USCCB report: Girl Scout website contains strong references to contraception and other non-abstinence measures related to sexuality

Girl-Scouts-Logo

The bishops’ report focuses on three issues: 1) Girl Scouts USA’s relationship with groups like Planned Parenthood and international affiliate World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts ; 2) Girl Scouts’ views on issues related “to human sexuality, contraception, and abortion;” and 3) various materials and resources Girl Scouts USA has that may have “inappropriate content.”

With regards to Girl Scout affiliations, the report largely accepts Girl Scouts USA’s claim that they have no relationship with Planned Parenthood. However, it says that “attentiveness” is needed to prevent local groups — which act independently as their own 501c(3) organizations — from partnering with morally objectionable organizations, including Planned Parenthood.

USCCB 9 Days for Life begins today

9-days-headerNine Days Of Prayer, Penance And Pilgrimage
DAY ONE January 18, 2014

Intercession

For the mother who awakens each morning with the memory of abortion fresh in her mind: that the Lord may still the terror in her heart and lead her gently to the well-spring of his love and mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. May she, and all who’ve been involved in an abortion decision, find healing and hope through Project Rachel Ministry.

Prayer

Our Father, 3 Hail Marys, Glory Be

Reflection

Today’s Gospel reading from Mark recounts Jesus dining with tax collectors and sinners. When the Pharisees question Jesus about this, he responds, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” In a society where millions of people have fallen prey to the false promises of the culture of death, let us witness to the mercy of Jesus and invite all who’ve been harmed to experience his abundant love and healing.

Acts of Reparation (choose one)

  • Take time to write a handwritten note to someone who is lonely or needing encouragement.

  • Pray for your deceased relatives and those who have no one to pray for them.

  • “Spiritually adopt” a baby by saying this prayer every day: “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of [baby’s name], the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” (Prayer of Archbishop Fulton Sheen)

Nine Days Of Prayer, Penance And Pilgrimage

On January 22, 2014 our nation will remember the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Since that tragic decision, more than 55 million children’s lives have been lost to abortion, and the lives of millions of their parents have been shattered.

In prayerful recognition, “Nine Days of Prayer, Penance and Pilgrimage” will take place January 18-26, 2014.

Question for top Catholic Church clerics: Why the obsession with all things “pastoral”?

pastoral

by Doug Lawrence

From the sound of things, a person might get the impression that no one in the Catholic Church, prior to 1965, knew anything at all about the proper care and guidance of souls. Of course, that is totally wrong!

The real issue is how the Catholic Church should continue to conduct itself, going forward – whether the church should be IN the world but not OF the world: “If you had been of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.”
(John 15:19)

Or whether the Church should “knuckle under” to the influences of the world, the flesh and the devil: “Having an appearance indeed of godliness but denying the power thereof…” (2 Timothy 3:5)

The Definition of PASTORAL – from the Merriam Webster On-line Dictionary:

: of or relating to the spiritual care or guidance of people
who are members of a religious group

: of or relating to the pastor of a church

Being “pastoral” is not rocket science. The Catholic Church has been blessed with many generations of great pastors. Being pastoral is nothing new. So what are these “obsessively pastoral” modernist clerics trying to say?

In a recent interview, the new head of the USCCB, Archbishop  Joseph Kurtz made the following comments:

Francis’ “primary word is mercy,” said the archbishop, and this emphasis on mercy comes from a deep awareness of his own shortcomings and imperfections. His humility is also the fruit of this awareness, and Archbishop Kurtz identified the pope’s genuine humility as being key to his widespread popularity: “It’s holy and it’s very beautiful. But it’s also very engaging … He seems to remind people of Jesus.”

Throughout our conversation, Archbishop Kurtz kept returning to one particular facet of Pope Francis’ message that appears to have resonated deeply within him: the importance of “accompanying the person.” Pope Francis does not call us to ignore sin entirely…

Isn’t that special!

