracles that the truth of the Christian religion is established and believed by all those who are sincere seekers of the truth.

This impostor will make use of the same means to create objections against the Church of God.  According to St. Paul, his event will be signalized by numerous signs and prodigies due to the operation of Satan; he will work all kinds of miracles, signs, and deceitful prodigies, whose “coming is according to the working of Satan, in ail power, in signs and lying wonders, and in all seduction of iniquity to them that perish,” (2 Thess, 2:9-10].  And we are told in the Apocalypse [13:13) that great will be the things which he will do to deceive mankind. “And he did great signs, so that he made also fire to come down from heaven unto the earth in the sight of men,” The same is said of him by the evangelist when he speaks of false prophets and false Christs. [Math. 13:22), “For there will rise up false Christs and false prophets and they shall show signs and wonders to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect”.

Holy Writ furnishes three examples of the miracles that will be wrought by Antichrist: “He shall cause first to come down from heaven,” (Apoc, 13:13).  “He shall make the beast speak,” (Apoc, 13:15), And finally, he will pass for being dead (Apoc. 13:3), and then he will, as it were, raise himself to life, thus securing the admiration and homage of all men.  The holy Fathers are very explicit on this point and give many details on it.  St. Clement, in his workentitled Third Book of Recognitions, a work on which we may rely as being authentic in spite of the rude attacks made upon it, relates as coming from St. Peter himself that the accursed man will have power to perform miracles of beneficence like those of Our Saviour.  St, Hipollytus, in his work on the consummation of time, does not hesitate to affirm wonderful things which he apparently held from apostolic tradition.  He will heal lepers, make the lame to walk, cast out demons, raise the dead to life.  He will know the most secret and hidden things.  He will move mountains, walk on the waves of the sea, turn day into night, and vine versa.  He will direct the course of the sun at will, and finally, appear as being the master of the elements.

He will therefore appear as having performed miracles similar to all those wrought by Jesus Christ, in order to eclipse His glory and purloin to his own advantage the honors due to the true Messiah.  But St. Paul warns us that all those miracles, so numerous and striking will be the work of deception.  “Therefore God shall send them the apparition of error to believe lying” (2 Thess. 2:11).  Those miracles will be deceptive in their origin, deceptive to their nature, deceptive in their form, deceptive in their object.  Reason and faith, assure us that God alone can perform genuine miracles.  “Blessed be the Lord and God of Israel, who alone doth wonderful things”.  (Ps. 71:18).  Hence we are sufficiently warned that those miracles which Antichrist would attribute to his own divinity are the work of Satan, the father of lies, who performs – and cannot perform any other than – false miracles.

The greater part of those prodigies will be optical illusions and diabolical charms.  Men shall be deceived by appearances, hence the reason why the Scriptures say that he will work miracles before the eyes of man and not in the sight of God (Apoc, 13:13).

Some of them, it is true, will surpass all human power and will be materially prodigious.  This, however, is not to be wondered at.  In the hierarchy of beings, man is naturally inferior to the angels, even to the fallen angel, who has preserved his natural qualities.  The devils are able to do things which are impossible to man, yet their deeds are miracles relatively and not absolutely, since it does not belong to the province of any created being to perform a miracle properly so called; this requires the intervention of divine power, which belongs to God alone. Consequently, of this latter order of miracles, Antichrist will perform none, although some of his prodigies, such as raising the dead to life, which he will seem to do, must have all the appearance of true miracles.

On the Current Christian Apocalypse in Egypt and the Middle East

Four Horsemen

…thirteen years before the “Arab Spring,” I could feel in my bowels that the end was near; that the apocalypse of Egyptian Christendom was coming. And curiously enough, I sensed this, too, in many of the more articulate Copts I spoke with: that there was something different in kind, in spirit, about the Islamist threat, now even coming from within the Mubarak government, which nominally protected them.

