The answers to three key Catholic questions speak volumes

questionOnce again let me stress that I developed this set of questions in the mid-1980s as a journalistic tool. The goal, when asking these questions, is to listen carefully to the answers.

It is especially interesting, of course, to note when people remain silence or try to find a way to maneuver around the questions without answering.

Different types of believers, of course, have different answers. The goal is to listen carefully and then respond with follow-up questions that yield nuggets of on-the-record doctrinal, as opposed to political, information. The goal is to transcend mere labels.

Here are those questions, once again:

(1) Are the biblical accounts of the resurrection of Jesus accurate? Did this event really happen?

(2) Is salvation found through Jesus Christ, alone? Was Jesus being literal when he said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6)?

(3) Is sex outside of the Sacrament of Marriage a sin?

Church controversy: Bishop acts to reign in small group of scandalous nuns in Madison, Wisconsin area.

…materials and methods of the members of Wisdom’s Well may appear to promote opinions that are contrary to the Church faith. The Diocese of Madison pursued this matter with utmost confidentiality to protect the reputations of all parties. The specific limitation of this issue to members of Wisdom’s Well and the confidential documents sent to the priests were also communicated personally, confidentially, and directly by me to the Prioress of the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation at the time of the confidential communication to the priests in the Diocese of Madison.

However, with the apparent leak of both the confidential statement sent to priests and the accompanying “synopsis of concerns” regarding the members of Wisdom’s Well, it is now necessary to protect the good reputation of the Church.

These (LCWR) sisters are into all the crazy stuff you tell us about.

There are new age ideas about inclusiveness, reiki, yoga, male oppression.

They make four “Generous Promises” which include working for systematic change, getting rid of institutions in favor of inclusiveness, and taking care of “Earth,” who is dying.

That was new to me. How have we not heard of that one from you?

Apparently the earth is a person, and you can also find reference to revering “Earth” on their site.

Maybe I’m just too young to understand. Is this idea a holdover from the 60′s or has it just “evolved” since then?

Does the “W” in LCWR (as in Leadership Council of Women Religious) actually stand for “wacko”?

The Charlotte diocesan newspaper reported:

Sister Campbell questioned many Catholics’ focus on that one issue [abortion], criticizing the pro-life movement as not considering the entire spectrum of Catholic social teaching, but then she acknowledged that “progressive” Catholics like herself have contributed to the discord between pro-life and pro-social justice Catholics.

Editor’s note: As if “the entire spectrum of Catholic social teaching” would somehow permit abortion, in some case or another? Absolutely not! To which Catholic Church does this sister belong … or think she belongs?

“I have allowed a very narrow perspective on what is life, because I actually feel like I’m going to develop a rash or something if I use ‘life’ in that broader sense,” she said.

Editor’s note: That’s not a rash, sister. That’s the Holy Spirit convicting you of the serious error of your ways! Please explain what “life in that broader sense” might actually mean. Is that leftist code for “it’s OK to kill babies for the sake of personal convenience?”

She has avoided framing social justice concerns as “pro-life” issues, she said, “because I don’t want to be thought of as in (the pro-life) camp. Because of my pride, as opposed to my faith.

Editor’s note: This coming from someone who obviously has more faith in her pride than in the only Church that was ever personally founded, authorized, empowered and eternally guaranteed by Jesus Christ, while he still walked the earth. Sister, if you’re not pro-life, you’re pro-abortion. Why not just admit it?

“We need “to reclaim the fullness of our faith,” she said. We need to go beyond left vs. right, socialist vs. capitalist, she said: We are Catholic.

Editor’s note: Amen, sister! That’s exactly what the Vatican is saying. So why are you appearing at a leftist Catholic venue in order to shamelessly demagogue the issue?

Traditional sister: “Because we wear a visible sign of our consecration to Christ, students are less likely to misbehave around us and more likely to take what we say seriously.”

The sisters were as classic in their attitude about behavior and belief as in their attire. Yet, they were as youthful in approach – incorporating the latest technology into lesson plans – as they were in age, the average for the 116 members of their order, established in 1997, being 28 years.

They had neither boyfriends nor bank accounts – a “shock” to some of their adolescent charges – professing vows of chastity, poverty and obedience.

They personified goodness but portrayed a wicked sense of humor.

“At first, I didn’t know what to expect, but as I got to know them, I found they were kind, trustworthy, tough but fair and a lot of fun,” said junior Tarantino of San Rafael. “And when they say, ‘I’ll pray for you,’ it really means something!”

Women’s religious orders are in SERIOUS TROUBLE because they’ve adopted false spiritualities – “New Age” and other occult practices.

This is a problem all over America. One California diocese has a “Spiritual Renewal Center” staffed by two women religious. The modernist sisters invite people to “come into union with Earth-Wisdom.” Their brochure offers “Spirituality for the 21st Century,” including “cosmic awareness,” ecology, energy balancing, and emphasizes the importance of being “in touch with earth.”

Those who are looking for a “spring equinox celebration” can find it at the sisters’ retreat center – on the Feast of St. Joseph with no mention at all of this great saint! At this celebration, the group sits around a coffee table with everyone’s attention focused on an abalone shell and a bowl of earth.

There’s more. And it ain’t pretty!

Scandalous Catholic billionaire Melinda Gates under the influence of the notorious LCWR sisters.

