Annual Red Mass in Wasington DC: Supreme Court is told human law should reflect God’s law.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Five of the nine U.S. Supreme Court justices have been told at the annual Red Mass for the legal profession that they’re subject to a higher law.

On the eve of their new term, Chief Justice John Roberts and justices Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Stephen Breyer sat in the front row of St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington, along with Vice President Joseph Biden.

In the homily, Vatican Archbishop J. Augustine Di Noia indirectly denounced abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage. He said laws should reflect divine principles, including what he called “the inviolability of innocent life from conception to natural death” and “the sanctity of marriage.”

He said the legal profession is charged with protecting rights that come from God, not from government.

A society that masks ‘totalitarianism’ with ‘hope’ will destroy itself, warns Archbishop Burke

In our culture, “the law more and more dares to force those with the sacred trust of caring for the health of their brothers and sisters to violate the most sacred tenets of their consciences, and to force individuals and institutions to cooperate in egregious violations of the natural moral law,” he said. “In such a society, the administration of justice is no longer a participation in the justice of God, an obedient response to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, but a façade cloaking our own selfishness and refusal to give our lives for the sake of the good of all our brothers and sisters.”

“It is a society which is abandoning its Judeo-Christian foundations, the fundamental obedience to God’s law which safeguards the common good, and is embracing a totalitarianism which masks itself as the ‘hope,’ the ‘future,’ of our nation. Reason and faith teaches us that such a society can only produce violence and death and in the end destroy itself,” Archbishop Burke warned.

Catholic Cardinal Asks Supreme Court to Reject Abortion During Red Mass

Red Mass - J. Roberts

Washington, DC ( — Top government officials were exposed to a call from a Catholic cardinal to reject abortions and uphold the sanctity of life during the Red Mass on Sunday. The mass is a traditional event that takes place before the Supreme Court starts the first day of its next term, which takes place the first Monday in October.

Six Supreme Court justices, Vice President Joe Biden, and two members of pro-abortion President Barack Obama’s administration were present for the event.

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston, Texas gave a homily and presented the pro-life message to the top officials. He calls on attorneys to be a voice for all clients, including those who have not been born.

“They are poor and wealthy, confused and lucid, polite and impolited,” he said. “In some cases, the clients are voiceless, for they lack influence; in others they are literally voiceless, not yet with tongues and even without names, and require our most careful attention and radical support.”

“Red Mass” in Washington DC on 10/4 will draw anti-abortion protests

Red Mass and Abortion: On October 4, 2009, DC area Pro-life advocates will be present outside St. Matthew’s Cathedral Before the annual “Red Mass” to plead with Judges and Politicians to protect unborn babies from murder. Randall Terry states: “This Red Mass is a beautiful prayer for Justice to reign with judges and statesmen; but in practice it is a mockery, because many of those attending help kill innocent babies by the millions.”

DC Area Pro-life leaders Randall Terry, Missy Smith, and Dick Retta will be joined by a large group of pro-life advocates outside of St. Matthew’s Cathedral to call attention to the 50,000,000 babies who have been murdered by “surgical abortion” in America since 1973.

Moreover, these Catholics will focus on Canon 915, which specifically forbids Catholics who are in public scandal – such as Catholic politicians who support child-killing by abortion – from receiving the Holy Eucharist.

Randall Terry states: “This Red Mass is a beautiful call to pray for Justice amongst judges and statesmen; but in many ways it is a mockery, because many of those attending help kill innocent babies by the millions. While some attend with great devotion, others scoff at Christ by their actions, and commit sacrilege by receiving the Body and Blood of Christ while they hold a knife to the throat of the unborn.

“Perhaps Jesus weeps with grief for the babies, His Church, and for the souls of those men and women who dare to approach His Altar while continuing to kill His precious children.”

Note: Pro-life advocates DO NOT have plans or intentions of disturbing the mass. They will speak to attendees as they enter and exit the mass, hold up signs of aborted babies, and signs specific to those attending the Mass.
