No religious liberty in China for Roman Catholics. Only persecution. Bishop’s mourners turn out anyway.

china

Shanghai (AFP) – Thousands of mourners packed a Shanghai square Saturday to bid farewell to “underground” Catholic Bishop Joseph Fan Zhongliang, whose faith led him to endure decades of suffering at the hands of China’s ruling Communist Party, they said.

Fan, who was imprisoned for much of the last two decades and spent his final years under house arrest, died last Sunday at the age of 97 after several days of high fever, according to the US-based Cardinal Kung Foundation, a Roman Catholic organisation.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wa: A woman’s right to access free or low-cost contraception under the Affordable Care Act trumps anyone else’s religious freedom.

The Obama administration is being handed a lesson in Christianity 101 as religious leaders rise up to condemn an Obamacare requirement that forces religious organizations to pay for abortifacients or face crippling financial penalties.

“Christian doctrine states it is a sin for a Christian to enable or aid another in doing what the Christian believes to be sin,” states a brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court by a coalition of dozens of prominent Protestant theologians, African-American pastors and participants in the Manhattan Declaration.

Dozens of lawsuits have been filed over the requirement in the Affordable Health Care Act that employers pay for abortifacents. Two cases, involving Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Woods, are pending for review before the Supreme Court.

Even members of Congress have weighed in against the provision, which effectively forces Christians to violate their faith by participating in the killing of unborn children.

Father Ray Leonard, the Catholic Navy Chaplain who sued the Department of Defense and the Navy after he was barred from celebrating Mass at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in Georgia during the recent the Government shutdown, is now the target of Government retaliation even though the Department of Justice indicated the day after the lawsuit was filed that he could resume his duties as a Navy Chaplain.

Perhaps one reason we have never had a Jesuit pope before, is that so many Jesuits write in a jargon-laden fashion that is hard for non-Jesuits to figure out.  Case in point:  self-absorbed promethean neopelagian.  Pope Francis uses this baroque insult in Evangelii Gaudium:

Editor’s note: The essence of Vatican II has finally devolved into a debate over crass clerical name-calling vs. Religious Liberty.

Religious Liberty is an essential teaching of Vatican II while name-calling is sanctioned and approved only in the (unofficial) Liberal Cleric’s Playbook. Yet after almost fifty years, there is still no religious liberty in the Catholic Church for those with a more Traditional orientation.

You can’t make this stuff up!

If this is the “New Evangelization” we’re in big trouble!

Traditionalists have charged that a double standard is at play, with a conservative, tradition-minded order being targeted for particular sanction on ideological grounds by a pope with a progressive bent.

“I hope that I am not being intemperate in describing this as rather harsh,” the Rev. Timothy Finigan, a British priest whose “The Hermeneutic of Continuity” blog is much-read in traditionalist circles, wrote last week of the sanctions.

Editor’s note: Is this Pope Francis’ “SSPX” Moment”? The Catholic Church continues to advocate religious liberty for Jews, Muslims, Pagans, Atheists and even (especially?) liberal Catholic heretics. But no religious freedom for traditional Catholics!

Fox News writer who compared Pope Francis to Barack Obama fired from his gig at Catholic News Service

Tony Spence, editor in chief of the wire service, which operates under the aegis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said he had been “very pleased” with Shaw’s work, which included an analysis of the comics book industry. Spence said he knew that Shaw worked for Fox but it never caused a conflict — until this week. Spence wrote in an email:

“(W)hen he penned the recent piece on Pope Francis, comparing him to President Obama, and presenting it as an op/ed, he seriously compromised his credibility as an objective Catholic journalist for CNS. Had Adam merely reported on the pope’s apostolic exhortation, even citing unflattering sources, there would have been no problem. However, Adam’s caustic condemnation of the exhortation and of Francis himself, one of the key figures we cover daily with objectivity, fairness and certainly charity, left me little choice but to end his service with us.”

Editor’s note: Today’s hopelessly “beige” Catholic News Service is vaguely reminiscent of the Soviet newspaper “Pravda” back in the Cold War days, where support for Soviet ideology and the party line was routinely substituted for truth, objectivity, fairness and charity.

CNS’s Tony Spence is a paid “spinmeister” for those who run the Catholic Church. Objective, fair and charitable, he and CNS is not! Spence – under orders from his bosses at the USCCB – is promoting Pope Francis – right or wrong – just like the main stream media has always shamelessly promoted Barack Obama.

Truth has nothing to do with it.

Once again, the Catholic Church promotes religious liberty for everyone EXCEPT conservative Catholics!

Pope Francis singles out the Latin Mass crowd for particular criticism (again). Then he (probably unintentionally) takes it right back!