Over the centuries there had been persecution enough, and occasional pogroms; there had been constant pressure on Christians to convert to Islam, by which a nation still probably majority Christian at the time of the first Crusades gradually became overwhelmingly Muslim. Yet all this had been mostly against a background of “live and let live.” Now, perceptibly, the ground rules were changing. “Islamism” wasn’t “Islam” any more.

The Church Militant

The Church Militant (ecclesia militans).—The “saints” of Christ, His “holy nation” (1 Peter ii, 9), fight here on earth, not with loud clamor or great display, but in quiet and stillness. Their wrestling is not against men, but against sin; they seek the pearl of great price and the hidden treasure.

They are depicted in the Sermon on the Mount, in the concise and graphic phrases of our Lord.

They are the “poor in spirit,” the little ones of state and Church and society, the unappreciated and despised, who day by day go their inconspicuous way of duty, and cannot marvel enough that the great and holy God should wish to be with them also.

They are the “meek” who never grumble at life and who ever accept with great content whatever God sends them.

They are the “mourners” who in the lonely night cry plaintively to God: Lord, not my will, but Thine be done, and who at the last can thank their God with glad hearts that they are allowed to suffer with Jesus.

They are those who “hunger and thirst after justice,” those who reck nothing of comfortable piety and well-fed virtue, but on the contrary are pierced to the soul with the thought of their unworthiness, and put their whole trust constantly in the redeeming power of Jesus.

They are the “merciful,” for whom the need of others is their need, whom no obstacle, no sin or foulness can hinder from succoring their starving brother, and whose hands are closed by no ingratitude.

They are the “pure of heart,” men of a childlike simplicity and singleness of aim, kindhearted, guileless and always cheerful, for whom life is all sunshine, a constant loving cry of Abba, Father!

They are the “peace-makers,” men of the Holy Spirit, of inward maturity and serene equipoise of mind, from whom quiet and peace flow forth as from a sanctuary, before whom all discord is ashamed and dumb.

And lastly they are those who are persecuted “for justice sake,” “for His sake,” those apostolic souls and tireless workers in the vineyard, who proclaim His truth by speech and writing, by teaching and example, “in season and out of season” (2 Tim. iv, 2). They seek not their own advantage, neither recognition from the world, nor honors from the Church; they seek only souls. And commonly their lot is abuse, persecution and hatred. For their life is a special challenge to the world, and draws down the scorn and laughter of its wise ones.

More of the same in Syria: Wherever the US and its NATO allies have intervened to change regimes in the Middle East, Christians are the first to be targeted (and killed)

Christians are being systematically targeted for genocide in Syria according to Vatican and other sources with contacts on the ground among the besieged Christian community. According to reports by the Vatican’s Fides News Agency collected by the Centre for the Study of Interventionism, the US-backed Free Syrian Army rebels and ever more radical spin-off factions are sacking Christian churches, shooting Christians dead in the street, broadcasting ultimatums that all Christians must be cleansed from the rebel-held villages, and even shooting priests.

French Bishop Philip Tournyol Clos, a greek-Catholic Melkite Archimandrite, traveled through Syria and, according to the Holy See’s press agency, reported back that Western press was spreading disinformation about the real nature of the uprising in Syria and thereby prolonging and deepening the conflict.

Andy Garcia: You don’t have to be a Catholic to appreciate ‘For Greater Glory’

“About 90,000 people died in three years (1926-1929). There was torture, priests being hung from telegraph poles. It was a very ugly moment in Mexican history,” Garcia says of the conflict set off by the government’s persecution of Roman Catholics. “The curious thing was I didn’t know anything about it … And when I started to ask some Mexican friends … they didn’t know anything about it.”

In the film, which opens Friday in the U.S. after its debut in Mexico, Garcia plays an atheist and retired decorated general who accepts an offer to lead the National League for the Defense of Religious Liberty in the war. He doesn’t share their religious fervor, but he does believe in the basic right of freedom.

