Why do Catholics hold the pope in such high esteem?

Q: Why do Catholics hold the pope in such high esteem?

A: Popes ought to be rightly esteemed, with some noteable exceptions.

The present day Pope Benedict XVI is an excellent pope, a good priest, a great catechist, scholar, and defender of the faith.

All popes occupy the holy office that was personally established by Jesus Christ, while he still walked the earth, and all popes have the power of the keys, as well as the awesome power of binding and loosing, on earth and in heaven.

Popes are also priests … which counts for a lot … especially with God.

In short, the papacy is a unique, holy office. Not because any man says it is, but because Jesus Christ, who is God, says it is.

And that is more than good enough for me.