From the Pope’s new Apostolic “Exaltation”:

“In some people we see an ostentatious preoccupation for the liturgy, for doctrine and for the Church’s prestige, but without any concern that the Gospel have a real impact on God’s faithful people and the concrete needs of the present time”.

Since I don’t know anyone like this, I wish the Pope would specifically point them out or at least, give us a list of names!

Then curiously, Pope Francis seems to say just the reverse:

“Pastoral ministry in a missionary style is not obsessed with the disjointed transmission of a multitude of doctrines to be insistently imposed…the message has to concentrate on the essentials, on what is most beautiful, most grand, most appealing and at the same time most necessary. The message is simplified, while losing none of its depth and truth, and thus becomes all the more forceful and convincing.”

massdms4enh

What could be more essential, more beautiful, more grand, more appealing, more necessary and more empowering than Our Lord Jesus Christ, becoming present for us on the altar, at Mass – body and blood, soul and divinity – the source and center of all Catholic worship – by means of an ancient liturgy, fully approved by Tradition, which is at once solemn, formal, pious, glorious, reverent, faithful, powerful, joyous, true and ever new?

I’ve never been a stickler about the Latin Mass. I appreciate a properly celebrated Mass, in any of the approved forms. That’s why I can’t believe the Pope keeps obsessing about this!

Is religious liberty exclusively for the Jews, Pagans, Protestants and progressive Catholics, or do Traditional Catholics also have a right to worship – within practical limits – in the way they prefer?

None of the pre-Vatican II devotions and liturgies were ever legitimately outlawed by the Church. None of them were ever found lacking, for genuine doctrinal or efficacious reasons.

All of these things were in fact, time-tested over centuries – even millennium – until the modernist Vatican II “Fathers” unilaterally decided to discard the lot of them, in favor of “Catholic light” liturgical novelties that are, in truth, more Lutheran and Methodist than Catholic. Then – just to be sure – they illegally banned the old Latin Mass, for almost fifty years.

With our current hierarchy well aware of the Pope’s obvious disdain for such things, we can probably expect the “Francis Effect” to “bury” the old Latin Mass once again – this time, for God only knows how long!

It’s all liberal, left-wing politics! Barack Obama couldn’t have managed (or should I say mismanaged) things any better!

Is this what the Pope means, when he writes, “The message is simplified, while losing none of its depth and truth, and thus becomes all the more forceful and convincing.” ? If so, we’ve got big trouble in Vatican City – since about seventy five percent of post Vatican II Catholics have already voted “NO” by walking away from the Novus Ordo Mass – and the post-Vatican II Catholic Church – never to return!

But to be fair – the popularity of the “Clown Mass”, the “Circus Mass” and the “Picnic Mass” has never been higher!

Special Message from the Bishops of the United States: The disastrous “Seamless Garment Approach” is back – plus one more thing.

usccblogo

The bishops of this country have just concluded their traditional fall meeting in Baltimore and have spent time on issues important to them and their people: help to those suffering from Typhoon Haiyan; an update on the situation in Haiti; matters of worship and teaching; service to the poor; and comprehensive immigration reform. Among those priorities is the protection of religious freedom, especially as threatened by the HHS mandate.

Pope Francis has reminded us that “In the context of society, there is only one thing which the Church quite clearly demands: the freedom to proclaim the Gospel in its entirety, even when it runs counter to the world, even when it goes against the tide.”

We stand together as pastors charged with proclaiming the Gospel in its entirety. That Gospel calls us to feed the poor, heal the sick, and educate the young, and in so doing witness to our faith in its fullness. Our great ministries of service and our clergy, religious sisters and brothers, and lay faithful, especially those involved in Church apostolates, strive to answer this call every day, and the Constitution and the law protect our freedom to do so.

Court upholds Cardinal Dolan’s segregation of $55M Milwaukee Archdiocese cemetery fund.

In issuing the ruling Monday, U.S. District Judge Rudolph T. Randa said including the funds would violate free exercise of religion under the First Amendment and a 1993 law aimed at protecting religious freedom. Randa cited the Catholic belief in the resurrection, which teaches that the body ultimately reunites with the soul, and the role of Catholic cemeteries in the exercise of that belief under canon law.

“The sacred nature of Catholic cemeteries – and compliance with the church’s historical and religious traditions and mandates requiring their perpetual care – are understood as a fundamental exercise of this core belief,” said Randa in overturning an earlier decision by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Susan V. Kelley.

The decision was a major victory for the archdiocese, and appears to eliminate one of the last large assets available to sex abuse victims who have filed claims in the bankruptcy.