How the Chinese communists destroyed the Catholic Church in Shanghai

While working in the Shanghai Municipal Archives, Father Mariani discovered newly de-classified dossiers that detailed the party’s campaign against Catholics and how the communists dismantled the Church in Shanghai.

Realizing that he had a real treasure in his hands, he asked the archivists if he could have copies of the material; incredibly, they said, “Yes.”

“Then things got interesting,” Father Mariani recalled in a recent interview.

Did Constantine’s victory under the sign of the Cross lead to persecution of the Jews?

As Claire Sotinel, Professor of Roman History at the University Paris-Est Cherethites, will explain during her presentation at the international conference “Constantine the Great: The Roots of Europe,” to be held in the Vatican from 18 to 21 April: all Constantine did was open a Christian church in Jerusalem, which at the time was not Jewish, but pagan.

But the Chief Rabbi of Rome, Riccardo Di Segni, disagrees. “The conversion of Constantine changed everything,” the spiritual leader of the oldest Jewish community in Europe told Vatican Insider. “That event has had a decisive impact on history, and is closely related to the persecution of the Jews.” The conversion of Constantine, he added, “has divided history into ‘before’ and ‘after,’ causing such turmoil that Emperor Julian’s unsuccessful attempt to remedy it earned him the title of ‘the Apostate.’ It goes against all historical evidence to deny it.”

Link

Editor’s note: The seminal event for the Jews was the 70 AD destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, which was followed up by many years of wars and rebellions, leaving what remained of the Holy Land under the occupation of pagans, rather than Jews.

But it was the persecution of Christians by the Jews which ultimately contributed most to the separation of the two faiths, since that (along with the grace of God) is what caused St. Peter and St. Paul to journey to Rome, in the first place.

All this happened more than two centuries before Constantine.

The Rabbi does have a point, though. Once Christianity became the “official” faith of the Roman Empire … Judaism … along with many of the Roman’s favorite pagan cults … would soon and forever more … be cast as obsolete and essentially apostate religions.

Decisive victory at the Milvian Bridge was a major boon to the Catholic Church

Constantine’s decisive victory at the Milvian Bridge, he remarked came at a time when “the era of imperial persecution against Christians was about to come to an end, giving way to the evangelization of the entire empire and molding the profile of western Europe and the Balkans; a Europe which gave rise to the values of human dignity, distinction and cooperation between religion and the state, and freedom of conscience, religion and worship.”

“Coincidence” is the Holy Spirit’s Middle Name – “Viva Cristo Rey!”

New Movie, opening June 1: For Greater Glory

For Greater Glory (formerly entitled Cristiada.) The must see movie for 2012 for all American Catholics and all of our fellow Americans who cherish religious liberty.

At a time when the Obama administration is firing the opening shots in a struggle against the religious freedom of Catholics, and exploiting a de facto schism within the Church in America to accomplish their ends, a film is being released this election year detailing the struggle of Mexican Catholics in the last century against a bitterly anti-Catholic regime.

Most of the time in life coincidences are merely coincidences, but sometimes I suspect they are sent by God for His purposes. In any case it appears to be a worthy movie to retell the heroic story of Mexican Catholics and their fight for the Church and freedom.

Editor’s note: This movie has a more universal theme, a more well known cast, and addresses a much broader audience than did The Passion of the Christ, which was arguably responsible for firming up the Christian vote against that year’s pro-abort, pro-homosexual Democratic presidential candidate, and which may well have been responsible for the generally more positive outcome of that election.

For Greater Glory illustrates the problems godless tyrants invariably experience whenever they attempt to persecute or suppress heroic people dedicated to faith and freedom.

As Ed Morrissey notes: With a cast that includes Academy Award nominees Andy Garcia, Peter O’Toole, and Catalina Sandino Moreno as well as Eva Longoria and Oscar Isaac, the film about the Cristero War in Mexico in the late 1920s will be hard to ignore.