During her TEDxChange talk, she spoke of the Ursuline (LCWR) nuns who taught at her Dallas Catholic high school, nuns who “made service and social justice a high priority.” Through her work with the foundation, Gates said, “I believe that I’m applying the lessons that I learned in high school.”

Within an hour of returning to her hotel, she received a message from some of those nuns. “It was fantastic,” she says, her eyes misting for a moment. “They said, ‘We’re all for you. We know this is a difficult issue to speak on, but we absolutely believe that you’re living under Catholic values.’ And it was just so heartening.”

Editor’s note: Open public scandal used to be treated as a very serious matter by the Catholic Church. This … is a real shame!

It is no coincidence that some of the Gay Liberation Front’s most zealous leaders are religious sisters and ex-sisters.

For example, lesbian activist Virginia “Ginny” Apuzzo, a former Sister of Charity, has founded numerous homosexual local and national organizations including the New York City and the Hudson Valley Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Community Centers and was Executive Director of the NY-based National Gay Task Force. She also served as Vice-Chair of the New York State AIDS Advisory Council, and was the highest-ranking gay or lesbian official to work in the White House.

The late Jean O’Leary, a former Sister of the Holy Humility of Mary, was an early spokesman for the male-dominated Gay Activist Alliance, which she left to form the Lesbian Feminist Liberation. She later co-chaired the National Gay Task Force and helped build the National Gay Rights Advocates and co-founded National Coming Out Day. Like Apuzzo, she played a major role in White House “gay” politics.

Unlike Apuzzo and O’Leary, Sister Jeannine Gramick worked from inside AmChurch to co-found the homosexual dream machine known as New Ways Ministry with her Salvatorian sidekick, Fr. Robert Nugent. [4] Together, they ushered in the golden age of the wholesale homosexual colonization of male and female religious orders in the United States which lasted from 1978 to 1998, and continues even today, albeit, on a smaller scale.

In 1972, the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND), Baltimore Province, over the objections of fellow sisters, released Gramick from her teaching assignment at the College of Notre Dame so that she might pursue a career in “gay” politics starting with the formation of Dignity/Washington, D.C., and Dignity/Baltimore. She later joined the (Marxist) Quixote Center which served as the staging base for the establishment of New Ways Ministry in 1978, and its many front organizations including the Catholic Coalition for Gay Civil Rights, the Center for Homophobia Education, Catholic Parents Network, Sisters in Gay Ministry Associated (SIGMA) and the Conference of Catholic Lesbians (CCL), the last two organizations directed at the recruitment and political networking of lesbian religious in Catholic active orders.

Media happily supporting idealized image of Catholic sisters that hasn’t existed for a generation

“This spin,” she said, “is omnipresent, always interesting, and often unintentionally comic. But however maliciously intended, I think it contains an element of nostalgia. It proves the irresistible attraction of goodness. Not even the liberal mainstream media can fail to see its beauty.”

Dressed in a flowing habit and devoting her life to educating children and building hospitals, or gliding serenely down spotless convent hallways and singing Gregorian chant in Latin: the classic image of the nun is less stereotype than it is archetype, a cultural icon of everything good and holy and true, and it is as much beloved by media as it is by Catholics.

Steichen told LSN that the only trouble with this picture is that the “good sisters” made in the image of this archetype are mostly an artifact of U.S. history and are now nearly extinct. LCWR represents about 80 percent of the 57,000 religious sisters in the U.S., with an average age of 74 and climbing. With the exception of a handful of young, deliberately faithful, countercultural, and largely recently-founded communities, the LCWR nuns and sisters have abandoned not only the habit that symbolized their devotion, but the faith that defined it, she said.

Archbishop Sartain is known as a “straight shooter”

Noting his extensive experience with religious communities in the four dioceses where he has served as a priest or bishop, the archbishop expressed his “personal appreciation for the role of religious women in the United States” and “all the extraordinary things that they’ve done.”

Editor’s note: When he headed up the Illinois Diocese of Joliet, Archbishop Sartain was known as a capable, fair minded executive, a thoroughly Catholic spiritual leader, and a good priest (not necessarily in that order).

This recent “dust-up” with women religious in the United States reminds me of the arguments my dad and my teenage sister used to have about how much and what kind of makeup she was wearing.

As I remember, they never really managed to agree, but they were able to (eventually) come to a mutually acceptable arrangement.

These sisters act as one “face” of the Catholic Church (and Jesus Christ) to the American public. They have a sacred duty to uphold the teachings of the Catholic Church, yet many of them have been failing miserably in that regard, for many, many years.

St. James rightly pointed out that faith without works is dead. The reverse is also true.

An allegedly Catholic sister who fails to uphold the authentic Catholic faith in her everyday work is giving scandalous false witness to her neighbor, while attempting to live the consecrated life in an undisciplined and seriously disordered way.

This particular initiative is long overdue!

My old Catholic elementary school has been struggling, and that’s not good for anybody. St. Germaine School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will merge with another Catholic school because of declining enrollment at both schools. St. Germaine’s enrollment dropped from 172 students just six years ago to 86 this year.

Sister Dale McDonald, Director of Public Policy and Education Research at the National Catholic Educational Association, told me that declining enrollment is a national trend. Though there is some growth in the South and the West, Catholic schools are shutting down at the rate of more than 100 per year.

Why? Catholic families are having fewer children. Costs have gone up — health care, teacher salaries, liability insurance — driving tuitions up. And Catholic families aren’t as attached to their parishes as families were when I was a kid.