Your participation is requested: USCCB Call To Prayer For Life, Marriage, And Religious Liberty.

usccblogo

Join the Movement

  • What: The U.S. bishops have approved a pastoral strategy to advance a Movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty. It is essentially a call to prayer, penance, and sacrifice for the sake of renewing a culture of life, marriage, and religious liberty in our country.
  • Why: The well-being of society requires that life, marriage, and religious liberty are promoted and protected. Serious threats to each of these goods, however, have raised unprecedented challenges to the Church and to the nation. Two immediate flashpoints are the following:First is the HHS Mandate, which requires almost all employers, including Catholic employers, to pay for employees’ contraception, sterilization, and abortifacient drugs regardless of conscientious objections. This is a clear affront to America’s first freedom, religious liberty, as well as to the inherent dignity of every human person.Second, current trends in both government and culture are moving toward redefining marriage as the union of any two persons, ignoring marriage’s fundamental meaning and purpose as the universal institution that unites a man and a woman with each other and with the children born from their union. These challenges call for increased awareness and formation, as well as spiritual stamina and fortitude among the faithful, so that we may all be effective and joyful witnesses of faith, hope and charity.
  • When: In this Year of Faith, starting on the feast of the Holy Family (Dec. 30, 2012) until the feast of Christ the King (Nov. 24, 2013)
  • Who: All of the Catholic faithful are encouraged to participate
  • Where: Throughout the entire country; at your local parish, cathedral, school or home

How To Participate: 5 Ways

Starts tomorrow: Obamacare will force institutions, churches and individuals to purchase abortion-inducing drugs and pay for sterilization and abortion in direct opposition to their beliefs, conscience and historic teachings of the Church.

On Saturday afternoon, 22 members of the group knelt on the sidewalk in prayer and were arrested by Capitol Police, with the prayer rally (and possible arrests) planned to continue through Oct. 2.

The group says that the only basis for their arrest is that the sidewalk in front of the White House is a “restricted zone” for free speech.

Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life told WND, “We have stood up for life and religious freedom in hundreds of cities. Today we do so at the president’s house. I am delighted to be here.”

The group says that the president is “dictating to Christians how they should live their faith” and that they are taking a stand, while risking arrest for doing so.

Michelle Obama lies when she claims her husband tells the truth

President Obama has just released a new web ad, in which he he claims to be a defender of religious freedom and a great admirer of the of faith in our public life.

I take great encouragement from President Obama’s latest web ad—not because I believe a word he says, but because it shows that our massive, grassroots campaign to stop Obama’s HHS Mandate and restore religious freedom is working.

President Obama realizes he’s vulnerable on the religious freedom issue. It shows he’s worried—and he should be, especially with the next wave of nationwide Stand Up for Religious Freedom rallies coming on October 20, just 17 days before Election Day.

If President Obama really valued the role of faith in public life, he wouldn’t be trying to force employers to violate their religious convictions. He wouldn’t be willing to see institutions like Christian Colleges and Catholic Hospitals shut down rather than submit to a mandate that forces them to violate their core values.

Obama’s record shows that his “unwavering commitment” isn’t to religious liberty, but to the radical pro-abortion agenda of Planned Parenthood.

Sebelius just another “cog” in Obama’s lawless regime

A new report from the U.S. Office of Special Counsel notified President Barack Obama today that Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius broke the law when she advocated for the election of a candidate during a speech at a pro-abortion group’s event.

Sebelius violated the hatch Act, which prohibited federal employees from officially supporting the election or defeat of a candidate.

The report, according to ABC, indicates Sebelius broke the law when she appeared as the Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker at a February 25, 2012 event sponsored by the pro-abortion group Human Rights Campaign in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Fortnight for Freedom Issue #5: Archbishop William Lori responds to those who would like to restrict freedom of religion.

Some of the strongest critics of the bishops’ position maintain that the Catholic church wishes to curtail the freedom of others. Since Catholic institutions do not exclusively serve Catholics, not providing support for contraception limits the freedom of those who do not subscribe to Catholic teachings about human sexuality. Underlying some of these criticisms is the point that the Catholic Church, with its all-male clergy and hierarchical structure, is an organization that doesn’t appreciate the full freedom of its members.

A response to some of these points was made by Baltimore Archbishop William Lori during a recent address as chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty.

Lori called attention to what he characterizes as “strange inversions” in the public debate about the HHS mandate. Against the claim that the Catholic Church is attempting to encode its doctrine in law, Lori observed that the Catholic Church does not want “to force anybody to do anything.” Instead, the issue is government demanding uniformity and coercing religious employers to violate their own values.

While Lori did not address those who criticize the very structure of the Catholic Church, he argued that in the name of diversity and choice the government is effectively doing away with diversity and choice in the public sphere. Indeed, one of Lori’s central concerns is that HHS mandate relies on a very restrictive understanding of what it means to be a religious person -after all, people do not leave their religiosity behind when they leave their mosque or synagogue, church or temple.