Bad fruits of Iraq war: Catholic population of Iraq fell from over 800,000, to less than 150,000 now.

Archbishop Broglio believes Catholicism suffered after the invasion because of a perceived closeness to its previous ruler. He said Saddam Hussein tended “to trust Catholics, and gave them positions of responsibility.” One prominent Iraqi Catholic was Hussein’s Foreign Minister Tarik Aziz.

And even if Catholics “weren’t particularly part of the regime, they became identified with the regime,” Archbishop Broglio said.

“Before, they were a minority that was protected, but now they are a minority that is not protected.”

Catholics persecuting Catholics … in Missouri!

For those who went on the Starkenburg Pilgrimage, you knew it was a day of obstruction by Jefferson City diocese, Jefferson City, Missouri.

Starkenburg Shrine had chains with locks to keep us out, beefy, aggressive female guards at 8:00am in the morning, you know, the usual makings of a sedate, conflict-avoidant group of traditional Catholics.

After a variety of obfuscations, nonetheless,  after 12 miles of penance after being told that we could not have Mass at the Shrine for the first time in 13 years, we did have Mass.  The boys from St. Mary’s, the Knights of Immaculata, led by Fr. Borbeau, after praying outside the gate, went past the macho but female-gendered, well-prepared guards who were not going to let a few hundred traditional catholics desecrate the  Starkenburg Shrine, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, by, gasp-  having a Latin Mass by 600 faithful who have just walked 12 miles and 5 hrs praying and doing penance.

A full afternoon of civil disobediance resulted in young men walking past the uber-scary guards, followed shortly thereafter, by the civilized boys of LaSallette.  Oh, so much more could be said,  the bottom line is that Mass was said, despite every effort before hand and during to prevent it.  The sherrif, a county trooper, and a police SUV, there may have been more, were not enought to prevent what had been done for the previous 13 years.

Catholics persecuted, priest tortured in North Sudan

KHARTOUM, Sudan – A Roman Catholic priest of Kadugli parish in Sudan’s embattled South Kordofan is in hiding after being detained three times in the past three months.

Authorities tortured the Rev. Abraham Lual on two of those occasions with accusations that as a Christian he opposes northern forces’ military campaign in the disputed region, he told Compass by phone.

Detained at 10:20 a.m. on Sept. 6 and interrogated for five hours at the security unit’s head office in El-Obied, Lual told Compass that authorities are monitoring his movements and those of other church leaders on the assumption that they are supported by Western Christians opposed to Islam and the north’s military push for territory in South Kordofan.

He was also detained for two days in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, on Aug. 28, and the torture he suffered left him with injuries to his left leg, he said. Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) agents had also arrested him on June 8, accusing him of preaching that people should oppose the Islamic government, he said; authorities tortured him for two days at that time as well.

China Builds Special Prison for Forced Abortion Opponent

Chinese officials are building a special prison to house forced abortion opponent Chen Guangcheng, who has been subjected to home detention and monitoring since his release from prison earlier this year.

Chen, who exposed a massive campaign of forced abortions and sterilizations in Linyi, China to the western world in an interview with the Washington Post, spent more than four years in prison for his “crime.” Family planning officials held a bogus trial on charges that Chen supposedly destroyed property in a local protest he never attended. Eritrean Christians facing ‘unimaginable suffering’ in Egypt

A Channel 4 documentary, “Breaking into Israel”, last week charted the harsh 900-mile journey made by Eritrean refugees, some of whom die before reaching their destination. Some are shot dead crossing the Egypt-Israel border and others are caught and returned to Eritrea where they face torture and even death.

According to Barnabas Fund, the majority of the Eritrean refugees are Christians.

It warned that many of them were ending up in Egyptian prisons or being held hostage for $20,000 ransoms in the deserts of Sinai by Bedouin Muslim nomads who work with human traffickers.