Fox News writer who compared Pope Francis to Barack Obama fired from his gig at Catholic News Service

Tony Spence, editor in chief of the wire service, which operates under the aegis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said he had been “very pleased” with Shaw’s work, which included an analysis of the comics book industry. Spence said he knew that Shaw worked for Fox but it never caused a conflict — until this week. Spence wrote in an email:

“(W)hen he penned the recent piece on Pope Francis, comparing him to President Obama, and presenting it as an op/ed, he seriously compromised his credibility as an objective Catholic journalist for CNS. Had Adam merely reported on the pope’s apostolic exhortation, even citing unflattering sources, there would have been no problem. However, Adam’s caustic condemnation of the exhortation and of Francis himself, one of the key figures we cover daily with objectivity, fairness and certainly charity, left me little choice but to end his service with us.”

Editor’s note: Today’s hopelessly “beige” Catholic News Service is vaguely reminiscent of the Soviet newspaper “Pravda” back in the Cold War days, where support for Soviet ideology and the party line was routinely substituted for truth, objectivity, fairness and charity.

CNS’s Tony Spence is a paid “spinmeister” for those who run the Catholic Church. Objective, fair and charitable, he and CNS is not! Spence – under orders from his bosses at the USCCB – is promoting Pope Francis – right or wrong – just like the main stream media has always shamelessly promoted Barack Obama.

Truth has nothing to do with it.

Once again, the Catholic Church promotes religious liberty for everyone EXCEPT conservative Catholics!

The national collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is coming up this weekend, and though the CCHD has taken steps to clean up its act, organizations promoting abortion, birth control and homosexuality continue to receive CCHD funds.

Editor’s note: Remember to “PASS” on the annual CCHD (Catholic Campaign for Human Development) 2nd collection coming up this Sunday – unless you like empowering leftist community organizer types, who regularly promote a myriad of anti-Catholic social programs, using Catholic donations.

There’s plenty of better charitable causes to support. Unfortunately, not many of them are Catholic, any more!

The new (Catholic) McCarthyism: “Are you now, or have you ever been, a critic of Pope Francis?”

Archbishop Charles Chaput of the Philadelphia Archdiocese has been unfairly depicted as a critic of Pope Francis.  This stems from an interview he had with John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter.

Special Message from the Bishops of the United States: The disastrous “Seamless Garment Approach” is back – plus one more thing.

usccblogo

The bishops of this country have just concluded their traditional fall meeting in Baltimore and have spent time on issues important to them and their people: help to those suffering from Typhoon Haiyan; an update on the situation in Haiti; matters of worship and teaching; service to the poor; and comprehensive immigration reform. Among those priorities is the protection of religious freedom, especially as threatened by the HHS mandate.

Pope Francis has reminded us that “In the context of society, there is only one thing which the Church quite clearly demands: the freedom to proclaim the Gospel in its entirety, even when it runs counter to the world, even when it goes against the tide.”

We stand together as pastors charged with proclaiming the Gospel in its entirety. That Gospel calls us to feed the poor, heal the sick, and educate the young, and in so doing witness to our faith in its fullness. Our great ministries of service and our clergy, religious sisters and brothers, and lay faithful, especially those involved in Church apostolates, strive to answer this call every day, and the Constitution and the law protect our freedom to do so.

Madagascar prelate retracts earlier negative comments about Catholic Relief Services

keeprightwrong

On July 25, the Population Research Institute (PRI), a pro-life organization founded by Father Paul Marx and led by Steven Mosher, alleged that CRS, the US bishops’ international relief and development agency, “is using funding from American Catholics to distribute contraceptive and abortifacient drugs and devices in concert with some of the world’s biggest population control/family planning organizations.”

After Catholic Relief Services responded that “this allegation is simply false,” PRI stated on July 31 that its charges “reflect the views of the bishops and clergy of Madagascar” and offered quotes from several priests, as well as the bishops of the nation’s two largest cities.

According to PRI, Archbishop Tsarahazana said:

Even in my own diocese! Without my knowledge … they [CRS] were working on an artificial contraception project here … And, then, the Catholic people around here heard about it and said: “What’s that all about? That’s supposed to be ‘Catholic’??” So, there you have it: They [CRS] were following the instructions of USAID [the US Agency for International Development] …

I’m not sure why, and I don’t want to exaggerate, but maybe 70% of its staff, or even more – is not Catholic; they’re not Catholic … I do understand that about CRS’s commitments to the US Government … but, the question that remains is: Why are there so few Catholics on CRS’s staff … that I don’t understand so well …

Just this year CRS held a very big meeting here in town – a “capacity-building” meeting or something, at a hotel here – and I heard about it only accidentally, when I was up in the [town] of Diego, and somebody told me about the meeting to be held [in my own town]. I was embarrassed; I didn’t know anything about it.

