In modern society, woman “is presented either without sexual attributes or as a sex object,” the professor lamented. “How is it even possible to address a culture that treats the feminine body in this way?”

However, “John Paul II does not hesitate to rise to the challenge,” she wrote.

“When John Paul II links the visible bodily aspect of a woman with its power of perennial attraction ‘in strict accordance with motherhood,’ he may seem to be limiting the often wondrous visible beauty of woman to one dimension.”

Yet, “the mystery of femininity manifests and reveals itself in its full depth through motherhood,” Shivanandan said, quoting the late Pontiff.

“This mystery, as he explains in his Apostolic Letter Mulieris Dignitatem, involves ‘a special openness to the new person’ on the part of woman through which she discovers her own identity precisely as woman.”

In this gift of self through the openness of bringing new life into the world, a woman not only realizes her identity as female, but reaches the fullest expression of what feminine beauty is, explained Shivanandan.

“Beauty, feminine beauty, which, as John Paul II says, is in strict accordance with motherhood, is both a source and fruit of spousal love lived sacramentally in the family,” she noted. “From it radiates the beauty of the civilization of love.”

Pope John Paul II and Hugh Hefner?

Viewers of the “Nightline” segment on Christopher West may have been led to believe that the theologian considers Pope John Paul II and Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy Enterprises, to be on equal ground in their treatment of sexuality. But the piece, which condensed several hours of footage into a seven-minute video feature, may have missed the mark in presenting West’s comparison between the two.

West told Our Sunday Visitor his explanation of the connection he drew between Hefner and the pope was misrepresented.

“Both men began addressing the problem of Puritanism at the same historical moment — the early 1950s. As Catholics, we actually agree with Hefner’s diagnosis of the disease: a Puritanical rejection of the body and sex is utterly contrary to Catholic faith. But we radically disagree with his cure. John Paul II offered the world the real cure for the disease of Puritanism and its twin sister, sexual license.

“My strong disagreement with Hefner never showed up in the piece. Instead, they claimed Hefner is a ‘hero’ of mine. It’s been painful to see that some Catholics have accepted ABC’s spin at face value.”

Regarding his interview on Nightline, Christopher West says that his remarks were taken out of context. In some sense, this is surely true. However, the comments as aired are the latest in a long list of statements and actions not inconsistent with the context set by the Nightline editors.

Though occasioned by West’s Nightline appearance, the present statement addresses his theology as a whole.

Let me stress that I agree with those who vigorously defend West’s intention of fidelity to the Church. Certainly he has had positive results in drawing many Catholics into a deeper understanding of their faith. As for myself, I do not initiate anything about West in my classes, but only respond when asked a question. Then I begin by emphasizing West’s intention of orthodoxy. As I have often put it, “he would throw himself in front of a bus for the Church.” It is important to understand, however, that good will is not synonymous with sound thought; and I must say, not without reluctance, that West’s work seems to me to misrepresent in significant ways the thought of John Paul II.