Fortnight for Freedom Issue #2: It’s really all about abortion.

by Doug Lawrence

Once a couple makes a conscientious decision to prevent conception, the likelihood of abortion goes way, way up. Why? Simply because virtually all forms of artificial contraception have a high failure rate.

What constitutes a “high” rate? As little as a 1% failure rate may be considered high. How so? Consider this practical scenario: If  only 1% of U.S. commercial airline flights crashed each year,  some 200,000 passengers would die, and almost no one would feel safe flying the “friendly skies”.

Historical failure rates for birth control pills are substantially higher than one percent, while condoms routinely fail some twenty to fifty percent of the time. With abortion promoted and in many cases, subsidized by the government, contraceptive failure often leads to the untimely death of the baby.

The result is some 1.4 million abortions each year in the United States alone … accounting for 37 percent of the nearly 4 million annual recorded deaths in the United States … the number three cause of death … exceeded only by the “top twelve” major medical illnesses, combined.

Liberal/communist/socialist secular ideologues like our president, along with many who serve in the current U.S. House and Senate have long been committed to wide spread birth control and abortion at the hands of quasi-governmental entities like Planned Parenthood, in the hope of eliminating or minimizing the poor “underclasses” … so as to avoid the high costs associated with taking care of them.

These people … many of them allegedly Catholic … expect to achieve financial savings through government approved, institutionalized murder (legalized abortion) … yet somehow, they have been totally unable to live within their means. In truth, there’s no telling how many more innocents may have to be killed under ObamaCare, in order to bring the federal budget into balance.

While the problem of poverty still exists, the government has succeeded in denying the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to over 50 million innocent human beings over the past 40 years, by permitting them to be slaughtered, while still in their mother’s wombs.

For these and many other very good reasons, the Catholic Church teaches … and has always taught … since the earliest days … that artificial birth control and abortion are intrinsic evils … contrary to both the will of God and the common good of all mankind.

Many in the U.S. government (and elsewhere) obviously believe otherwise. Hence, the current conflict over religious freedom.

The result is the current spate of federal lawsuits by the Catholic Church and other related entities, asking for relief from the onerous, narrowly framed and unconstitutional HHS contraceptive mandate recently handed down by the Obama regime, which seeks to force the Catholic Church (and others) to pay for birth control, sterilizations and abortions, in spite of their consistent and strongly held religious beliefs to the contrary.

Abortion is a much bigger “deal” than most people think

Fortnight for Freedom Issue #1: President Barack Obama wants to replace authentic Christianity with his phony, secular religious belief system.

by Doug Lawrence

While the 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution prevents Congress from setting up a state religion, or from interfering with the free exercise and practice of any other, the President and the Executive Branch of the U. S. Government have no direct power or authority in these matters, at all.

The President has only indirect authority to enact certain programs and policies under the auspices of the controversial Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) … the constitutionality of which has yet to be determined.

Mr. Obama and his minions believe that artificial birth control is good, that is should be provided to all, free of charge, and that the American People should be forced to pay for it … not via taxation … but through some queer type of forced conscription … where insurance premiums are creatively diverted by the government … and then used for something which the U.S. Congress never envisioned, intended or sanctioned.

The President’s liberal secular ideology on this matter constitutes nothing less than an alternative religious belief.  As such, any government attempt to impose that belief system or practice on the citizens of the United States is expressly prohibited by the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

In short, the President has absolutely no authority to demand that the Catholic Church … or anyone else … pay for someone else’s birth control, sterilization, or abortion … either directly … or through an indirect diversion of health care premiums … but for a number of reasons, he would like you to think that he does.

Over the last 2,000 years, the Catholic Church has seen scores of petty tyrants (and some not so petty ones) come and go … and the Church still stands. Tell President Barack Obama that Catholics are not easily fooled, nor are they easily intimidated.

Taking appropriate note of Barack Obama’s Marxist/Leninist “roots” … not too long ago … when push came to shove … the Soviet Union squared off against the people of Poland, Solidarity, Pope John Paul II and the Catholic Church. History duly records, in spite of all their tanks and troops, that it was the Soviets who were shaken to their very foundations, and then, shortly ceased to exist.

The Catholic Church remains the world’s longest reigning continuous world government, not because of the power of corrupt men like President Barack Obama, or even good men like Pope John Paul II, but according to the grace and power of Jesus Christ, who is God Almighty, King of Kings and Lord of Lords … as well as the founder, advocate and eternal CEO of the Catholic Church.

Let that be a lesson to the forces of evil, wherever they may lurk!

The new wisdom is that Catholics vote just like everybody else. That purported wisdom isn’t wise.

The Catholic vote differs in four decisive ways from the Protestant, Jewish, and secular votes.