On August 2, the USCCB issued the following statement:

Archbishop Désiré Tsarahazana, of the Archdiocese of Toamasina and the president of the episcopal conference of Madagascar, expresses strong support for Catholic Relief Services and confirms that Catholic Relief Services does not provide or facilitate access to contraceptive or abortifacient drugs or devices in his archdiocese.

ObamaCare implementation delayed. Again

Doctor-Obama-300x276

When the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) passed it was touted as one of the most significant pieces of legislation in American history. This was going to make health care affordable to every living person in this country. It was of such monumental importance that left-wing Catholics assured us all that it was worth throwing over the unborn in order to continue supporting President Obama. This was the stuff that was gonna help stop the oceans from rising and help create a new Heaven and a new Earth.

Why hasn’t Cardinal Dolan fired CCHD Director Ralph McCloud for his scandalous role in the Wendy Davis/Texas abortion bill affair?

One must ask how it is possible that McCloud deserves any position in the USCCB, least of all a position as director of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development where he is supposed to be a leader in social justice. The  mission statement of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is this: “The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is an instrument of the Catholic Church working to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ, … to bring good news to the poor   … release to captives    … sight to the blind, and let the oppressed go free.’ (Luke 4:18)” It may be a newsflash at the CCHD, but killing the innocent unborn is not part of the mission of Jesus Christ!

Is there not any other Catholic in the United States whose organizational and management skills meet or exceed that of Ralph McCloud? Is there not another Catholic in America whose personal political actions do not contradict the moral teachings of the Catholic Church? In short, is there not another Catholic in this country who would not be an ethical embarrassment and scandal to the Catholic Church and its members? (Answers: Yes. Yes. Yes.)

It is important to stress again that McCloud’s very public and effective support of the abortion supporting Wendy Davis occurred while he was an employee on the payroll of the Catholic bishops in a job that required him to promote justice and dignity for all human life! Put another way, while his fellow Catholics were praying and working and giving their hard earned money to their bishops to promote justice, including wiping out abortion, Ralph McCloud was out and about supporting an abortion mongering politician. And it is not that the Catholic bishops did not or do not know about McCloud’s public support of Davis. They did at the time and they do now, but do not seem to care.

So if you might wonder why Senator Wendy Davis, the courageous champion of the killing of unborn children at any time in the womb for any reason, even has a seat in the Texas senate where she has a position to  effectively promote the culture of death, think of Ralph McCloud and the Catholic bishops of the United States who employ him as director of their Catholic Campaign for Human Development

As my late mother would say: Doesn’t that beat all you’ve ever heard?

Head of CCHD was the campaign treasurer for the woman who filibustered the Texas legislature to stop anti-abortion legislation

cchd

While the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has come under well deserved scrutiny for supporting groups such as ACORN and groups with ties to promoting abortion, CMR has uncovered that Ralph McCloud, while heading the CCHD in 2008, was simultaneously working as a highly placed campaign official for a pro-choice politician seeking to unseat a pro-life politician.

As you likely know, CCHD is the bishops’ anti-poverty program which funds community organizing and economic development projects and has been at the center of a number of controversies. Ralph McCloud was named head of the CCHD in November 2007. In his first year as head of the CCHD, according to public records, McCloud also worked as the Treasurer for Planned Parenthood endorsed Democrat Wendy Davis.

Why would the director of the CCHD, during his tenure as head of an ostensibly Catholic institution act as champion and treasurer of a campaign for a pro-abortion politician seeking to oust a pro-life politician? This is the textbook definition of scandal.

Evidently, diversity and inclusion goes right out the window when the money stops – if you’re a left-wing, progressive (pro-abort, pro-homosexual, pro-big government, Socialist-Democrat) Catholic.

This piece never fails to indict conservative Catholics for their faithfulness – and it never fails to praise those who have shamelessly and often fraudulently been using Catholic money for anti-Catholic purposes, over the last 40 years.

A number of Catholic bishops have allegedly endorsed this report. That should come as no surprise.

How Can One Tell When It’s CCHD Collection Time?

One answer to that question is “when the CCHD and their supporters start their preemptive screeds against faithful Catholics concerned about their left-wing leanings“.
For example, David Gibson of Religion News Service starts his piece by claiming that “conservative activists are threatening the social mission of the Catholic Church… by attacking the Church’s flagship anti-poverty program with 21st-century style Catholic McCarthyism.”
Of course he refers to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.  Obviously Mr. Gibson is unaware that the CCHD, by policy, gives no money to organizations that directly perform the Corporal Works of Mercy.  Perhaps Mr. Gibson knows that and he doesn’t give a hoot.  At any rate, CCHD has traditionally given grants – collected from Catholics during the in-pew collections – to organizations that seek to “change social structures and policies”.  That quote is taken from one of their flyers.
More often than not, these organizations are socialist in nature, along the lines of Saul Alinsky.
Indeed, the CCHD was originated by Msgr Jack Egan, an associate (and disciple) of Saul Alinsky for the express purpose of syphoning Catholic resources to fund these community-organizing endeavors (Barack Obama cut his political teeth while working with the Gamaliel Foundation, one such group).  But this blog’s previous posts have delved in detail into CCHD’s sordid past – no need to rehash that here.

Just days before Pentecost Sunday, Cardinal Dolan finally “wises up”. Hires professional spokesperson.

Cardinal Dolan, president of the USCCB, says he needs an “attractive, articulate, intelligent” woman as his personal spokesperson, claiming that “the days of fat, balding Irish bishops are over.”  He has chosen Kim Daniels, a long-time effective advocate of conservative causes,  and ex-personal domestic policy czar to Sarah Palin.

Reform CCHD and ALL say things are as scandalous as ever. The USCCB (Catholic bishops) say no!

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 2, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In an internal memo sent to diocesan Catholic Campaign for Human Development directors, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has claimed that the “near totality” of a critical report about its grantees is “based on false suppositions” and “tenuous connections.”

At the same time, the U.S. Bishops domestic anti-poverty agency has amended its website to accuse the report’s researchers – namely those with the pro-life group American Life League – of having a “consistent track record of misreporting.” The pro-life group has responded that CCHD has offered no evidence of the misreporting.
The CCHD 2011-2012 Grants Report issued by the Reform CCHD Now Coalition (RCN), of which American Life League is a member, lays out evidence indicating that 38% of CCHD’s grant recipients are in violation of the organization’s own grantee guidelines.

Your participation is requested: USCCB Call To Prayer For Life, Marriage, And Religious Liberty.

usccblogo

Join the Movement

  • What: The U.S. bishops have approved a pastoral strategy to advance a Movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty. It is essentially a call to prayer, penance, and sacrifice for the sake of renewing a culture of life, marriage, and religious liberty in our country.
  • Why: The well-being of society requires that life, marriage, and religious liberty are promoted and protected. Serious threats to each of these goods, however, have raised unprecedented challenges to the Church and to the nation. Two immediate flashpoints are the following:First is the HHS Mandate, which requires almost all employers, including Catholic employers, to pay for employees’ contraception, sterilization, and abortifacient drugs regardless of conscientious objections. This is a clear affront to America’s first freedom, religious liberty, as well as to the inherent dignity of every human person.Second, current trends in both government and culture are moving toward redefining marriage as the union of any two persons, ignoring marriage’s fundamental meaning and purpose as the universal institution that unites a man and a woman with each other and with the children born from their union. These challenges call for increased awareness and formation, as well as spiritual stamina and fortitude among the faithful, so that we may all be effective and joyful witnesses of faith, hope and charity.
  • When: In this Year of Faith, starting on the feast of the Holy Family (Dec. 30, 2012) until the feast of Christ the King (Nov. 24, 2013)
  • Who: All of the Catholic faithful are encouraged to participate
  • Where: Throughout the entire country; at your local parish, cathedral, school or home
